SINGAPORE – US defence secretary Pete Hegseth met with Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing on May 30, on the sidelines of the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue.
At their breakfast meeting, Mr Chan and Mr Hegseth reaffirmed the excellent and longstanding bilateral defence relationship, and the mutually beneficial partnership between Singapore and the United States, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said in a statement.
This partnership is anchored by a 1990 memorandum of understanding (MOU) that allows US military access to Singapore's air and naval bases. The MOU was last renewed in 2019 between then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and US President Donald Trump.
The two leaders also agreed on the the importance of the US' continued engagement in the Asia-Pacific, which is vital for regional peace, stability and prosperity, said Mindef.
At the meeting, Mr Hegseth said he appreciated Singapore's consistent support for US military presence in and engagement of the region, which includes the city-state's facilitation of rotations by US aircraft and vessels via rotational deployments, port calls, and aircraft stopovers.
Mr Chan, in turn, expressed appreciation for the longstanding support of the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) training in the US, and for providing the SAF with technology access, which includes the Republic of Singapore Air Force's acquisition and operationalisation of F-35 fighter jets, Mindef added.
This is the first time the duo has met. Mr Chan relinquished the education portfolio to become Singapore's Defence Minister on May 23. Mr Hegseth, a former Fox News host and a veteran of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, took office in January under US President Donald Trump's second administration.
In a Facebook post after their meeting, Mr Chan said he showed Mr Hegseth the view of the Republic from the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark.
He added that both of them had been alumni of Fort Benning, a US Army post in Columbus, Georgia.
Mr Chan, a former Army chief, said previously that his first visit to the US was to Fort Benning, while Mr Hegseth completed his basic military training at the army base.
'We had a good meeting where we discussed geopolitical developments and reiterated our shared commitment to regional peace, stability and prosperity,' said Mr Chan.
'We also reminisced about our time as infantry officers in our respective armies, including our memories of Fort Benning. I thanked him for the US' strong support for generations of SAF personnel training in the US.'
Mr Hegseth is set to speak at the Shangri-La Dialogue's first plenary session on May 31, titled 'United States' New Ambitions for Indo-Pacific Security'.
The annual dialogue, Asia's premier defence summit to discuss critical security challenges in the region, is set to be attended by representatives from 47 countries, including 40 minister-level delegates.

PHOTO: BLOOMBERG SINGAPORE – President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong extended congratulations to newly elected South Korean president Lee Jae-myung on June 5. Mr Lee was elected president in a June 3 snap election, six months to the day after he evaded military cordons to vote against a shock martial law decree imposed by his ousted predecessor. Singapore and the Republic of Korea enjoy substantive and multi-faceted relations, underpinned by robust economic links and strong people-to-people ties, wrote Mr Tharman in his letter. He noted that both countries are 'like-minded partners who cooperate well at multilateral fora and share a similar outlook on key regional and international issues, in particular the need to support free trade, multilateralism, and a rules-based international order'. Mr Tharman said that, with 2025 marking the 50th anniversary of Singapore's diplomatic relations with South Korea, he is confident that these close ties will continue to strengthen with Mr Lee's support and leadership. 'I wish you every success as you assume your new role and take the country forward,' said Mr Tharman, who also extended an invitation to Mr Lee to visit Singapore soon and wished him good health . PM Wong said in his letter that Mr Lee's victory reflected the confidence that the people of South Korea have in his leadership and vision. Also highlighting the close and longstanding friendship that Singapore and South Korea shared, PM Wong noted the strong and multi-faceted cooperation between both countries, including collaboration in new and emerging areas like the digital economy, energy and sustainability, artificial intelligence, start-ups, research and development and food security. 'We are like-minded partners on many regional and international issues, including the importance of a peaceful Korean Peninsula and an open, rules-based international trading system,' said PM Wong. Both countries are set to upgrade relations to a strategic partnership in October, and this also includes timely reviews of the Korea-Singapore Free Trade Agreement and the bilateral Air Services Agreement, said PM Wong, adding that he is looking forward to working with Mr Lee to advance this cooperation. 'I wish you good health and success as you assume office. I look forward to visiting the Republic of Korea later this year to attend the Apec (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Economic Leaders' Meeting, and to make an official visit where we can jointly launch the Republic of Korea-Singapore strategic partnership,' said PM Wong. North Korea slams Macron's ‘shocking claptrap' about its ties with Russia

An analyst said it is a mistake if Mr Macron thinks that he can cloak Nato's wicked intention to deploy the military in the Asia-Pacific region by taking issue with North Korea-Russia relations. PHOTO: AFP North Korea slams Macron's 'shocking claptrap' about its ties with Russia SEOUL - North Korean state media slammed French President Emmanuel Macron on June 5 over 'imprudent' comments on Pyongyang's ties with Moscow, calling them 'shocking claptrap'. In a commentary shared by North Korea's state news agency KCNA, analyst Choe Ju Hyun took aim at comments by the French leader during the recent Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. Mr Macron suggested that the Nato defence alliance could become involved in Asia if China did not do more to press North Korea to stop sending forces to help Russia's war in Ukraine. 'It is a mistake if Macron thinks that he can cloak Nato's aggressive and wicked intention to put dirty military shoes on the Asia-Pacific region by taking issue with the DPRK-Russia cooperative relations,' the commentary said, referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Mr Macron, Mr Choe wrote, was 'publicly recognised as a politician who loves to demonstrate his existence by making a series of shocking claptrap and unrealistic assertions unmindful of consequences'. 'France is obsessed with extreme self-assurance and is unable to properly judge the situation,' Mr Choe added. The analyst urged France to 'realise as early as possible that its contradictory behaviour keeps it from being recognised as a representative of Europe'. North Korea has become one of Russia's main allies during Moscow's more than three-year-long Ukraine offensive, sending thousands of troops to help the Kremlin oust Ukrainian forces from its Kursk border region.
