Greek court charges 17 coast guard officers over 2023 migrant shipwreck

ATHENS : A Greek naval court has charged 17 coast guard officers over one of the Mediterranean's worst shipwrecks two years ago, in which hundreds of people are believed to have drowned, three sources said today.
The shipwreck of an overloaded migrant boat in international waters off the southwestern Greek town of Pylos on June 14, 2023, sent shockwaves across Europe and beyond. The naval court is still investigating the circumstances around the incident.
A coast guard vessel had been monitoring the boat, named Adriana, for 15 hours before it capsized and sank. It had left Libya for Italy with about 750 people on board. Only 104 of them are known to have survived.
Greek coast guard authorities have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing over the handling of the case.
Three legal sources said the 17 coast guard officers would be summoned by a judge to respond to accusations ranging from obstructing transport to causing or helping cause a shipwreck.
Contacted by Reuters, a Greek coast guard official said the service had not been officially informed about the charges and had asked to be briefed by the naval court.
Greece's judicial system has several preparatory stages and the compilation of charges does not necessarily mean that an individual will face trial.
Human rights activists and other protesters plan rallies across Greece on June 21 to mark the second anniversary of the Pylos shipwreck.
In February, the Greek Ombudsman recommended disciplinary action against eight coast guard officers, the first national probe into the incident to conclude.
Greece says that the coast guard operates with respect to human rights and that it has rescued more than 250,000 people since 2015, when the country was at the frontline of Europe's migration crisis.

Cops to summon organisers of LGBT event in PJ

Bukit Aman CID director Shuhaily Zain said the organisers of the event are expected to be summoned for their statements in the near future. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police will summon the organisers of a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) programme here to record their statements. Bukit Aman criminal investigation department (CID) director Shuhaily Zain said the number of reports received over the event has risen from 21 to 188. 'We will be summoning the organisers to record their statements in the near future,' he was quoted by Berita Harian as saying. On Saturday, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said his team had detected a post on social media, believed made by the youth wing of a political party, planning to organise the programme on June 21. Investigations are being conducted under Section 298A of the Penal Code (causing disharmony, hatred or ill will on the grounds of religion) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (improper use of network facilities). Hussein reminded members of the public not to participate in the programme, which is seen as violating the country's laws that do not support any form of LGBT practices.

Cartier tells customers some data stolen in cyberattack

Cartier is the latest company to be targeted by cyber criminals. (EPA Images pic) ZURICH : Cartier, the luxury jewellery company owned by Richemont, had its website hacked and some client data stolen, it told customers, according to an email seen by Reuters today. The attack is the latest case of a company being targeted by cyber criminals, with several retailers including Marks & Spencer and Victoria's Secret disclosing similar incidents. Cartier, whose watches, necklaces and bracelets have been worn by Taylor Swift, Angelina Jolie and Michelle Obama, said 'an unauthorised party gained temporary access to our system'. 'Limited client information', such as names, e-mail addresses and countries, had been obtained, Cartier said in the email. 'The affected information did not include any passwords, credit card details or other banking information,' it said, noting it had since contained the issue. The company said it had further enhanced the protection of its systems and data, as well as informed the relevant authorities, and was also working with 'leading external cybersecurity experts'. Cartier did not respond to a request for comment. Julius Cerniauskas, CEO of web intelligence firm Oxylabs, said the breach showed no brand is safe from cybercrime. 'Attackers are becoming more opportunistic and sophisticated, targeting brands that hold valuable customer data, not just credit card numbers,' he said. US lingerie company Victoria's Secret today disclosed that a security incident relating to its information technology systems had forced it to temporarily shut down its website for a few days last week. Victoria's Secret said the breach did not impact its financial results for the first quarter or cause a material disruption to its operations, but warned that its second quarter could be hit by the additional expenses incurred following the incident. British retailer Marks & Spencer said last month a 'highly sophisticated and targeted' cyberattack in April will cost it about £300 million in lost profits. Fashion brand The North Face, owned by VF Corporation, has also emailed some customers, saying it discovered a 'small-scale' attack in April this year. The company told customers the hackers used 'credential stuffing', trying usernames and passwords stolen from another data breach in the hope customers have reused the credentials across multiple accounts, the BBC said today. VF Corp did not respond to a Reuters request for comment. London department store Harrods also said last month hackers had attempted to break into its systems, following incidents at Marks & Spencer, and the Co-op Group.
