There were two new wildland fires confirmed in the Northeast Region by the evening of May 29, one of which is not under control.
Cochrane 4 is a 1.5-hectare wildland fire located about five kilometres east of Pichogen River Provincial Park. The status of this fire is not under control, Ontario Forest Fires said in its daily update.

Parts of Ontario are being affected by forest fire smoke drifting across the province from northwestern Ontario and the Prairie Provinces.

However, Chapleau 7, a 1.1-hectare wildland fire located north-northeast of Desbarats Lake, is no longer burning, the update said.
That means there are three active wildland fires in the northeast region: one is not under control, one is being held and one is being observed.
'The fire hazard is moderate to high across most of the northern half of the northeast region,' the update said.
'Areas south of West Nipissing and French River are under a low fire hazard. For a closer look at fire hazard conditions in your area, see our interactive map.'
Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services remind the public to use caution when performing any outdoor burning.
'In order to dispose of yard waste and woody debris, we encourage you to use methods such as composting or using your local landfill,' the release said.
'If you must burn, follow Ontario's Outdoor Burning Regulations.'
Fires are to be ignited no sooner than two hours before sunset and are to be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise. Always have tools and water adequate to contain the fire at the site.
To report a wildland fire located north of the French and Mattawa rivers, dial 310-FIRE. To report a wildland fire located south of the French or Mattawa Rivers, dial 911.

While the fire situation is stable in the northeast, the province has implemented a restricted fire zone for portions of northwestern Ontario.
Details of the areas affected can be found here.

Ottawa residents sending less waste to the landfill following launch of 3-item garbage limit

Ottawa residents are sending less garbage to the city's landfill since the launch of the new three-item garbage limit. Last September, the city implemented a new limit on household waste being placed at the curb as part of a plan to extend the life of the Trail Road Landfill. Under the new garbage limits, households are limited to a maximum of three items of garbage every two weeks, with yellow bags required for any items over the three-item limit. Statistics provided to CTV News Ottawa show 41,506 tonnes of garbage was sent to Ottawa's landfill in the first five months of 2025, down from 51,279 tonnes of garbage during the January to May period in 2024. Residents sent 51,504 tonnes of waste to the landfill in the January to May period of 2023. 'The decrease may be attributed to several factors, including the implementation of the three-item garbage limit, enhanced recycling efforts, changes in waste management policies, weather-related emergencies, and shifts in consumer behaviour,' Andrea Gray Farley, program manager of program planning at Public Works, said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa. May saw the largest decrease in the amount of waste being sent to the landfill, with 9,393 tonnes of waste thrown out in May compared to 12,222 tonnes in 2024. A total of 26,277 tonnes of garbage was sent to the city's landfill in October, November and December, down from 31,180 tonnes during the same three months of 2023. Extending the life of the Trail Road Landfill The three-item garbage limit is one of several steps the City of Ottawa is taking to reduce the amount of waste heading to the landfill and extend the life of the Trail Road Landfill. As of July 1, the city's landfill will no longer be accepting industrial, commercial and institutional waste. All industrial, commercial and institutional waste (IC&I) will be accepted at private landfills. 'IC&I waste is bulky and hard to compact which takes up airspace much quicker than residential waste,' Shelley McDonald, director of Solid Waste Services, said in a memo to council last month. 'Staff calculated that banning IC&I waste could extend the life of Trail by approximately one year. The City is uniquely positioned to preserve Trail's capacity through the ban of IC&I waste, given the number of private sector landfills and transfer stations located within the city's boundaries and within 100 km of its boundaries that are open to accepting IC&I waste.' The ban on waste at Trail Road Landfill applies to all commercial vehicles, vehicles larger than a half-ton pickup, trailers with more than one axle, any vehicle or trailer with a dumping mechanism or any vehicle with business markings.

Showers linger Thursday

Thursday is off to a rainy start, with a cold front moving in and the possibility of thunderstorms. Thursday is off to a rainy start, with a cold front moving in and the possibility of thunderstorms. By afternoon, some breaks of sunshine will start peeking through. 'We could still see some thunderstorms in through eastern Elgin County up until about a noon hour and southern Oxford County,' said CTV London Meteorologist Julie Atchison. Temperatures are cooler in the afternoon, especially along the shoreline of Lake Huron. 'If you're right along that lake, that cool northerly wind will keep those lake shore temperatures on the chillier side,' said Atchison. London, Kitchener and Mount Forest will see temperatures around 20 to 23 degrees. Friday brings warmer weather of 25 degrees, with a mix of sun and cloud. Here's a look at the rest of the forecast Thursday: A few showers ending near noon then cloudy with 40 per cent chance of showers. Risk of a thunderstorm in the morning and afternoon. Hazy late in the afternoon. Amount 10 to 15 mm. High 20. UV index 6 or high. Thursday night: Partly cloudy. Hazy. Low 10. Friday: A mix of sun and cloud. High 25. Saturday: A mix of sun and cloud. High 24. Sunday: A mix of sun and cloud. High 25. Monday: Cloudy with 60 per cent chance of showers. High 22. Tuesday: A mix of sun and cloud with 30 per cent chance of showers. High 21.

One year later: Calgary marks anniversary of Bearspaw South Feeder Main break

On June 5, 2024, the Bearspaw South Feeder Main in Calgary burst, leading to water restrictions for all residents. A year later, officials say the investigation into what happened is still ongoing. (File) Thursday marks one year since the catastrophic rupture of Calgary's Bearspaw South Feeder Main - an event that sparked a citywide state of emergency, weeks of water restrictions and a long-term rethinking of Calgary's water infrastructure. The six-and-a-half-foot concrete pipe, located under 16 Avenue N.W., burst suddenly on June 5, 2024. Water gushed across the road, flooding nearby sports fields and prompting an immediate emergency response. It was just the beginning of what city officials have described as one of the most significant infrastructure failures in recent memory. In the months following, the City of Calgary carried out 29 separate repairs along the feeder main, with the final repairs completed by November 2024. The system has since stabilized and is operating within acceptable structural limits, according to city engineers. An investigation into the failure found several contributing factors: microcracking in the pipe's protective mortar layer, allowing soil to reach and corrode the prestress wires; corrosion and embrittlement of those wires, exacerbated by chloride penetration; and aggressive soil conditions with high chloride levels, made worse by road salting. While the internal review by APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta) is complete, an additional independent review by a panel of industry professionals is still pending. 'There has been a review done by APEGA that verified we met all engineering standards and that our response was to the standard they expected,' said Mayor Jyoti Gondek. 'We have an independent review that is still to come that is a panel of professionals in industry, so we continue to investigate what happened there. We have also invested a greater budget into the monitoring the maintenance and the technology that is required to make sure our water system is in good shape.' City hall is now focused on preventing similar situations from happening in the future. A major initiative currently in the planning stages is the twinning of the concrete portion of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main. 'Creating those backup plans or that redundancy is something that administration has taken very seriously,' noted Gondek. 'We are putting in more feeder mains to ensure that we can meet the needs of Calgarians and the people that are moving here. We are looking at twinning to make sure that redundancy exists, and we rely on administration to come to us with timely information.' The city said the twinning project may use micro tunneling technology to minimize surface disruption. Construction could begin by the end of 2025, but the design and budget for the project have yet to be finalized.
