Maharashtra ATS conducts searches in Thane in terror case; 12 detained
Mumbai, The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad on Monday detained 12 persons after conducting searches in Thane district, including at the houses of some former office-bearers and members of SIMI, in connection with a terrorism-related case, officials said.
The Mumbai unit of the ATS, with the assistance of the Thane rural police, started searches around 4 am at Padgha and Borivali village in the district adjoining Mumbai, an official said without giving the case details.
Heavy security was deployed in the two villages, he said.
The ATS sleuths searched almost two dozen houses and the premises of former office-bearers and members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India , including Saquib Nachan, Aaquib Saquib Nachan, Abdul Latif Kaskar, Kaif Nachan and Shajil Nachan, he said.
Farak Zubair Mulla , a land broker and former member of SIMI, was also among those whose houses were searched, the official said.
It came to light that he had gone on Hajj in Saudi Arabia. His elder brother, Hasib Zubair Mulla, was accused in the 2002 and 2003 Mumbai train bomb blast cases.
Hasib served a 10-year sentence, and since December 9, 2023, he has been behind bars with Saquib Nachan at a prison in Delhi in an ISIS module case, the official said.
Abdul Latif Kaskar , whose house was also searched, works in a godown. He is a close friend of Farhan Suse, who was detained by security agencies in an ISIS module case in Delhi.
During the searches, six persons were not available at their residences, the official said.
The raids were on till the afternoon and the questioning of suspects went on for several hours, he said.
The ATS later took the suspects to Padgha police station where 12 persons were detained for further interrogation, he said without identifying them.
"We have identified certain individuals, and searches are going on accordingly," the official earlier said.
In 2023, the National Investigation Agency conducted searches in Padgha as part of a nationwide crackdown on the terror outfit ISIS and arrested several persons, including Saquib Nachan.

Pakistan a ‘Phenomenal Partner' in Counterterrorism, Says US Centcom Chief; Urges Strong Ties With Both India, Pakistan
New Delhi: The Commander of the United States Central Command (Centcom), General Michael Kurilla described Pakistan as a 'phenomenal partner in the counterterrorism world,' crediting Islamabad with a series of successful operations against ISIS-Khorasan and advocating for continued US engagement with both Pakistan and India. His comments come at a time when India has been working to persuade the international community that Pakistan remains at the centre of terrorist activity. Following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, the Modi government has sent parliamentary delegations across the world to lobby with government officials, lawmakers and civil society actors to directly condemn Pakistan and push for its diplomatic isolation. Testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee on June 10, Kurilla's comments were part of a wider argument that US strategy in South Asia should not be limited by zero-sum thinking. 'We have to have a relationship with Pakistan and with India,' he said. 'I do not believe it is a binary switch that we can't have one with Pakistan if we have a relationship with India. We should look at the merits of the relationship for the positives that it has.' 'Pakistan continues to hunt ISIS-K' These remarks came at the end of a broader response on ISIS-Khorasan, which he described as one of the most active terrorist organisations currently attempting to conduct attacks around the world, including against the US. He noted that through a 'phenomenal partnership' with Pakistan, dozens of ISIS-K fighters had been killed, and five high-value individuals had been captured, including Mohammad Sharifullah 'Jafar' , believed to be involved in the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing in Kabul. Please tell the Secretary of Defense and the President'.' In his written testimony , Kurilla further stated that 'Pakistan continues to hunt ISIS-K in their border areas, executing dozens of operations to kill and capture multiple leaders, including the mastermind of the Abbey Gate attack that claimed 13 American lives.' He also highlighted the arrest and extradition of Mohammad Sharifullah, calling it evidence of 'Pakistan's value as a partner in countering CASA terror EXOPs threats worldwide.' He added that it will 'and it will only increase as the Taliban continues to face security challenges within its borders'. During his first speech to Congress after beginning his second term , US President Donald Trump only mentioned Pakistan positively. While he criticised several countries for imposing high tariffs on US exports, he praised Pakistan for capturing and extraditing the terrorist involved in the attack that killed 13 US troops during the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. Following last month's military exchanges between India and Pakistan, Trump also publicly claimed credit for helping bring about a ceasefire. This statement drew irritation in New Delhi, but no strong protests, which has long opposed any third-party involvement in Kashmir. Trump has also not condemned Pakistan for the terror attack, frequently equating both New Delhi and Islamabad, and even stating that Pakistan has ' very strong leadership '. 'They are in an active counterterrorism fight right now' Despite recent success in degrading ISIS-K capabilities, Kurilla warned that the group remains a potent threat with ambitions beyond the region. 'These are the same individuals that did the Crocus City Hall attack in Moscow. They did the attack in Kerman, Iran, and they've attempted other attacks,' he said. He added it continues to manoeuvre along the Afghan-Pakistan border. 'Sometimes they'll try and go back into Afghanistan. We have the means to be able to collect, but for the most part right now they're hanging out right in that border area of Pakistan,' he said. General Kurilla also referenced the heavy toll that terrorism has taken on Pakistan itself, noting that 'in the beginning of 2024, Pakistan had over 1,000 terrorist attacks in the western area, killing about 700 security [personnel] and civilians and [leaving] 2,500 wounded.' 'They are in an active counterterrorism fight right now, and they have been a phenomenal partner in the counterterrorism world,' he said, praising Pakistan again. His assessment stands in stark contrast to the Indian position, as articulated again by External affairs minister S Jaishankar has insisted that Operation Sindoor targeted Pakistan's terror infrastructure directly. In an interview with a Brussels-based media outlet , he was asked why India's narrative was not resonating more strongly in international circles. Pakistan is a ‘phenomenal partner in counter-terrorism world': U.S. General
NEW DELHI Pakistan has been a 'phenomenal partner' to the U.S. in countering terrorism, said Gen. Michael Kurilla, the U.S. CENTCOM chief, on Tuesday. Speaking at a House Armed Services Committee Hearing, the Commander said Pakistan's military has captured 'at least five ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K)' terrorists using the intelligence provided by the U.S., and argued in favour of strengthening relation with both India and Pakistan. 'Since the beginning of 2024, Pakistan had over 1,000 terrorist attacks in the western area killing about 700 security (personnel) and civilians, and 2,500 [were] wounded — they are in an active counter-terrorism fight right now and they have been a phenomenal partner in the counter-terrorism world,' said Gen. Kurilla citing the Pakistani military actions against ISIS-K. Gen. Kurilla appreciated the Pakistan military for arresting Mohammed Sharifullah who was accused of orchestrating and providing material support for the August 26, 2021, suicide blast at Kabul airport that led to the death of at least 13 U.S. military personnel and at least 170 Afghan civilians in the backdrop of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The U.S. had blamed the attack on ISIS-Khorasan elements. Sharifullah, also known by his alias Jaffar, was flown to the U.S. in the first week of March. 'We're seeing Pakistan — with limited intelligence that we provided them — go after them using their means to do that and we're seeing an effect on ISIS Khorasan,' said Gen. Kurilla. He said that soon after the arrest of Sharifullah, Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir called him requesting that the information should be delivered to President Donald Trump. Following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, India intensified its campaign for stricter international measures against Pakistan to rein in terror outfits such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) that target Indian citizens and facilities. During the Operation Sindoor, Indian forces hit targets inside Pakistan that belonged to LeT and JeM. Gen. Kurilla, however, argued in favour of the U.S. engaging both India and Pakistan for advancing its security goals. 'We have to have a relationship with Pakistan and with India. I don't believe it's a binary switch that we can't have one with Pakistan if we have one with India. We should look at the merits of the relationship for the positives that it has.' He said that Pakistan's actions were eroding the ISIS-K that had carried out attacks in Russia as well as in Iran. Apart from Mr. Kurilla, Paul Kapoor, the incoming Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs has also said in a confirmation hearing that 'On Pakistan, if confirmed' he will 'pursue security cooperation where it is beneficial to U.S. interests.' The Ministry of External Affairs is yet to respond to the remarks from the CENTCOM chief. India has been engaged with the United States on cross-border terrorism from Pakistan and the Ministry of External Affairs had informed earlier that Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri who paid a three-day (27-29 May) visit to Washington DC had included 'counter-terrorism' in his agenda during the talks that he held there.
