Hong Kong's Kai Tak Sports Park area needs stronger business ecosystem: lawmakers
Hong Kong lawmakers have called for more efforts to boost the business ecosystem around Kai Tak Sports Park to encourage retail and restaurant spending in the area, with the Rugby Sevens set to move to the venue next month.

Perry Yiu Pak-leung, a legislator representing the tourism sector, also said on Saturday that most hotel bookings for the event, which runs from March 28 to 30, were for locations on Hong Kong Island.
He added that visitors were more used to that side of the city, even as the event moved from Hong Kong Stadium in Causeway Bay to the new venue in Kai Tak.
Yiu also noted that 80 per cent of tickets had been snapped up for the Hong Kong Sevens, but argued more efforts were needed to ensure spectators would benefit other businesses in the area.
'Kai Tak Sports Park itself has a lot of related complementary [promotions], and during the matches, there will also be a lot of outdoor activities,' he said, expecting the activities to bring more people to nearby Kowloon City and San Po Kong.

'It will take time for observation and integration of the whole economic ecosystem around Kai Tak Sports Park to happen.'
Yiu stressed that there should be no repeat of fans being asked to leave mid-match, which occurred during the World Grand Prix snooker tournament, especially since the Sevens was a high-profile event with a long history in Hong Kong.

Ex-England Sevens star Simon Amor returning to Hong Kong to take up performance role
Former England Sevens star Simon Amor is returning for a second stint with Hong Kong, after being appointed as the new executive director of performance and representative rugby. The 46-year-old briefly took charge of the senior men's side in June 2021 as interim head coach ahead of the Covid-delayed Asia Rugby Championship, leaving six months later to become technical director of Japan's Sevens programme. Amor, who worked as the attack coach for the England XV's side when Eddie Jones was in charge, joins with Hong Kong preparing for the most important six weeks in the team's history. A place at the men's 2027 World Cup awaits the winners of this year's championship, and Amor is expected to be at Hong Kong's first game, away to the United Arab Emirates on June 14. Amor's remit will also include guiding the women's bid to qualify for the XVs World Cup, and helping both sevens squads try to reach an Olympic Games. 'I am delighted to be returning to Hong Kong China Rugby at an incredibly exciting time in the organisation's proud history,' Amor said in a statement released by HKCR.

Photo: RTHK Participants at a fencing competition, that is also a test event for the 15th National Games, gave high praise to the Kai Tak Arena where the tournament is being staged. The two-day Challenge Cups Fencing Championships that kicked off on Saturday features over 500 athletes in the men's and women's épée, foil and sabre competitions. A 16-year-old participant, surnamed Leung, said the Kai Tak Arena is much bigger than the usual venues where fencing competitions are staged. "I think the biggest difference is the atmosphere," she said. "For example, just now spectators were yelling the names of athletes to support them. When we hear that, it will allow us to relax, and we can know that friends are here to support us." She added the lights are also brighter, which allows competitors to see more clearly. A man surnamed Chung and his family were among those watching the event. He told RTHK he was there to support his friend. Chung said all facilities are very new and clean, and the lighting performance that was arranged at the venue provided spectators with an enriching experience. The épée competition was concluded on the same day, while the foil and sabre tournaments will be staged on Sunday.
