Videos of Assassination Attempt in Colombia Stoke National Tension
It was all captured on video.
An assassination attempt against a Colombian senator and presidential hopeful on Saturday night has horrified much of the nation, and not just because it represents the highest-profile political violence in the country in years.
The attempt against Miguel Uribe Turbay, 39, a conservative politician and the grandson of a former president, took place at a campaign event in the capital, Bogotá, while a small army of cellphone cameras rolled. Videos that spread rapidly online and were verified by The New York Times show the suspect listening to Mr. Uribe deliver a campaign speech, then shooting him from behind, running away, and finally being pinned to the ground as Mr. Uribe bleeds profusely nearby, held up by his crying colleagues.
A white car smeared with his blood, pictured in numerous videos and photos, has quickly become a symbol of the attack. And the videos, taken together, have come to reflect some Colombians' fears that the nation is headed back to the violence that shaped it from the 1980s to the early 2000s, when attacks linked to drug traffickers and left-wing guerrillas were regular occurrences in major cities.
'We lived through a terrifying time,' said Sonia Ballen, 61, who on Sunday marched many blocks with other supporters of Mr. Uribe to the hospital where he was being treated. 'And here we are starting to see it again.'
On Sunday morning, the medical director at the hospital, the Santa Fe Foundation in Bogotá, said that Mr. Uribe's condition was 'extremely serious.' The director, Dr. Adolfo Llinás Volpe, said the hospital would not release information about the senator's prognosis.

The crimes which happen most often on your doorstep on Midlands streets
Tens of thousands of crimes were recorded in the West Midlands last year, ranging from the most serious to more minor incidents. But away from the murders, rapes and robberies, lower-level offending which happens in communities can also have a major impact on people's lives. This can include things like antisocial behaviour (ASB), burglaries and vehicle crime. READ MORE: Drivers making themselves 'invisible' to speed cameras and 'they're everywhere' Get our local newsletters like Black Country News, MySolihull and MySuttonColdfield straight to your inbox We have analysed latest crime data to see the offences which happen most often in West Midlands neighbourhoods - with the full list at the bottom of this article. Residents can also see how many of these crimes occurred in the space of a year - and whether they live in a high-crime area. There is a common theme when looking at the data, which covered the 12 months to March. By far the most common crime is 'violence and sexual offences', which is all placed into one category by West Midlands Police. Numbers are high because of the wide range of offences this covers - it takes in domestic abuse, fights outside pubs, sexual assaults and much more. This is the most common type of offence in every policing area of the West Midlands, except one, Shirley, where shoplifting is highest. Shoplifting is also a very common crime on our streets, reflecting just how big an issue this currently is. Antisocial behaviour (ASB), a frequent blight on communities, also appears in the top three across many areas. Other offences which make regular appearances include vehicle crime; and criminal damage and arson. In Birmingham, Lozells and East Handsworth has the highest crime rate in terms of violent and sexual offences. The list also includes Black Country policing areas. These tends to be larger than those in Birmingham and for this reason may have higher figures, so should not be directly compared to Birmingham neighbourhoods. Waymos lit on fire, KTLA van defaced as Los Angeles protests spin out of control
What started as peaceful protesting took a disastrous turn in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday when demonstrators poured onto the 101 Freeway, leading to violent clashes with law enforcement, injuries, arrests, vandalism, fires and more. Amongst the ongoing chaos, at least one KTLA van was seen being tagged with graffiti live on air. With dark plumes of smoke still filling the air above downtown as of 6 p.m., at least five Waymos were seen either still engulfed by flames or charring after being set ablaze by protesters on North Los Angeles Street near Arcadia Street. The destruction led the Los Angeles Police Department to indefinitely close Los Angeles Street north of Arcadia and south of Alameda streets and declare an unlawful assembly for the entire area, ordering crowds to disperse. 'Our partners with LAFD are attempting to enter the area to extinguish the fire,' LAPD's Central Division said in an X post. 'This is a historic area of DTLA, Olvera St.' The department soon added that demonstrators were using chairs and garbage bins, among other items, to block the street. 'To our media partners, demonstrators and others who may enter the area,' LAPD noted, 'Burning lithium-ion batteries release toxic gases, including hydrogen fluoride, posing risks to responders and those nearby.' In addition, the cost of the Waymo destruction could be extremely high. According to a 2024 report by the Wall Street Journal, analysts estimated Waymo's driverless cars cost between $150,000 and $200,000 a piece. With the five burning robotaxis, the cost of damages would amount to roughly between $750,000 to $1 million, based on WSJ's estimate. 'We are in touch with law enforcement,' A Waymo spokesperson said in a statement. 'A number of our Waymo vehicles are in the vicinity of active protests taking place in Downtown Los Angeles. We have no reason to believe that these protests are related to Waymo.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The conspicuous silence of Trump and Musk's foreign allies

Divorces are often difficult for those caught up in the middle, so spare a thought for Argentine President Javier Milei. The libertarian leader threw in his lot with President Donald Trump, casting himself as a MAGA fellow traveler. He carried out numerous visits to the United States on missions tailored specifically to ingratiate himself to the American president. But he also served as a direct source of inspiration for tech billionaire Elon Musk, who took up Milei's radical revamping of Argentina's economy and gutting of its federal government as a model for what his U.S. DOGE Service should achieve. Milei even gifted Musk a chainsaw, the visceral icon of what he sees himself wielding in Buenos Aires.
