Veterinarians make disturbing discovery after analyzing elephant's cause of death: 'This is so sad'
An elephant died in Tamil Nadu, India, after scavenging at a trash heap.
Veterinarians who tried to save the animal found plastic bags and aluminum foil in its intestines during a necropsy, the Hindu reported. The trash included single-use bags and polythene snack packaging.
The elephant, which was 12-15 months pregnant and accompanied by a calf, was seen near Bharathiar University in Coimbatore. After it collapsed, a Forest Department team tried to save it, providing hydrotherapy, fluids, and other treatment for three days.
Officials attributed the creature's death to multi-organ failure caused by septicemia. They noted its heart and liver were unhealthy.
"This is so sad," one X user said.
"Heartbreaking," someone else wrote. "Ban single-use plastic bags. Bring in strict fines for those who break the rules. We also need to run strong public campaigns on how plastic harms animals, marine life, spoils beaches, and affects our health."

India is the latest country to report a surge in new Covid cases, as the latest variant NB.1.8.1 spreads across the globe. Cases have now been reported in Asian countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and China, while the UKHSA recorded the first 13 cases in England last week. However, the true numbers are unlikely to be known, given the significant decrease in the number of people testing compared to the figures seen during the global pandemic five years ago. NB.1.8.1 stemmed from the Omicron variant and was first detected in January this year. It has quickly spread across China and Hong Kong, and has now been recorded in several states across the United States and Australia. By late April, NB.1.8.1 comprised about 10.7 per cent of submitted sequences globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This rose from just 2.5 per cent one month before. The WHO declared the NB.1.8.1 strain a 'variant under monitoring' on 23 May, which means scientists believe it could potentially affect the behaviour of the virus. Lara Herrero, a virologist from Griffith University in Australia, suspects that NB.1.8.1 spreads more easily than other variants. 'Using lab-based models, researchers found NB.1.8.1 had the strongest binding affinity to the human ACE2 receptor of several variants tested, suggesting it may infect cells more efficiently than earlier strains,' Dr Herrero wrote last month in The Conversation. Dr Chun Tang, GP at Pall Mall Medical, added: 'NB.1.8.1 isn't too different from the Omicron variant, but it does have some tweaks to its spike protein, which might make it spread a bit more easily or slip past some of our existing immunity. 'That said, early signs suggest it doesn't seem to cause more serious illness, but of course, we're still learning more about it.' 'Its spread has been identified in around 22 countries,' said Dr Naveed Asif, GP at The London General Practice. 'The WHO assesses the additional risk to the global public as currently low, and existing Covid-19 vaccines are considered effective in preventing severe disease.' However, Nimbus does appear to be more transmissible than previous variants, with notable increases reported in India, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand, notes Dr Asif. Common symptoms of the NB.1.8.1 variant include a severe sore throat. fatigue, mild cough, fever, muscle aches and congestion. It has also been reported that some patients have experienced gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhoea. Healthcare experts have stressed, however, that there is no evidence that the new strain is more deadly or serious than previous variants, and that current Covid vaccines are expected to remain effective and protect anyone infected from severe illness.

Although in some areas, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives may be declining in healthcare, birth equity remains a priority for many hospitals in California, including Miller Children's & Women's Hospital in Long Beach. Raising awareness and developing strategies for birth equity is crucial to addressing racial and social disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes. In the United States, Black and Hispanic mothers are significantly more likely to experience complications during childbirth and have higher mortality rates as compared to other groups. At Miller Children's & Women's Hospital in Long Beach, over 5,500 babies are born each year. Our community is diverse, with many of our mothers coming from Black, Hispanic, Pacific Islander and other non-white backgrounds. According to the United States Census Bureau, approximately 43.4% of Long Beach's population identifies as Hispanic or Latino, 11.9% as Black or African American and 12.8% as Asian. The city also has a significant Cambodian community, which is the second-largest outside of Cambodia. As a community hospital serving the greater Long Beach area, we prioritize training and awareness around unconscious bias among our patients and caregivers. We have the necessary tools to effectively record and analyze data. Statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women is 49.5 deaths per 100,000 live births – significantly higher than for White (19), Hispanic (16.9) and Asian (13.2) women in 2022. These disparities highlight the urgent need for focused interventions and systemic changes in maternal healthcare. Several factors contribute to the higher maternal mortality in minority communities. Structural racism and implicit bias within the healthcare system can lead to inadequate prenatal care, delayed diagnosis and treatment of pregnancy-related complications, and disparities in access to maternal healthcare services. Furthermore, socioeconomic factors further exacerbate these disparities in maternal outcomes among minority women. Addressing the crisis requires removing systemic barriers to quality maternal healthcare. Miller Children's & Women's Hospital recognizes the ongoing work needed in minority health and has made it a priority. No one should be denied basic or standard healthcare due to their race or ethnicity. Therefore, we are committed to becoming the change, recognizing that much work lies ahead. At the Cherese Mari Laulhere BirthCare Center at Miller Children's & Women's, our healthcare providers and care teams undergo cultural competency training to better understand the unique needs and experiences of minority patients. Additionally, we have partnered with the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative as one of five hospitals selected for their significant demographics of racial and ethnic minority populations. This partnership focuses on addressing birth inequities, educating staff, sharing data and creating a Hospital Action Guide to empower hospitals nationwide to engage in this vital work. Since focusing on these initiatives, we have seen an almost 10% increase in Black mothers reporting that they always feel like they are treated with courtesy and respect. These patient-reported measures enhance the relationship between the patients and care providers to ensure that patients' voices are heard and that their birth experience preferences are honored. Evidence indicates that these improvements will help close the disparity gap in birth outcomes for Black women and their newborns. Currently, Miller Children's & Women's is working to implement all recommendations from the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses' (AWHONN) respectful maternal care framework and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.
