World Championship: Denmark Shocks, Eliminates Canada In Final Minutes Of Quarterfinal Matchup
Team Canada went into elimination play at the IIHF Men's World Championship feeling pretty good about themselves, as they clinched the top seed because of their tournament-best 6-0-1 performance in preliminary round play.
But their first-round opponent was ready for the challenge, and they shocked the hockey world.

On Thursday, Team Denmark pulled off the upset of the tournament, eliminating Team Canada in the final few minutes of regulation to take home a 2-1 win and advance to the semifinal round. Canada led, 1-0, within the final three minutes of the game and surrendered the game-winning goal with just 48 seconds left on the clock.
Denmark will face Team Switzerland in the semifinal round.
Sidney Crosby notched an assist in the loss, and goaltender Jordan Binnington stopped 31 of Denmark's 33 shots on goal.
No scoring happened until the third period despite Canada pushing heavily in the first two. After outshooting Denmark 18-4 in the first period and having two power play opportunities - without anything to show for it - the Canadians received three consecutive power plays during the middle frame but could not come through.

Then, a little more than five minutes into the third period, Canada finally broke through. Crosby did some work down low before feeding the puck to Travis Konecny, who was in the hashmarks in the left circle. Konecny gave it back to Crosby at the bottom of the left circle, who found Travis Sanheim in the low slot area.
Canada held onto that 1-0 until Winnipeg Jets pending-unrestricted free agent star Nikolaj Ehlers - with 2:17 left in regulation - tied the score at 1-1 with a shot through traffic from the left point.
Then, with those 48 seconds left on the clock, Nick Olesen put the dagger in the beast that is Canada, as he was wide open at the net front and took a feed from Nicklas Jensen. Olesen deked out Binnington, forehand to backand, and sent the hometown crowd into a frenzy.
The loss marked former Penguins' goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury's final time suiting up for a professional hockey game, as he backed up Binnington in net. It also marked Crosby's first career loss in the quarterfinal round of international play, as his previous low was fourth place in the 2006 World Championship.

According to Puck Empire, Denmark is the only country to have a .500 or better record against Crosby in international play.

Blackhawks hire Vellucci as an assistant coach under Blashill
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Mike Vellucci as an assistant coach for Jeff Blashill's first staff with his new team. The Blackhawks announced the addition of Vellucci on Monday. He joins Michael Peca and Anders Sorensen as Blashill's assistants. Goaltending coach Jimmy Waite, video coach Matt Meacham and assistant video coach Adam Gill round out the staff. Vellucci, 58, spent the previous five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was an assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes from 2014-19. Vellucci also was an assistant coach for the U.S. when it won the world championship last month. Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar and defenseman Alex Vlasic were part of the winning American team. 'Serving as an assistant coach at the world championship this summer and winning a gold medal for our country alongside Frank Nazar and Alex Vlasic will bring such valuable experience to this group,' Blashill said in a release. 'That kind of championship-caliber background only makes our team better and I'm excited to get to work.' Blashill, 51, took over as Chicago's head coach last month. Prince Rupert joins active community challenge for chance to win $100K
Prince Rupert is participating in the '2025 Community Better Challenge,' a national initiative encouraging Canadians to try new activities and get moving throughout June. In collaboration with several local organizations, the City's Recreation and Community Services Department is offering a wide range of free events and activities all month to help residents stay active and potentially win the competition. 'To help rally and win the grand prize this year, we need as many people as possible to participate! Residents, organizations and the City can log active hours throughout the month to potentially win up to $100,000 toward local facilities and programming,' said the City in a recent press release. The ParticipAction challenge is part of a national competition to crown Canada's most active community, and Prince Rupert is going all in. The local lineup of free programming includes activities for all ages and fitness levels, from high-energy sports to relaxing, creative sessions. Among the offerings are carpet bowling, tai chi, rugby and lacrosse sessions, junior golf, volleyball, trail walks, cricket, floor hockey, and chair yoga. Popular activities such as Zumba, pickleball, swimming, art, knitting and crochet meetups, and more will also take place.
