I will lead through collaboration, says new IOC President Coventry
BERLIN: Kirsty Coventry, the newly elected president of the International Olympic Committee, emphasised collaboration with stakeholders as a key priority for her tenure, in remarks made today ahead of her official takeover next week.
Coventry, a former Olympic swimming champion from Zimbabwe and Africa's most decorated Olympian, was elected to the post in March, succeeding Thomas Bach. She will formally assume the role following Monday's handover ceremony in Lausanne.
"I like to collaborate, to be able to listen, hear everyone's opinions. I think it is very important," Coventry said during an online media roundtable.
"I also know I am the president and need to take decisions and that we need to move."
Coventry, 41, is the first woman and the first African to lead the IOC. Her approach is expected to differ from her predecessor's, as Bach was known for the rapid speed and volume of his decision-making and concentration of power.
Bach's presidency was marked by wide-ranging reforms, including overhauling the Olympic bidding process, introducing new sports and reducing costs for host cities.
He also navigated challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and led to a spectator-free Beijing 2022 Winter Games.
Coventry said the IOC would hold a two-day workshop for its members, starting on June 24, the day after the handover ceremony, as part of ongoing discussions with stakeholders on key issues.
"It was not about title or power," she said when asked about her decision to run for president. "Sometimes those things get in the way and make you focus on the wrong things."
Reflecting on her appointment, Coventry acknowledged the significance of her role as the first woman to lead the IOC.
"It is not something I have thought about a lot in terms of impact it can have," she said. "In the past days now, I have a much greater understanding of that importance."
The IOC generates annual revenues of several billion dollars and Coventry noted the "responsibility" that comes with leading the organisation.

Soon Huat-Shevon fired up by RTG power
KUALA LUMPUR: Mixed doubles Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai are looking forward to the Road to Gold (RTG) programme to keep their 2028 Olympics dreams alive. The world No. 5 couple were also part of the inaugural RTG programme which began in April 2023, and they came close to qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Soon Huat-Shevon, who value the top-up services provided by the Youth and Sports Ministry under the Olympic programme, have vowed to justify their inclusion for the second time. "We signed the commitment agreement to join the RTG programme, and we are honoured to be part of this national project," Shevon posted on her Instagram. "We appreciate the support from RTG to help us elevate our performance and we promise to give our best in the upcoming competitions." Under the RTG programme, Soon Huat-Shevon will receive sport science services, competition exposure, coaching, a monthly allowance, and accommodation near training and competition venues.

Mirabel retains TSM Golf Challenge crown
KUALA LUMPUR: Mirabel Ting reinforced her status as Malaysia's top amateur golfer by becoming the first player in over a decade to successfully defend the girls' title at the TSM Golf Challenge—matching a feat last accomplished by Kelly Tan in 2012. The 20-year-old Sarawakian, currently world No. 2 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), carded rounds of 70, 68 and 71 for a winning total of 209 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) as the 14th edition of the prestigious junior event concluded on Thursday. It was another dominant display by Mirabel, who finished a whopping 12 strokes ahead of nearest challenger Wang Xin Yao (221). A three-way tie for third followed, with Nur Batrisya Balqis Abdul Ghani, Foong Zi Yu, and Nik Alicia Miriam Kamil all ending at 222. Former LPGA star and two-time Olympian Kelly had won three consecutive titles from 2010 to 2012. With Mirabel still eligible to compete next year, she could take aim at replicating that feat.
