Google fires around 200 employees from Global Business Unit, says report

India Today08-05-2025

Google has reportedly fired around 200 more employees, this time from its global business unit. The division is responsible for handling sales and partnerships at the Alphabet-owned global search engine major. The layoffs are said to be part of 'small changes' that Google is reportedly making to improve collaboration and customer service. Put together, this is now the third instance of layoffs at Google in quick succession this year.advertisementJust last month, the Mountain View-based company fired hundreds of employees from the division responsible for more marquee consumer-facing products, including Android, Pixel, and the Chrome browser. At the time, the layoffs were attributed to the company trying to move to become more nimble per a new strategy that would seemingly aid in making its platforms and devices unit operationally more effective. Some engineering roles at Google's Hyderabad and Bengaluru offices were also reassigned as part of the shakeup, reports have indicated. In February 2025, some employees [number is unspecified] from its cloud and HR divisions were also let go.The fresh round of layoffs (first reported by The Information) is meant 'to drive greater collaboration and expand our ability to quickly and effectively serve our customers,' Google was quoted by news agency Reuters as saying in a statement.advertisement
All this might seem like new – and brutal – but Google has been going through some of these internal changes and restructuring for a while now. Big job cuts started in January 2023, when Google-parent Alphabet announced that it would slash 12,000 jobs, which meant six percent of its global workforce.Big tech layoffs are a growing trend in the industry, with companies now increasing focus – and investment – in areas like artificial intelligence (AI) and data centres that would fuel it. Resources meant for other departments are being redirected in some or the way to streamline operations and efficiency.Google is not alone. Facebook-parent Meta fired around five percent of its 'lowest performers' in January to make way for more engineering roles, particularly those who specialised in machine learning. Microsoft cut 650 jobs in its Xbox division in September while Amazon laid off several employees in communication and other business units. Apple, too, is said to have cut 100 jobs in its digital services group last year.

After WhatsApp, Meta may launch Instagram for Apple iPad: What to expect

Meta-owned social media platform Instagram is reportedly developing a dedicated application for Apple iPads. Following the recent launch of WhatsApp for iPads, it now appears likely that Meta could introduce a native version of Instagram for iPad. According to 9to5Mac, Meta is working on an iPadOS-specific version of the app optimised for larger displays. A 9to5Mac report citing Bloomberg's Mark Gurman states that Meta is now 'full steam ahead' in its development of an Instagram application for Apple's tablet. Gurman noted, 'I'm told that employees on the Meta Platforms Inc. campus are actively testing Instagram for the iPad and that development work is full steam ahead. I would expect it to be released this year if all goes to plan.' Instagram for iPad: What to expect Optimised user interface: The app is expected to feature enhanced display scaling tailored for the iPad's larger screen, incorporating a refined layout that makes better use of the tablet's aspect ratio. Improved multitasking support: The native version will likely support iPadOS features such as Split View, facilitating easier navigation and improved interaction while multitasking with other applications. Exclusive layout options: The app may include design elements or interface modes exclusive to iPad, enhancing the overall experience. Upgraded Reels and video browsing: Users may benefit from smoother scrolling and enhanced video playback performance, with a more immersive, cinematic Reels experience in full-screen mode. Currently, iPad users can only access Instagram through the iPhone version of the app, which is not optimised for the tablet interface. This results in a stretched layout and subpar user experience, forcing users to rely on a zoomed-in iPhone app lacking features tailored for larger displays. Although specific details about the upcoming iPad version remain limited, the dedicated app is expected to deliver an interface that better aligns with tablet usage.

BigBasket pilots 10-minute food delivery with Starbucks, Qmin in Bengaluru

Grocery delivery firm BigBasket has entered the rapid food delivery segment, providing 10-minute food delivery service in select locations in Bengaluru . It comes five months after cofounder and chief executive Hari Menon announced on X that the Tata Group-owned firm was expanding its services to food delivery in 2025. He had said in a post in December 2024 that BigBasket would increase its stock keeping units to more than 30,000 in all tier-1 cities, launch pharma deliveries with Tata 1mg, as well as launch a food delivery service. Currently, BigBasket's 10-minute food delivery includes items from Starbucks , a joint venture between Tata Consumer Products and Starbucks Corporation, and Qmin , a food delivery platform owned by Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL). Launched in 2020, Qmin is Tata Sons-owned IHCL's food delivery service, which has its own app allowing customers to order food from Tata-owned hotels and restaurants. The service also has Qmin cafe offering bakery and confectionery products along with beverage items across the country. There are 11 such cafes in Bengaluru. Under its 10-minute food delivery service, BigBasket is offering beverages such as coffee, tea and juice, snacks, meal bowls and desserts. ET had reported in February that Tata Sons wasn't too pleased with what it regarded as BigBasket's sluggish response to the rapid rise of quick commerce in the country. Tata Sons also indicated that BigBasket should seek external investors for a proposed round of $1 billion (Rs 8,556 crore) to mount a fightback in this segment, according to people aware of the matter. 10-minute food delivery race Meanwhile, the rapid food delivery segment is seeing increasing demand as quick commerce platforms Zepto (Zepto Cafe), Swiggy (Snacc) and Blinkit (Bistro) are expanding their services and offerings. During its earnings announcement for the fourth quarter of 2024-25, Zomato 's parent Eternal said that it was doubling down on Bistro, its in-house rapid food delivery service, and pivoting away from restaurant partnerships for this service. Bistro is being expanded across Delhi-National Capital Region, Bengaluru and Mumbai, according to people in the know. Bistro now runs more than 100 kitchens in these markets. Swiggy , on the other hand, is scaling up its 10-minute food delivery service Bolt , which relies on select restaurant partners offering limited menus. It also has an offering similar to Bistro, which is called Snacc. On May 23, ET reported that Zepto paused operations of its 10-minute food delivery vertical, Zepto Cafe, in several cities including Delhi, Agra, Chandigarh, Mohali, Amritsar and Meerut owing to supply chain issues. This impacted the operations of 44 Zepto Cafe stores.
