Southport attack survivor Leanne Lucas calls for 'blunt' knives to prevent more tragedies
ITV News' Jonathan Brown speaks to Leanne Lucas about her Let's Be Blunt campaign
Words by Jonathan Brown, North of England reporter, and Eleanor Gregory, North of England producer.
A woman who was stabbed five times while trying to save 25 young girls from a knife-wielding teenager in Southport says she fears another tragedy will happen if more is not done to tackle knife crime.
Leanne Lucas, a yoga instructor whose Taylor Swift-themed dance class was targeted last July, has launched a new campaign called Let's Be Blunt that she hopes will save lives.
The Southport attacker was armed with a kitchen knife he'd bought online.
The attack claimed the lives of three girls, while Leanne, local businessman John Hayes, and eight children were treated in hospital for serious injuries.
He was later jailed for a minimum of 52 years for the three murders, as well as the attempted murders of Leanne Lucas, businessman John Hayes, and eight other children who survived their injuries.
Today, the 36-year-old's new initiative is calling for the widespread adoption of rounded-tip kitchen knives to reduce knife-related violence.
She told ITV News that we need to "change the perception" of knives after she was critically injured herself.
'In my eyes I don't see change happening fast enough,' she said. 'Are we waiting for the next incident to appear on the TV? I'm not prepared to do that.'
Let's Be Blunt campaign calls on households, retailers, manufacturers, and policymakers to switch from pointed kitchen knives to safer, rounded-tip alternatives.
Leanne said: 'The kitchen utensil has the potential to become a weapon - I'm asking people to take an inventory of their kitchen... so that your kitchen becomes a safer place. It reduces the risk, reduces the impulsivity, and hopefully goes towards preventing knife crime in the future occurring.'
Six-year-old Bebe King, Seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, and nine-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar were killed during the stabbing.
Leanne told ITV News that she has launched her campaign not only for the three girls, but "for everyone" telling us "it's for them, the injured, and their families supporting them".
She added: 'Every day the girls are in my thoughts, if we can do something to help this not happen to other children, that's what we're going to do.'
Her life has changed since the incident, telling ITV News that she "had no purpose" and "didn't know what to do" but has now found a passion to give her and other people hope.
The latest ONS homicide statistics showed there were 262 murders involving a knife or sharp instrument in England and Wales in the year to March 2024, with 17 of the victims being children under the age of 16.
Kitchen knives were used in 44% of those incidents.
Taking her campaign to parliament, Leanne will give a speech at a special reception in the presence of Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.
The event is part of Knife Crime Awareness Week and has been organised by the Ben Kinsella Trust, a charity set up in memory of 16-year-old Ben Kinsella, who was stabbed to death in London in 2008.
Crime and Policing Minister, Dame Diana Johnson, has said that "nothing is off the table when it comes to getting lethal blades off our streets and keeping people safe" and that the government is exploring options to make changes by meeting with retailers and manufacturers.

Madeleine McCann: Portugal search continues but set to end after three days
Officers are compeleting their latest searches in Portugal, as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Search teams have spent three days scouring scrubland on the outskirts of Lagos in various abandoned structures – using equipment such as a ground-penetrating radar. It is understood the searches will finish on Thursday, as officers could be seen using a digger to remove rubble from more derelict buildings in the same area. Madeleine, aged three, went went missing while on hoiday with her family on the Algarve in 2007 after her parents went out to dinner and left her sleeping in a room with her twin siblings. The searches are being carried out by Portuguese and German authorities. ITV News understands police have been focusing on a location between Praia da Luz and the house where Christian Brueckner, the main and only suspect in the case, lived. German federal police requested the search to be carried out to obtain evidence that could implicate Bruckner, who is currently serving a prison sentence for raping a 72-year old women in Pria da Luz in 2005. He is due to be released in September. He has denied all the charges against him and any involvement in Madeleine's disappearance. The last search carried out took place in 2023, near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, around 30 miles from Pria da Luz. It was previously searched in 2008, when Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia paid for specialist divers to search it, after he claimed to have been tipped off by criminal contacts that Madeleine's body was there. Last month, Madeleine's family marked the 18th anniversary of her disappearance. They described her as "beautiful and unique" ahead of her 22nd birthday, and vowed to continue the search. A statement from Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann, and the family, said: "The years appear to be passing even more quickly and whilst we have no significant news to share, our determination to 'leave no stone unturned' is unwavering. We will do our utmost to achieve this." In April, ministers approved more than £100,000 in additional funding for Scotland Yard detectives investigating Madeleine's disappearance.

Missing British man found dead at the bottom of a lift shaft in Malaysia
A body found at the bottom of a lift shaft in Malaysia is that of a British backpacker who disappeared more than a week ago. Jordan Johnson-Doyle, 25, vanished after last being seen at a bar in Kuala Lumpur on May 27. His family issued an emotional appeal to find him and even flew out to the country to help the police search. But his body was found in a construction site lift shaft in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday, Malaysian authorities confirmed. A post-mortem found the 25-year-old's cause of death as a chest injury sustained from a fall from height. Police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa said no criminal elements were found at the scene. The mystery of Jordan's whereabouts began when his phone went dead on Friday, May 30, during his 18-month backpacking journey across Asia. He had been working for an American company on his travels and arrived in Malaysia on May 17 from Vietnam. The 25-year-old from Stockport had last sent his best friend Owen a photo from inside Healy Mac's Irish Bar in Bangsar on the evening of Tuesday, May 27. It is also believed the software engineer visited The Social, a bar near Healy Macs. Mum Leanne Burnett, 44, checked 'Find My iPhone' tracking service and saw Jordan's phone was in a residential flat nearby the next day. But two days later, his phone went dead, which concerned the family as Jordan regularly checked in with family. Leanne had only just spoken to Jordan on the Monday of that week, when seemed 'fine and normal', she told the Liverpool Echo. With the search for Jordan running dry, Leanne and her husband travelled to Kuala Lumpur to look for their son. Merseyside Police also confirmed their officers were working with local detectives to find the software engineer. Brickfields district police chief Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood confirmed to AFP that Jordan's body was the one found on the construction site. More Trending A FCDO Spokesperson said: 'We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Malaysia and are in contact with the local authorities.' The family previously spoke of their devastation as they tried to find Jordan. Leanne said: 'I have been been feeling just sick, numb. I just want to get over there, find him and bring him home. 'I want him to know we're looking for him and we're coming to get him.' Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Man allegedly murdered boy, 14, with sword in ‘brutal string of attacks'
Marcus Arduini Monzo denies murdering Daniel Anjorin, 14, in Hainault, north-east London, on April 30 last year, as ITV News' Ian Woods reports A man allegedly murdered a 14-year-old boy with a Samurai sword in a 'brutal string of attacks' that were indiscriminate, a court has heard. Marcus Arduini Monzo, 37, is on trial charged with murdering Daniel Anjorin during a 20-minute spate of attacks in Hainault, north-east London, on April 30 last year. He denies the charge as well as four counts of attempted murder. He told jurors they may conclude 'there can be little doubt that the defendant was intending to kill as many people as he could that day and that he is therefore just as guilty of the four charges of attempted murder as he is the charge of murder' Prior to the incident, Monzo had skinned and deboned his own cat, the prosecutor said. . It is alleged the first attack was when Monzo drove his grey Ford Transit van at speed into Donato Iwule. The pedestrian was knocked into a nearby garden on Laing Close and the vehicle smashed a concrete pillar and fence, the court heard. The defendant then got out of his vehicle and struck Mr Iwule in the neck with the sword, jurors were told. Footage played to the court appeared to feature Mr Iwule wailing and later running away after the alleged murder attempt that started at 6.51am. Mr Little told jurors: 'If he had not managed to escape it seems inevitable that he too would have been killed.' The defendant then re-entered the badly damaged van and drove a short distance down Laing Close, the court heard. Emergency services were called and police and paramedics arrived 'at the point and just after' the alleged attack. Pc Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield pursued the armed defendant through a series of alleyways through residential properties, the court heard. Monzo struck her three times with the sword that had a 60cm blade, the prosecutor said. She sustained 'significant injuries' that could have 'easily' killed her, he added. Monzo is accused of then entering a nearby house through a backdoor and walking upstairs into a sleeping couple's bedroom and attacking them. The defendant shouted to the couple on a number occasions, 'do you believe in god?' before leaving the property through the front door, the court heard. Police had been following the defendant and he was backed into a nearby garage area near to the other alleged attacks, the court heard. He is accused of then striking Inspector Moloy Campbell once with the sword before attempting to escape police. The defendant is said to have climbed on top a garage but he was eventually disarmed and arrested. Monzo denies Daniel's murder, and has pleaded not guilty to the attempted murders of Donato Iwule, Sindy Arias, Henry De Los Rios Polania and Pc Yasmin Margaret Mechem-Whitfield, as well as wounding Inspector Moloy Campbell with intent. He also denies aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article relating to a kitchen knife. Monzo previously admitted two counts of having an offensive weapon, namely two swords. Jurors were told these were the alleged murder weapon, and a Katana sword with a 22cm blade that was discovered in his van and had no blood on it. Mr Little argued there is 'no issue in this trial as to who carried out this brutal string of attacks and what the defendant did on that fateful early morning'. He said Monzo had been under the influence of cannabis, and that: 'We say that the defendant's conduct was brought about by self-induced intoxication in the form of drugs. 'We say this led to a psychotic disorder but not one meeting the requirements to make out the partial defence to murder of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.'
