Daily Record3 hours ago

A job opportunity "making history" at a Scottish island spaceport has come up. The successful applicant will have accommodation and all meals provided for them.
At the moment, SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland is seeking a Steward. SaxaVord is situated on the Lamba Ness peninsula on Unst, which is the most northern of the inhabited Shetland Islands and, therefore, the most northerly island in the UK.
SaxaVord Spaceport is the first fully licensed vertical launch Spaceport in Europe, and according to its website is "developing our infrastructure and critical services for orbital test flights". The site is designed for small rockets delivering payloads into low earth orbit.
The full-time role will pay a salary of £12.50 per hour. It will involve a rotational schedule of three weeks on and three weeks off.
As well has having accommodation and food provided, benefits of the job include free travel and transport to and from the spaceport and Aberdeen, an "excellent work-life balance", and a staff gym. There is also a staff pub, where regular events such as staff quizzes are held.
The role will involve providing top-quality customer service across the hospitality function at the accommodation facility at SaxaVord Spaceport.
The steward will be responsible for ensuring all areas are clean and well-maintained, and offering an "outstanding" experience for staff, clients, and visitors.
Among the main responsibilities of the role will be carrying out a variety of housekeeping tasks and duties, assisting with the serving of breakfasts and dinners, and responding to customer inquiries. The steward will also be expected to report safety hazards or potential issues to site management and maintain a friendly attitude when interacting with both guests and the team.
Those applying for the position should have experience in a similar housekeeping position, strong team and interpersonal skills, and a keen eye for detail. Although full training will be provided, a strong knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards is also beneficial.
Other desirable attributes include experience in a bar or serving alcohol and a history of working in a dynamic environment with changing priorities. Meanwhile, applicants should possess the flexibility and adaptability required to work in a rotational and remote environment.
The Glassdoor job listing states: "This is a superb opportunity to be part of the UK's leading, and only operational Spaceport, where you will be part of the team who are making history every day!
"SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Rotational General Steward."
Other than the SaxaVord Spaceport, Unst is comprised mainly of grassland and coastal cliffs. The island is renowned for its unspoilt views, amazing wildlife, and fascinating history.
The main settlement on Unst is the village of Baltasound, which is situated along the island's eastern coast. The village features a post office, a convenience store and bakery, and a nearby hotel with a restaurant.
The job listing adds: "Shetland offers stunning landscapes, vibrant local culture, and a close-knit community. The Spaceport, located on the island of Unst, is at the forefront of space innovation and technology in the UK."

Murray hails ‘brilliant opportunities' of UK Government's industrial strategy

The 160-page document put Scotland 'at the heart of the UK's energy transition', as well as talking up commitments to a £750 million supercomputer in Edinburgh and £200 million in development funding for the Acorn carbon capture and storage facility in Aberdeenshire. The Prime Minister also announced a cut to electricity bills for industrial businesses, £30 million for the video games sector – with a number of high profile developers based in Scotland – and £30 million for research and development for each of the devolved nations. Delighted to be in Cockenzie, East Lothian for the launch of the UK Industrial Strategy today. Lots of brilliant opportunities for Scotland from the 8 growth sectors. Jobs, investment, regeneration and skills. — Ian Murray MP (@IanMurrayMP) June 23, 2025 In a post on X following a visit to the promote the strategy, the Scottish Secretary said: 'Delighted to be in Cockenzie, East Lothian, for the launch of the UK industrial strategy today. 'Lots of brilliant opportunities for Scotland from the eight growth sectors. 'Jobs, investment, regeneration and skills.' The strategy was also praised by Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar. 'Labour's industrial strategy delivers for Scotland – unlocking economic potential, raising wages, boosting living standards, and delivering the growth we need,' he said. Asked about his response to the UK Government's announcement on Monday, First Minister John Swinney touted his own Government's work on industry. 'Of course, we have in Scotland our own approach to industrial strategy, which involves working with our universities, with our economic development agencies to ensure that we attract investment and can support development within the economy,' he told the PA news agency. 'Last week, we saw that Scotland, for the 10th year in a row, was the most successful part of the United Kingdom for the attraction of inward investment other than London and the south east. 'So that's an indication that the Scottish Government's got its priorities correct, its focus correct on the attraction of investment, because we're contributing to make Scotland an incredibly successful investment location.'
