What caused power outage in Spain, Portugal? Spanish PM says there's no conclusive information

As the supply of electricity started to be restored to parts of Spain and Portugal after the massive outage,
Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez
said there was no conclusive information on what caused the power outage. He said officials were trying to determine the cause and had not yet ruled out any theories, but he urged the public to avoid speculation.
Power has already been restored in parts of the north and south, he said, adding that the blackout has not resulted in any security problems.
'Use phones responsibly'
Sánchez urged people to use phones 'responsibly,' meaning making calls only when necessary and to keeping them brief to ease strain on the system. 'The government is working, and will continue to work, to learn the cause of this power outage. Right now, the priority is to work to restore normality as soon as possible,' he said.
Train services halted
Spain will not resume long- and medium-distance train services today, the country's minister of transport Oscar Puente said.
Authorities have been trying to rescue passengers from 116 trains that were stranded due to the power outage, Puente added. As of 12:30 p.m. ET, 26 trains were still to be evacuated.
Puente urged the public to avoid traveling by car but said road freight and public transportation were still operational.
Cyberattack behind power outage?
Antonio Costa, president of the European Council, said there were no indications of a cyberattack. Costa, who was prime minister of Portugal between 2015 and 2024, said he spoke today with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro. 'Grid operators in both countries are working on finding the cause, and on restoring the electricity supply,' Costa wrote on X. 'At this point, there are no indications of any cyberattack,' he added.
Portugese prime minister Luis Montenegro said the power outage originated in Spain. 'We have our intelligence services also trying to get to the bottom of what may have been at the root of the incident.'

'I will ensure that the house is not only restored to its original glory but also becomes a symbol of inspiration for the younger generation to imbibe the values the great leader stood for and learn about all that he did for his motherland,' Phal Dessai said. Now, new details emerge suggesting the man may have been framed. According to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to AP on condition of anonymity, investigators now believe the man, 54-year-old Ramon Morales Reyes, did not write the threatening letter Noem referenced. The letter had been shared publicly by Noem and her department, and was allegedly sent to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office. It contained a message written in blue ink threatening to shoot Trump at a rally and criticising deportation policies. Noem publicly announced the arrest and shared an image of Morales Reyes along with the letter on social media. The letter threatened to shoot Trump in the head with a rifle, and planned to return to Mexico afterward. A handwriting analysis reportedly showed that Morales Reyes' writing did not match the letter, and officials determined the threat was not credible. Officials now suspect that Morales Reyes may have been targeted in an effort to get him arrested and deported — a move that would prevent him from testifying in an upcoming assault trial in which he is a key witness. 'The investigation into the threat is ongoing,' the Department of Homeland Security said in an email to AP. 'Over the course of the investigation, this individual was determined to be in the country illegally and that he had a criminal record. He will remain in custody.' However, Morales Reyes' attorneys stated he is not currently facing any criminal charges, and they have not seen documentation of past convictions. Morales Reyes, who works as a dishwasher in Milwaukee and lives with his wife and three children, had applied for a U visa — reserved for undocumented immigrants who are victims of serious crimes and assist law enforcement. His application was filed by attorney Kime Abduli. Abduli strongly disputed the claim that Morales Reyes could have written the letter. 'There is really no way that it could be even remotely true,' she told the AP. 'We're asking for a clarification and a correction from DHS to clear Ramon's name of anything having to do with this.'
