Belgian govt distances itself from staffer who ‘put up anti-Netanyahu posters' near embassy in Delhi
AWEX is the public service in Belgium's Wallonia region. It is in charge of attracting foreign investment to the region and also helps companies currently operating in the region to export their products.
'Since this matter primarily concerns the Wallonia Export & Investment Agency (AWEX), for whom the person concerned works, we refer to them for more information,' a Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said to ThePrint.
New Delhi: The Belgian government Thursday distanced itself from a staffer at its embassy here who was allegedly involved in putting up posters against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in relation to the conflict in Gaza, in the Chanakyapuri area.
On Tuesday, the Delhi Police said an AWEX staff member at the embassy was allegedly behind putting up 'wanted' posters of Netanyahu in the high-security diplomatic area. The incident is said to have occurred last week, with at least two posters seen on electricity poles, according to reports.
The incident was being investigated by the relevant local authorities. According to reports, an individual wearing a blue shirt and black trousers was allegedly spotted putting up the posters in the early hours of Tuesday morning. From CCTV recordings, Delhi Police identified the individual and confirmed his employment at the Belgian mission.
A person familiar with the matter said that the issue has not been officially raised with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) yet. The ministry can only take action after it has been officially informed of a case.
The embassy in New Delhi has representatives from two regions in Belgium—Flanders and Wallonia. The country has three regions in all, the third being Brussels, the capital.
Wallonia is the French-speaking region located in the southern part of the European nation. In 2015, India was the thirteenth largest export destination for goods manufactured in the region.
Flanders, the Dutch-speaking northern region of Belgium, also has an Investment and Trade Commissioner appointed to the embassy in New Delhi.
Over the years, India has become an important partner for engagement in trade for Belgium. In March this year, Princess Astrid, the younger sister of the current monarch, King Philippe, led a high-level economic delegation to India for a week. She met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and they agreed to cooperate across emerging and high-impact sectors and to 'deepen' the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
The Belgian delegation also met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav.
Brussels condemned Israel's conduct in the current conflict in Gaza and has pushed for the resumption of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territory. In April, Belgium's permanent representative to the United Nations Sophie De Smedt declared that Israel must not weaponise aid during the conflict.
More than 50,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel began its 18-month operation following Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack that left more than 1,000 Israelis dead. At least 250 individuals were also taken hostage. Since then, while Hamas has released dozens of hostages as part of deals between the two sides, others have been retrieved by Israeli forces. According to reports, 56 hostages still remain in Gaza.
A fresh ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel, potentially including hostage exchanges, is currently under discussion.

Delhi: 30-year-old arrested for over ₹30 crore import/export fraud
A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly orchestrating a ₹30.47 crore fraud by submitting forged remittance documents to avail export incentives under the Foreign Trade Policy, the Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) said on Saturday. The accused, Angad Pal Singh also known as Angad Singh Chandhok, was deported from the United States and arrested on June 2, said deputy commissioner of police (EOW) Vikram Porwal. Singh conspired with a private bank employees to forge more than 460 Foreign Inward Remittance Certificates (FIRCs), which were used to fraudulently claim duty credit scrips — government-issued incentives meant for exporters, said police. 'Singh and his father Surinder Singh and brother Harsahib Singh managed five export firms that used these forged FIRCs to illegally secure trade benefits from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT),' said DCP Porwal. The firms — Kumar Trading Company, National Trader, Trident Overseas India, HSC Exim India, and AHC Auto Spares — allegedly did not receive any legitimate export payments. Police said that the case, registered in 2017 following a complaint from a private bank, involves a complex web of document forgery and financial manipulation. According to investigators, between 2013 and 2015, the private bank's Naraina branch received 467 fraudulent FIRCs purportedly issued by a second private bank's Bhikaji Cama Place branch. These FIRCs falsely claimed foreign remittances for exports that never occurred, police said. According to police, based on these documents, the first private bank issued Bank Realisation Certificates (BRCs), which the accused firms used to obtain Duty Credit Scrips from DGFT. The scrips, which are tradable, allow importers to offset customs duties. 'This fraud was not just limited to paper forgery. The accused opened accounts at the first private bank and processed fake export documentation with alleged assistance from within the bank,' Porwal said, adding that the proceeds from the sale of these scrips were never backed by real exports. Singh, a class 12 pass-out from Delhi, reportedly learned the ropes of the export-import business from his father, an auto parts trader. He later roped in his friends and relatives to set up additional shell firms under the promise of high returns, police said. Three co-accused have already been arrested and charge-sheeted in the case, police added. Singh was sent to judicial custody and is also linked to another fraud case under investigation by EOW. Police said further inquiries are underway to identify the full scale of the alleged conspiracy and potential involvement of bank officials.

Hamas officials say at least 6 killed by Israeli military near Gaza aid site: Report
At least six Palestinians were killed and several others were injured in a gunfire allegedly led by Israeli military in the latest deadly incident near an aid distribution centre in southern Gaza, Civil Defence agency which is run by Hamas militant group said. According to a spokesperson of the Civil Defence agency, people had gathered to collect aid supplies near the aid distribution centre when the sudden shooting started on Saturday morning. Reports which quoted eyewitnesses stated that the Israeli military opened fire as soon as the people started advancing towards the aid site, BBC reported. The Israeli military, in its defence, has said that it fired several warning shots at the suspects who approached them in a threatening manner. Since the aid distribution started in the southern Gaza region, dozens of Palestinians have been killed and hundreds have been injured in the past week. Nattapong Pinta was a hardworking and beloved man who worked in agriculture in Kibbutz Nir Oz. He was held hostage for 610 days by terrorists in Gaza. On October 7, 2023, he was abducted with some of his friends. His family, wife and son are waiting for his return. He was… — Israel Defense Forces (@IDF) June 7, 2025 The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), the aid distribution agency backed by the United States and Israel, has said that it has paused its distribution to deal with overcrowding and enhance the safety infrastructure. But people are gathering near a roundabout on a daily basis on the edge of the Israeli military zone through which they have to pass to reach the aid site. According to a statement released by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the Gazans have been told that the area is an active combat zone during nighttime hours. Meanwhile, GHF has said that it wasn't able to distribute aid on Saturday due to direct threat from Hamas, which the militant group has denied. The United Nations has not shown its support towards GHF and said that it doesn't provide enough food and medicine to deal with Gaza's humanitarian crisis, rather putting Palestinians in danger. In a special operation by Israeli forces in the Rafah area of southern Gaza on Friday, the military recovered the body of a Thai national named Nattapong Pinta.

Thousands of demonstrators march through Rome, calling for immediate end to war in Gaza
Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched through the streets of Rome on Saturday (June 7, 2025) against the war in Gaza in a protest called by Italy's main opposition parties, who accuse the right-wing government of being too silent. Protesters held a banner reading 'Stop the massacre, stop complicity!' at the start of the march, which moved peacefully through the center of Rome amid a massive display of rainbow, Palestinian and political party flags. The protest attracted a diverse crowd from across the country, including many families with children. According to organisers, up to 300,000 people participated in the rally organized by the leftist opposition to ask the government for a clear position on the conflict in Gaza. Also Read | Netanyahu says Israel has 'activated' some Palestinian clans opposed to Hamas 'This is an an enormous popular response to say enough to the massacre of Palestinians and the crimes of (Israeli leader Benjamin) Netanyahu's government,' the leader of Italy's center-left Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, told reporters at the march. 'There is another Italy that doesn't remain silent as the Meloni government does,' she said, referring to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Ms Meloni was recently pushed by the opposition to publicly condemn Mr Netanyahu's offensive in Gaza, but many observers considered her criticism too timid. Also Read | Recognising Palestinian state now would send 'wrong signal': Germany '(The Italian government) is not reacting despite an abnormal massacre, despite an absolutely cruel and inappropriate reaction. The (Italian) government remains silent,' said Nadin Unali, a Tunisian demonstrator at the march. Earlier this week, the Italian premier urged Israel to immediately halt its military campaign in Gaza, saying its attacks had grown disproportionately and should be brought to an end to protect civilians. Israel faces mounting international criticism for its offensive and pressure to let aid into Gaza during a humanitarian crisis. Gaza has been under an Israeli blockade for nearly three months, with experts warning that many of its 2 million residents are at high risk of famine. The war broke out on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 hostages. They are still holding 56 hostages, around a third of them believed to be alive. Since then, Israel has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians in its military campaign, primarily women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its figures.
