Activist Mugilan acquitted of sedition charges in 2017 case
KARUR: Environment activist R S Mugilan, who has staged several protests including against the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi and the nuclear power plant at Kudankulam, was acquitted of sedition charges by the chief judicial magistrate court on Friday.
The case relates to a speech Mugilan made in April 2017 at a public meeting in Seethapatti Colony in Aravakurichi. In December 2017, a case was booked and Mugilan was arrested under Sections 124(A), 153(A)(1), and 505(1)(b) of IPC. He was granted bail in September 2018.
During the final hearing on Friday, the judge found no evidence against Mugilan and acquitted him of all charges. Speaking to reporters, Mugilan said, 'I was charged falsely for speaking about illegal sand mining in the Cauvery river, and the importance of caste and religious harmony. I am glad justice has been served.'
Mugilan has faced several cases. In 2019, he was arrested based on a sexual assault complaint lodged by a 32-year-old woman in Karur. He was granted bail by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court in November 2019.

Madras HC seeks report from top cop on pending IPC cases
CHENNAI: Questioning the discrepancies in the number of criminal cases pending at different stages as per the information furnished to the jurisdictional court and the statistics available with the police, the Madras High Court on Monday directed the Greater Chennai Police (GCP) Commissioner A Arun, who was present in the court as per an earlier order, to file a report on the pending cases registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) till June, 2024. Justice P Velmurugan issued the direction while hearing a petition filed by V Vanamamalai, a resident of an apartment in Nolambur, seeking a direction to the police to register a case on alleged caste discrimination and abuse by a member of the flat owners' association. The judge flagged the frequent showdown between the police investigation officers (IOs) and the judicial officers. 'One of the reasons is that you are not submitting closure reports in the courts if any case is closed,' he said, adding it is mandatory to report to the court forthwith if any FIR is registered or closed. Final reports are also not properly submitted in the courts, he noted. The judge directed the commissioner to file a report on the cases under the IPC till the BNSS came into force, pendency at the stage of FIR, charge sheet or not having been taken on file of the judicial magistrate courts. He gave time till July 8 for filing the report.

Guntur: Police arrested senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao at his residence at Journalist Colony in Hyderabad n Monday for his alleged derogatory remarks against the women of Amaravati region during a Telugu TV channel debate. Based on the complaints lodged by local women, Thullur police registered the cases against Kommineni Srinivasa Rao and journalist VVR Krishnam Raju. Police officials team is shifting Kommineni from Hyderabad city to Thullur police station for further action. They will produce him in the court in Guntur district. The police also went to VVR Krishnam Raju's residence in Vijayawada city, but they fund the house locked. Police booked cases under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities)Act and other relevant sections of the IPC against them. AP Madiga Corporation director Khambampati Sirisha also lodged a complaint against the two journalists. Several Amaravati-based women, farmers and members of various JACs, condemned the alleged remarks made by Kommineni Srinivasa Rao and VVR Krishnam Raju against the women of Amaravati region. Deputy Speaker in the State Legislative Assembly Raghurama Krishnam Raju complained to the Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta on the derogatory remarks made by Kommineni Srinivasa Rao and VVR Krishnam Raju and demanded action against them. Cases have been booked at 52 police stations against them across the State, it is learnt.

Madras HC asks cops to decide on nod for Muruga meet by Thursday
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday directed the Madurai police to decide by June 12 on Hindu Munnani's application seeking permission to hold a spiritual conference titled 'Muruga Bakthargalin Aanmeega Maanadu' on June 22. Justice B Pugalendhi also permitted the organisation to install miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Muruga at the event venue – Amma Thidal – near Vandiyur toll plaza but restrained it from performing pujas until a final decision is made. The case has been posted for further hearing on June 13. The court passed the order on a petition filed by Hindu Munnani state secretary S Muthukumar, challenging the police's denial of permission to set up the miniatures. In his affidavit, Muthukumar stated that the intention was to provide devotees an opportunity to witness all six abodes of Lord Muruga in one place. He added that pujas and distribution of prasadam were planned from June 10 to June 22, along with narration of the sthalapuranam and special features of each shrine. On the day of the conference, a collective prayer with the chanting of Kandha Shasti Kavasam and Thiruppugal would be held, he noted.
