CM urges schools to finalise academic master plans by June 15

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday urged all schools in the State to prepare and submit an academic master plan by June 15, which will help improve the overall effectiveness of the education system alongside infrastructure development
Inaugurating the State-level school reopening ceremony at Kalavoor Government Higher Secondary School in Alappuzha, the Chief Minister announced that significant changes are in the pipeline, especially in the methods of evaluation. He said the government is working to bring the entire school system under a unified framework.
'Alongside raising academic standards, the mental well-being of students will be a core priority. The government is committed to standing by our students at every step of their educational journey,' the Chief Minister said.
Reflecting on Kerala's remarkable turnaround in public education, he noted that in 2016, nearly five lakh students had left government schools and over 1,000 institutions had shut down due to low enrolment. Over the past nine years, however, the State has invested ₹5,000 crore to revamp public education by introducing smart classrooms, upgrading infrastructure, and implementing student-centric policies.
Declaring the new academic year as the 'Year of Comprehensive Quality Improvement,' the Chief Minister praised the timely printing and distribution of textbooks ahead of school reopening. He stressed that the new educational vision should make learning a joyful experience and foster values such as critical thinking, empathy, and social responsibility.
Presiding over the function, Education Minister V. Sivankutty announced that over three crore textbooks had been printed and distributed before the school year began. He also highlighted a key reform—the successful implementation of a transparent online teacher transfer system. Additionally, he noted that student-authored content has been included in this year's curriculum.
A poem by Bhadra Hari, a student of SVVHSS, Thamarakkudy in Kottarakkara, was selected as the official theme song for the event. The piece was composed and sung by renowned music director Alphonse Joseph.
During the ceremony, the Chief Minister also released a book chronicling the achievements of the Department of Public Education, handing over the first copy to Minister Saji Cherian. Agriculture Minister P. Prasad attended the event as chief guest.

Everyone should be an eco-warrior: Minister

Everyone should become an eco-warrior, Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty has said. He was speaking after performing the State-level inauguration of 'Kalpakam' under the higher secondary National Service Scheme here on Thursday. The Minister called for spreading the message of loving nature as one would love their nation. He reminded students that climate change, deforestation, floods or drought, and the problem of waste were affecting daily lives of not only others, but our own too. Just as Kerala was a model for others in the area of education, it should emerge the leader in environmental conservation too. Efforts to create environmental awareness among students were being made in government and aided schools through initiatives such as Haritha Vidyalayam, activities of the Suchitwa Mission, anti-plastic campaigns, and popularising organic farming. Students should go beyond knowledge of the environment contained in textbooks and experience things themselves so that they can become protectors of nature, the Minister said. He underlined the need to ensure that all initiatives of the department were green. From new buildings to everyday activities, everything should be implemented in a eco-friendly manner, he said.

Kerala aiming to achieve ‘net zero emission' target by 2050: CM Pinarayi Vijayan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While India aims to achieve the target of 'net zero emission' by 2070, Kerala is planning to achieve the objective by 2050 itself thanks to its ongoing campaign named 'Net Zero Carbon Keralam Janangalioode', Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said. In an article on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, Pinarayi said efforts to achieve the goal of 'Carbon Neutral Kerala' or net zero emission were being carried out with people's participation. He said a total of 10 institutions have already achieved the target. He reminded that for the sustenance of the ecosystem, forests and its flora and fauna should be protected. 'The disappearance of green cover in Kerala that is undergoing rapid urbanisation is a matter of concern,' Pinarayi said. He added that June 5 would mark the launch of the project named 'Oru Thai Nadaam' by the state to plant one crore saplings. People from a wide cross-section of society will participate in the campaign that will end on September 30. Pinarayi exhorted people of the state to adopt an environment- friendly lifestyle to create a better tomorrow for the future generation. He reminded that the message of 'environmental politics' should reach political, social and cultural organisations in the state.
