Parents pack Seattle Public Schools meeting to protest student waitlists, option schools

The Brief
Parents at Seattle Public Schools protested a number of issues on Wednesday, including ongoing waitlists for students waiting to get into their schools of choice.
Parents and guardians said the school district was leaving some students in limbo.
SEATTLE - Parents and members of the public packed a Seattle Public Schools meeting to protest a number of issues.
Those included the subject of ongoing waitlists for students hoping to get into schools of their choice.
Parents and guardians said Wednesday that the school district was leaving some students in limbo.
"I'm here to talk about under-enrollment, yet, I see 400 families on the wait list," said one parent during public testimony.
Another dad, Phillip Duggan, says his child, Ronan, is one of the kids sitting nervously on a waitlist.
"We are trying to get into kindergarten at Hazel Wolf, which is a block away from us," said Duggan.
Instead, he says Ronan was assigned to a school further away. The five-year-old drew a picture of Hazel Wolf that Duggan brought to the school board meeting as an appeal to be let in.
"Always expected this to be where we were going and I was really excited. Now we are all a little bit worried and stressed. We are number five on the wait list," said Duggan.
Parent of a Cleveland student, Tammy Morales, also spoke out.
"Today we'll hear that school assignment decisions are being made to balance students. From my perspective, what's really happening is parents are being forced out of the district," said Morales.
She believes the answer isn't to block students, but instead to add staff.
"The answer is to staff and resource schools appropriately," said Morales.
"It's not that there is not enough space in these schools for teachers to teach them, it's a predetermined plan by the district on what schools they want to enroll in, and which ones they don't," said parent Erin Combs.
Combs said that she believes that putting a student on a waitlist could cost the district money.
"The district spent all of last year telling us that they had to close schools because enrollment was declining, and there was a major budget deficit. They actually didn't enroll over 2,700 kids in the schools that were trying to go to school here," said Combs. "21% of those, I think 450 some, ended up leaving the district entirely."
Parents say they are frustrated that students are turning to charter and private schools instead.
"If they can't go to the school that they think is best for their kids, they will go to a private school. We are reducing enrollment even further," said Duggan.
It's not clear what the district plans to do next regarding the wait lists.
Parents say they plan to keep engaging the school board about waitlists and option schools.

Travis Decker is wanted after being accused of murdering his three young daughters The sisters - Paityn Decker, 9, Evelyn Decker, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5 - were found dead on Monday Decker remains at large as local authorities continue to search for him in WashingtonTravis Decker remains at large as police in Wenatchee, Wash., and the surrounding area continue their multi-day manhunt for the missing father suspected of killing his three young girls over the weekend. Paityn Decker, 9, Evelyn Decker, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5, were found dead on Monday, June 2 near the Rock Island Campground in Chelan County, Wash., after authorities tracked down their father's abandoned car near where their bodies were discovered, PEOPLE previously reported. Decker, a former military man, remains on the loose according to local authorities, who provided a description of the father over the weekend as the search began. Here's what we know. The Wenatchee Police Department said in a statement over the weekend that Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia were all supposed to be with their father for a planned visitation over the weekend. 'The visitation was part of a parenting plan, but he has since gone outside the parameters of it which is not normal and cause for the alarm,' police said. The girls were last seen on May 30 and found dead on Monday, June 2, two days after police first launched their public manhunt. Police have said the 32-year-old Decker has former military experience and should be approached carefully, PEOPLE previously reported. 'It is unknown whether Decker is currently armed, but he may pose a significant risk,' police said in a statement in recent days. The Wenatchee Police Department said in its May 31 missing persons alert that Decker has recently been 'homeless and living in his vehicle or at various hotels/motels or at campgrounds in the area.' Decker has since been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of kidnapping, police have said. He is also facing custodial interference charges. A GoFundMe page set up for the girls' mother, Whitney Decker, has described the girls' deaths as 'heartbreaking.' "We are heartbroken to share that the girls have since passed ... the pain of this loss is immeasurable," organizer and friend Amy Edwards wrote. "I've known Whitney for years, we're both dance moms and theater friends [and I've] had the privilege of teaching Whitney's girls." The GoFundMe has raised nearly $400,000 in recent days. Edwards says the 'funds raised will go directly to Whitney to help cover final expenses, support time off from work, and give her space to heal without financial pressure.' 'Thank you for keeping Whitney and her girls in your hearts,' the family friend added. Read the original article on People

Popular Tampa dog bar Pups Pub closing, owners cite changes to state regulation enforcement

The Brief Pups Pub is closing its Tampa location this weekend. It comes after a years-long legal battle over state regulations. A farewell party will take place this Saturday at the dog bar off W. Kennedy Blvd. TAMPA, Fla. - A popular dog bar in Tampa will close its doors for good this weekend, with Pups Pub's owners citing a years-long battle over changes to enforcement of state regulations. The backstory Pups Pub opened off W. Kennedy Blvd. in 2020 after the Florida Dept. of Health approved several dog bars across the state. In a post on social media Tuesday, the bar's owners said the business passed all health inspections during its first two years of operation, and a second location opened in downtown Orlando in 2022. Dig deeper The owners said things took a turn that same year when a newly-promoted FDOH official "unilaterally reversed the department's interpretation, deciding that operating an indoor/outdoor dog bar – which had been fully approved and compliant under FDOH jurisdiction for years – was suddenly prohibited." Pups Pub took legal action against the state agency, which said dogs are not permitted inside a business where anything consumable is served – even ice. The bar's owners argued the state was misinterpreting its own food regulations. PREVIOUS: Legal battle continues for dogs in Florida bars, centered around pub with Tampa location In 2023, a judge ruled in favor of Pups Pub, but the state appealed. Court records show that the First District Court of Appeal reversed the 2023 ruling on April 30, 2025. The appellate ruling reads, in part: "We agree with DOH that the challenged statements applied the governing law. Therefore, they do not constitute an unadopted rule in derogation of the statutory requirement that agency rules be established through the formal rulemaking process. What they're saying In Tuesday's post on social media, Pups Pub wrote, in part: "The FDOH's legal strategy was to isolate a single business to set a precedent before enforcing it on the rest of the industry. More than a dozen other dog bars are expected to close in the wake of this rule." What's next Pups Pub Tampa will host a farewell party this Saturday, June 7, from noon until 11 p.m. The owners say franchisees have been working to open new locations in Brandon and Clermont, which will be open-air.
