Aussie Faces Death Penalty for Drug Arrest in Bali Surf Hub
Indonesia's drug enforcement laws are notoriously some of the strictest in the world. Mere possession of a minor amount of the country's Class 1 narcotics – which includes everything from heroin to meth to marijuana – can equate to years behind bars, and thousands of dollars in fees.
And the penalties only go up from there.
For one Australian native, he's facing the most severe legal repercussions possible for accusations of trafficking cocaine into the surf-rich region of Bali's Canggu. Lamar Ahchee is alleged to have smuggled (or, rather, received a package with) $1.1 million worth of cocaine, hidden in chocolate wrappers, when he was caught by authorities – and now he's facing the death penalty.
According to Ahchee's lawyer, he was set up. He didn't know what was in the packages. Per his legal representative, Edward Pangkahila:
'It's not true, he didn't admit [to dealing], he is shocked about the case, he never thought that would happen. Lamar has been set up by someone called 'Boss.' He was told to collect the package, but he actually didn't know what the package was… He thought it was a normal package. He's telling me that honestly, he doesn't know what was inside. We're still looking for that somebody who tell him to take this package.'This isn't the first time foreigners have faced the strict arm of the law in Bali, when it comes to drug charges. Not even close. There's a long history of surfers attempting to smuggle drugs into the country, through creative methods, and getting caught. For example, hiding drugs in surfboards has been a common tactic – although many have been caught.
Diving deep into the history, in a piece highlighting the dangers of drug smuggling in Bali from a past print issue, writer Kathryn Bonella spoke with those convicted. One accused summed it up as such:

They may claim there are new document requirements for Centrelink pensioners, new eligibility and verification processes for age pensioners. They may also claim your payments will be cancelled, suspended or halted if you don't meet new requirements or guidelines, or you could get a fine or debt if you don't take action. These are not true. Aussies lost $119 million to scams in the first four months of 2025, Scamwatch data found, despite the overall number of scam reports dropping by nearly a quarter to 72,230. Phishing scams accounted for $13.7 million in losses, nearly tripling compared to $4.6 million in early 2024. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has issued a similar warning after noticing clickbait websites claiming there would be changes to superannuation preservation and withdrawal rules from June 1. ATO deputy commissioner Emma Rosenzweig said it was 'classic fake news' and urged people to consider the source of information they see and to go to trusted sources like the ATO website, your super fund, tax agent or financial adviser. 'Beware of websites that might be trying to harvest your personal information such as your TFN, identity details or myGov login details,' she said. 'Think twice before acting on information heard from third-party sources, including non-official websites or on social media.' Services Australia has encouraged people to only trust information online about its payments and services from its official website, myGov or its official social media accounts. 'If a website URL doesn't end in . then it isn't an official government website,' Services Australia said. 'I think I take a lot of attention in the paint, and I had to be aggressive. That was nice,' Brown said, smiling. '(It was) the most comfortable I've felt since I've been here. 'I'm feeling more confident. Coach (Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts) just told me, 'Just be you, be dominant.' It's been an adjustment for me, so to feel some normalcy felt good… I'm happy.' On the flip side, Whitcomb has started every game this season for the Mercury. Again, both Sabally and Thomas have performed like superstars, so contributions from others haven't been necessary. 'One of the things that we told Sammy (when we were) trying to get her to decide to come here is that we didn't want her to just be a shooter,' Tibbetts said. 'She did more; she played on pick and roll a little bit. She got downhill, she used her quickness, and she made some really good plays for herself and others.' On the contrary, Brown lives and feasts in the paint. Her soft touch, footwork, and sheer physicality had defenders like Jessica Shepard having trouble. Australian job ads fall for second month in May, ANZ-Indeed data shows
SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australian job advertisements fell for a second successive month in May in a sign that the tight labour market may be slowly easing, though the number remained well above pre-pandemic levels. Data from Australia and New Zealand Banking Group and employment website Indeed showed the number of job ads dropped 1.2% in May from April, when they fell a downwardly revised 0.3%. Job ads in May were down 5.7% from a year earlier, though they remained 13.6% higher than pre-pandemic levels. "Although the ANZ-Indeed Australian Job Ads series has remained in a tight range of 114-117 over the last year, the May result is in the bottom of that range and marks the lowest level of job ads since March 2021," said ANZ economist Aaron Luk. "The labour market still remains tight, with robust employment growth and a low unemployment." The Reserve Bank of Australia cut interest rates to a two-year low last month as cooling inflation offered scope to counter rising global trade risk, and signalled willingness for further easing in the months ahead. The RBA has welcomed the strength in the labour market, with the jobless rate hovering at 4.1% for over a year now. It expects the unemployment rate to edge up slightly and peak at 4.3% by the end of this year.
