Hiemer heroics gives Colin Healy a winning start

Irish Examiner09-05-2025

SSE Airtricity First Division: Kerry 1 (McQueen 17') Treaty Utd 0
Despite serving a one match touch line ban for an indiscretion dating back to Cork City in 2023, Colin Healy saw his Kerry FC side complete back-to-back wins for the first time since joining the LOI.
It was a back-to-back wins for the first time as well for Kerry FC but it was a win that was fortunate because Treaty Utd deserved at least a point in the second half but for second week in a row German born keeper Tim Oliver Hiemer gave an awesome display making at least six stunning saves.
After initial Kerry pressure that yielded only a volley from Carl Mujaguzi as early as the fifth minute from a Daniel Okwute free kick, Treaty then got on top for a 10 minute spell, forcing fours corner thanks to some excellent work by their captain Lee Lynch along with Lee Devitt.
Treaty should have taken the lead in the ninth minute when a sweeping move saw Lynch turn his marker and his strike from just inside the box, was brilliantly turned behind by Kerry keeper Hiemer. The visitors forced three successive corners with no return and Kerry began to trouble the visitors despite the fact of having only attacker Daniel Okwute up front in the absence of strikers, the injured Ryan Kelliher and suspended Luke Palmer.
Ronan Teahan was dominant at midfield and with Kerry playing the ball on the deck, the style definitely had Healy's imprint on it. Kerry made a crucial breakthrough in the 17th minute when Teahan forced a corner on the left. Oran Crowe floated it in to the danger zone and it was centre back Chris McQueen who rose highest and powered a header to net.
This goal appeared to deflate the visitors as Kerry's new formation of five at back was rock solid and Treaty did not trouble Hiemer for the rest of the half.
The home-side continued to play attractive attacking football but despite forcing a couple of corners and free kicks, they failed to add to McQueen's goal as Kerry retired 1-0 in front at the interval.
Treaty resumed a transformed side and should have leveled within two minutes of restart when Ben Lynch crossed and Mark Byrne volleyed wide of an open goal. Karl O'Sullivan was pulling the strings for Treaty and Kerry were on the back foot. Treaty were denied a goal when O'Sullivan floated in a dangerous corner but McQueen powerfully headed off his goal line.
Former Kerry striker Trip Vrljicak should have equalised in the 72nd minute but Hiemer made a stunning instinctive save.
But Treaty were throwing the kitchen sink at Kerry and Hiemer was like the little Dutch boy with his finger in the dam as he made incredible save after save. Despite 11 minutes of added time Treaty could not blow Kerry's house down and Kerry have posted back to back wins.
KERRY FC: T-O Hiemer; K Williams, S Aladesanusi, C McQueen, N Brookwell, A Dunne; O Crowe, C Mujaguzi, O Crowe, R Teahan, S McGrath; D Okwute. Subs: N Gleeson for Crowe (67), A Alabi for Teahan (inj 78), J Adams for Mujaguzi (88)

Kerry's Kennedy Cup set-up has novel father and son element to management and squad

Among the 20-man squad is the manager, Danny Diggins' son, Daniel, a commanding centre-back from St Brendan's Park, and also in the squad is Kian Cronin, son of assistant coach Ken Cronin Ten years after their historic Kennedy Cup triumph at the University of Limerick, Kerry's latest generation of young soccer players are preparing to make their mark. With the 2025 edition of the country's premier U14 boys competition just around the corner, anticipation is building once again as the Kingdom eyes another run at glory. The Kennedy Cup is the most prestigious competition for boys at U14 level in Irish football. Back in 2015, Kerry claimed the ultimate prize with a 1-0 win over the Dublin District Schoolboys League (DDSL) in a famous final that saw Mastergeeha's Dylan Murphy score the decisive goal. That DDSL side included future Republic of Ireland internationals Jason Knight and Nathan Collins, a testament to the calibre of player this competition often reveals. Now, a new Kerry squad is ready to showcase its talent on that same big stage.

Kerry aim to end Ulster opposition inferiority complex, Cork look for underage crumbs of encouragement

Two very different agendas for Cork and Kerry at O'Moore Park this afternoon. Let's throw in with Kerry seeing as their All-Ireland MFC quarter-final is the first of the Portlaoise double-header. Kerry's opposition is Cavan. Kerry's opposition is Ulster and so the hour's fare provides the latest opportunity to see how an underage Kingdom crop fares against a leading northern outfit. Not to throw in with hyperbolic statements but Kerry minor and U20 teams of late have developed something of an inferiority complex when stood opposite northern opposition. The results and the evidence speaks for itself. In the 2023 and '24 campaigns, Kerry's minor interest ended at the hands of Ulster opposition - Derry and Monaghan - at the All-Ireland semi-final stage. The year previous, the then Kerry management were visibly ecstatic on the Portlaoise sideline at scoring a one-point All-Ireland quarter-final win over Tyrone. The same management, the summer before, had suffered defeat to Derry in the delayed 2020 decider. So that's Kerry coming off second best in three of their last four minor outings against an Ulster team. At U20, Tyrone bettered them this year and last. Mercy Mounthawk suffered the same fate in the All-Ireland post-primary semi-finals of this year and last. The approach minor manager Wayne Quillinan outlined midweek is one, as results attest to, that Kerry underage teams of all hues have floundered against in recent years. 'Cavan are going to be ultra defensive. In fairness, they're really, really well coached. They're really hard to break down. Obviously with the numbers back, they're looking for turnovers. They're looking to break at pace.' For Cork, the challenge is a little less nuanced and rather more straightforward; that is to successfully negotiate the All-Ireland minor quarter-final hurdle. Derry, Dublin, and Mayo, by very different margins, have shown Cork the exit door at this stage of the championship over the past three years. The most recent of those was last June's worrying 3-14 to 0-6 beating by Mayo. Arriving as it did off the back of a 15-point Munster final whacking, the conversation and concern surrounding the health of the county's underage set-up had its volume turned up. Lamentably, the results did not spark any meaningful introspection by those in power. Following 10 and nine-point defeats at the hands of Kerry in recent weeks, Cork football and the current minor students could badly do with a performance and scoreline that provides crumbs of encouragement going forward. Encouragement, on the whole, has been in short supply for Cork football this summer. Across minor, U20, and senior, there have been 11 championship outings. The four victories are split into two categories. Two comfortable wins over Clare and Limerick at U20 and senior. And two incredibly near escapes against Tipperary at minor and U20. In short, Cork have not bettered a county at or above their station. Does that change here?
