Yahoo29-04-2025

KONA, Hawaii (KHON2) — The search continues for 42-year-old Jared Willeford of Kona, who was last seen launching his kayak from Keahou Bay around 8 a.m. on April 27.
Willeford's family members told Hawaii County Fire Department crews that his truck and trailer were still located at the boat ramp.

'His kayak was discovered floating off Keauhou Bay approximately around 9:30 a.m.,' explained Jeff Silva, a local fisherman who has been assisting in the search. 'Some OC1 paddlers paddled up to his kayak, and everybody knows Jared because he frequents the area.'
Officials said the kayak was spotted about 400 yards from shore.
Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center watchstanders received the report at 10:09 a.m. from Hawaii County Fire Department dispatchers.
Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and coordinated the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to aid in the search.'Originally, the U.S. Coast Guard was informed he was wearing orange bibs, but we have since found the orange bibs on the yellow kayak,' explained USCG Petty Officer 3rd class public affairs specialist Jennifer Nilson.
Silva and others joined the search Sunday morning and were able to find Willeford's dry bag drifting towards shore. He said divers searched the area for hours and conditions were ideal on Sunday.
'For something like this to happen, for how close he went missing, how close to shore his kayak was, it's just all very odd,' Silva added. 'I was blown away we couldn't find him [Sunday]. It was a beautiful day, so many people were in that area it's just doesn't make sense how someone can go missing.'
Willeford is considered an expert kayak fisherman and waterman, and even survived a great white shark attack four years ago.

He is the second fisherman to go missing this month off Hawaii island.
'It's crazy, the community is pretty broken,' Silva said. 'These are local boys that grew up here, Oa Hind and Jared Willeford are beyond fisherman these guys are watermen, and they do this for a living. At the end of the day you want to get the families some type of answer.'
As of April 28, the Coast Guard said it will have searched 20 hours and over 2,000 nautical miles and can search during the night hours.

Silva says the community will keep searching too.
'They're not giving up, they're not giving up hope, and it just takes hope to bring these guys home so we're gonna keep going with that,' he said.
The U.S. Coast Guard sector Honolulu, USCG Air Station Barbers Point, USCG Oliver Berry, and the Hawaii County Fire Department continue searching. The DLNR is the lead agency involved in the search.
Anyone with information that may assist in search efforts should contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM channel 16 or call the Sector Honolulu command center at (808) 842-2600.

'On our side, we're trying to… create better zones for sidewalks and for vehicles to be able to see ahead, behind,' Salim said. 'We're trying to improve our intersections, we're working with our state partners at the Department of Transportation, but… the main thing right now is we've got to slow down.' Residents want sustained enforcement on Diamond Head homeless

DIAMOND HEAD, Hawaii (KHON2) — The issue of homelessness around Diamond Head continues to frustrate neighbors and beachgoers, even after a major sweep in April. Over 100 cleared from Diamond Head during homeless sweep KHON2 checked it out and found some troubling signs that the problem has not gone away. Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park looks like any other scenic spot on Oʻahu at first glance, but this corner of paradise was also home to a large and messy homeless encampment until June 5. 'And I've been writing letters and and sending in photos and I mean, I think people from all over the world come here. They shouldn't have to see that,' said Ann, a Diamond Head beachgoer. Ann and others who visit the beach said they have been pleading for help for weeks, but it was not until KHON2 reached out to HPD and the Department of Land and Natural Resources on Thursday that action was taken — the encampment was cleared out on Friday. Neither agency would say who made it happen — HPD told KHON2 that it was DLNR responsibility and DLNR said to ask HPD. There is concern that someone cooking dinner could provide the spark that lights up the whole mountainside with the summer heat drying out the slopes. Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news City officials said at Mayor Rick Blangiardi's Town Hall meeting on Thursday that they were aware of the risks, especially from campfires and open flames. A joint sweep with the State removed most of the homeless living around Diamond Head in April. 'There were as many reported 120, 140 people on the Hill. There's 12 there now, seven on top, five below. We're going to zero. We're going to zero because of the fire safety issues that are posed there,' said Department of Community Services director Anton Krucky. Diamond Head Beach is still troubled even though some areas are mostly cleared. Folks are still living in the cliffs and along the shoreline — neighbors said it simply is not safe. 'It's a very dangerous place for anybody really, alone. Male or female, there's a lot of people on drugs here. You can tell. And, there's no police presence here,' said Arleen Velasco, Diamond Head Neighborhood Board vice chair. Velasco said the solution is not just clearing tents, it is sustained enforcement. 'If people knew there was a police presence and they were going to get tickets and fines. I think they'd go somewhere else,' said Velasco. 'You know, I used to come to Diamond Head all the time, for many years, and walk the beach, but now I go somewhere else because I don't like to walk past it. It's. It's a safety issue for me,' Ann said.
