The Squinty Tree, infamous in the Craigshill community, or at least it will be now!
The premiere of the short animation about the Squinty Tree took place last month in the Big Living Room at Almond HQ and was attended by local councillors, Almond contractors and staff, as well as pupils from Letham Primary School.

The tree, which is thought to be a Hawthorn, sits on Almond land, just below the new community orchard at Hobart Street in Livingston. It is a one off and has grown and flourished despite everything that has happened to it.

To celebrate its uniqueness Almond engaged with local Scottish storyteller Colin Williamson to produce a narrative about the tree.
Sally Thompson, Comms Officer for Almond Housing and the animation originator, said: 'I envisaged a giant tree, standing proud on a hill, when in fact it is rather unassuming and possibly unseen by many who walk by.
'But the tale was amazing and the way that Colin told it was captivating.'
Colin doesn't write his stories down, he tells them in the traditional way, like his grandfather taught him.
Consequently, there was nothing to publish in the conventional sense of the word, which is why Sally considered the use of animation to bring the tale to life and allow it to hopefully live on for many years to come.
With drawings from Perthshire based artist Katie Bourne, combined with production skills from Sabine Klaus-Carter at Creation Editor, the animation took shape, but no one got to see it before the premiere.

Jane Deary, Community Engagement Officer at Almond who organised the premiere, said: 'We wanted to create a bit of a buzz and make an occasion of the first screening, so no one else was allowed to see the film in advance (not even Colin) and I think it worked!
'We had a great turnout, and the response was really positive. It is a film about the community, made for the community and was supported by the community.'
Following the screening, the school children took part in an art activity which was supported by Spark and involved them creating wooden signs for the community orchard.

Whilst they did this other audience members had a tour of the local area in the sunshine, visiting the Squinty Tree, the community orchard, the Craigshill community garden and the recently renovated Victoria Street planters.
John Davidson, CEO of Almond Housing, added: 'I wasn't entirely sure what to expect but I thought the film was superb, beautifully presented.
'Colin is inspiring and I think the animation captured this. It was great to invite so many people to our office and have such support for this project.

'Thanks to all those who took the time out of the day to join this premiere event!'
The Squinty Tree animation can be found on YouTube.

There was a 30-year age gap between the two men, with many not taking Paul's win seriously as a result. However, the influencer saw red when he was taken to task over Tyson's age by Morgan. "He walked away with tens of millions of dollars to support his family for the rest of their lives, and we've made the biggest fight in history. So, 128 million people would disagree with you, that it wasn't something amazing.' But Morgan refused to give up as he declared: 'The problem is the only proper boxer you fought was Tommy Fury, and he beat you. He's not even the best in his family.' An inflamed Paul said: 'I mean, you can sit there and make up s**t, but you actually don't know your facts. The broadcaster said: 'Cheers Jake, really enjoyed that, and good luck to Julio - knock him out for all of us will you?'

Jake Paul STORMS OUT of Piers Morgan interview as heated chat turns ugly

The 'Problem Child' returns to the ring on Saturday night - but was left rather enraged following a heated discussion with Piers Morgan Jake Paul furiously STORMED OFF an interview with Piers Morgan just days before his return to action following a heated verbal exchange. The 'Problem Child' is scheduled to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in a cruiserweight clash in Anaheim on Saturday night. The 28-year-old has not fought since beating former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson last November. Despite being expected to knock the boxing veteran out, the 'Problem Child' cruised to a victory on points. ‌ With Paul in the final stages of preparations for the contest, the YouTuber-turned-boxer lost his cool and stormed off of an interview with Morgan following a furious exchange about the boxer's upcoming fight and his boxing credentials. During the chat - which airs tonight on YouTube from 10pm UK time - the pair also came to blows about Paul's controversial fight with Tyson. ‌ Donning a Mexican sombrero - seemingly getting into the spirit ahead of his fight with Chavez Jr - the American became more agitated before eventually storming off. 'I'm not talking about Mike Tyson…I'm trying to fight the best people, and that's why Chavez is here on Saturday. "I want Canelo. I want Anthony Joshua. I want all these people. It's been five years in this sport,' said Paul after Morgan responded that while Paul was a brilliant businessman, he was still fighting a 58-year-old man. Morgan quickly cut in, replying: 'But the problem is the only proper boxer you fought was Tommy Fury, and he beat you. He's not even the best in his family.' Paul blasted back: 'I mean, you can sit there and make up s***, but you actually don't know your facts. I fought multiple boxers with professional records, and including Mike Tyson himself, who I think is going to be a harder fight than Chavez.' The social media sensation stunningly claimed he would have toppled a prime Tyson - which Morgan quickly rubbished. A furious Paul replied: 'You don't actually know that! You can't sit there and say that... I think anything is possible. That's why self belief is the most powerful thing in the world.' He added: 'You don't think I can be a Mike Tyson? I don't think you go to the gym!' ‌ Morgan said: 'I think you're a great YouTuber, a great influencer. I admire what you try to do boxing, but I do think when you actually come up against a proper, serious boxer, and I suspect that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, maybe that person you, it could all come crashing down.' Paul brutally spat back: 'I think the problem here Piers, is that you think that your opinion matters?' Asked why he was doing his show if the host's opinion did not matter, Paul taunted: 'Oh, I'm just taking your audience to sell pay per views. I don't give a f**k about your show, dumb a**. This is a f****** business enterprise. Buy the pay per view on Saturday, June 28, me versus Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Thank you, tune in everybody!' ‌ The 28-year-old then hung up the call, leaving a bemused Piers smiling and saying: 'Cheers Jake, really enjoyed that, and good luck to Julio - knock him out for all of us will you?' Before it all kicked off, Paul had confidently stated that he will get the job done with ease on Saturday night. 'He's a dumb a**, and so it's going to be apparent on Saturday when he's the one that gets knocked out… I'm being so honest, man, this guy is easy work.' Chavez Jr has been fairly inactive in the ring over the last few years. The former middleweight champion ended a three year hiatus in his last outing, defeating ex-UFC star Uriah Hall. With a professional record of 54-6-1-1, Chavez Jr has already fought the likes of Andy Lee, Canelo Alvarez and Daniel Jacobs.

Polite but persistent: Brian Taylor on the art of political interviews

'Think of the people watching, the people voting,' Mr Taylor tells me as I chat to him ahead of The Herald heading to The Fringe this year. With a career in the media spanning over 40 years - much of that time spent as political editor for the BBC - it's more than fair to say that The Herald columnist knows a thing or two about conducting a good interview. And he will be doing just that when The Herald's Unspun Live at the Fringe heads to Summerhall's Dissection Room in over a month's time. First Minister John Swinney will be in the hot seat as Brian Taylor interviews him on August 5. This is certainly not Mr Taylor's first rodeo when it comes to interviewing Mr Swinney. Brian Taylor on the art of a good political interview (Image: Colin Mearns) He has followed the First Minister's career in the SNP from the get-go. From when he was national secretary of the party to his first spell as SNP leader, then to backbench MSP to taking on ministerial roles, and being once again thrusted into the top job of the party and becoming the 'unexpected First Minister', as Mr Taylor puts it. READ MORE: Mr Swinney has often been branded as the 'safe pair of hands' politician. The man who has steadied the ship as the party faced choppy waters under his predecessors. 'Has that always been the case?', I ask the seasoned broadcaster. 'He is a remarkable figure within the SNP because he brings stability, he certainly has endeavoured to do so in the past year, but he is a passionate, fervent nationalist as well. 'He is a passionate, fervent advocate for independence which some perhaps miss when they see that he pursues a tactical and strategic role.' 'He is the unexpected First Minister. If anything we thought his ministerial career was over. 'And then a crisis within the SNP and therefore within the Scottish Government arose and the cry was, 'Send for John'. 'He thought about it and, boy, did he have to think about it.' Mr Swinney has opened up about the personal conflict he felt when considering taking the country's top job. Being there for his wife who has multiple sclerosis and his teenage son, weighing at the forefront of his mind. Brian Taylor and Hannah Brown (Image: Colin Mearns) During his interview with the First Minister in August, Mr Taylor wants to get past 'the sound and fury' in Scottish politics. He wants to find out their 'real' offering to voters ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections in May 2026. Mr Taylor said: 'I've never experienced in more than forty years as a journalist a period of tension and disquiet in the body politic and in people as there is now. "I called it repeatedly in my Herald column the age of anxiety, and I'm quite certain that is the case." Some questions Mr Taylor is keen to pose to Mr Swinney include: What does he think about challenges confronting him ahead of the Holyrood elections, what does he think about his rivals for the post of First Minister and what does he think about his predecessors? With so much to cover and only 45 minutes of the First Minister's time, how does Mr Taylor get the best out of a prominent political figure like Mr Swinney? 'What I'm trying to do with any political interview,' Mr Taylor said, 'It is to think not of my objectives, think not of what the First Minister brings to the table, think of the people watching, the people voting. What would they want to ask if they were in my position? 'You ask the questions on behalf of the public that they want answers to, legitimately want answers to. Not the froth, not the frippery, not the nonsense but the genuine answers that the folk on the doorsteps want answers to but you ask them from a position of analytical knowledge." The broadcasting and political expert said 'analytical knowledge' could cover a range of things such as comparing previous statements made by ministers to current ones as well as insight into issues such as the independence strategy or health statistics. But how you frame questions to interviewees is key. 'You say it persistently but you say it politely," he tells me, 'The people should be watching the interview and saying, 'That's it. That's the question I want answers to.' Unspun Live at the Fringe will also include Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar who will face questions from The Herald's editor Catherine Salmond on August 6. We will also hear from deputy first minister Kate Forbes on August 7 and polling expert Sir John Curtice alongside "special guests" on August 4. At every event, there will also be ample time for Q & A with the audience. 'It's quite an exceptional line-up for what promises to be an exceptional series of events,' Mr Taylor said, 'The Edinburgh festivals generally are a core part of Scotland's existence and The Herald is also a core institution in Scotland so it's a natural match between the two.' For those on the fence about buying tickets, Mr Taylor has a message: "Rush, rush, the tickets! "It's going to be a great series of events." 🎟️ Book now for The Herald's Unspun Live at the Edinburgh Fringe – featuring John Swinney, Anas Sarwar, Kate Forbes and more
