Slugger Adolis García sits again as Rangers look for him to make 'mechanical changes' at plate
Associated Press
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Slumping Rangers slugger Adolis Garcia was held out of Texas' lineup for the third consecutive day Sunday, with president of baseball operations Chris Young saying the club wants the 2023 ALCS MVP to make some mechanical changes.
'We need him to kind of commit to some of these changes that we think will get him back to the '23 version of himself and help him be the player that we know he can be,' Young said before Texas' series finale against St. Louis.
García is hitting .155 in the last 20 games with 25 strikeouts. He is hitting .207 overall, with seven homers and a team-high 27 RBIs on a team that has struggled offensively. He ranked 14th in the majors with 122 home runs over the past four seasons.
García, who has started 55 of Texas' 60 games in right field this season, missed only one other game before this weekend, with manager Bruce Bochy saying Friday that García was being given a mental break.
'It's about the mental reset and coming back with more energy,' García told reporters Saturday. 'I'm working on some stuff without the pressure of having to do something up there.'
García, 32, is in the final year of a two-year contract.
The anticipated return of Evan Carter to the active roster on Tuesday, joining Wyatt Langford, Alejandro Osuna and Sam Haggerty, further crowds the field of Rangers outfield regulars as García tries to return to the lineup.
'It's going to be performance-driven at this point,' Young said.
Texas also made three roster moves before Sunday's game. Right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (triceps fatigue) was placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to last Thursday to allow him to start late this week, catcher Tucker Barnhart was designated for assignment and right-hander Codi Heuer was selected from Triple-A Round Rock.

Justin Rose is 15 years removed from his first PGA Tour win and still going strong
Associated Press DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Justin Rose has reason to feel his age at the Memorial when he sees his framed photo on the wall of his first PGA Tour victory. That was 15 years ago. 'It's quite amazing when I think about it like that,' he said. 'Fifteen years. The image I have is my little son Leo was kind of messing around in a bunker behind 18.' Rose turns 45 next month, and the number that should impress him is being No. 19 in the world ranking. He has had a few wobbles over the years but is fully entrenched in the top 50, eligible for all the majors for the 15th consecutive year. 'I think I'm getting to a stage in my career where that is the goal now, sort of having pride of performance and trying to buck the trend of what is a natural aging process,' he said. 'There are things that get more difficult, but yeah, you don't want to kind of believe it. I still think my good (golf) is good, which is what I've seen this year. 'It's been inconsistent this year, but my good is good, and that's the most important thing to see.' There are examples of players still going strong in their 40s, even as the PGA Tour trends younger. One would be longtime friend Adam Scott, who also turns 45 next month and is approaching 100 straight majors. Another longtime friend born in 1980 was Sergio Garcia. 'I think we're the three players that have kind of kept the form, in terms of just being out on tour and competing and popping our names up on the leaderboard once in a while,' Rose said. Rose also said he was inspired by Steve Stricker, who rediscovered his game after a deep slump and reached No. 2 in the world in his 40s. 'I think he won nine times in his 40s,' Rose said. 'I think he did it living in the Midwest, locking things up for winter, having a great family, didn't sacrifice the world in order to do it. He's a really good role model from that point of view.' Rose has the week off before going to the U.S. Open. He hasn't missed this major since 2010, right after he won the Memorial. It was his victory that led the USGA to create another exemption category to use the world ranking the week before the U.S. Open. Masters tickets The road to the Masters began Sunday for those wanting a ticket, and it will cost a little more. But not much, and it's still by far the best bargain for major sporting events. The Masters opened its lottery to apply for tickets, and Sports Business Journal reports a slight increase for practice-round tickets. It cost $100 in 2025. Next year the price is $125 for Monday and Tuesday, and $150 for Wednesday (which includes the Par 3 Contest). Tickets for tournament days (a maximum of two per day) are now $160, compared with $140 in 2025. Of course, the hard part is being able to purchase them. The lottery application ends on June 20, and winners are notified in July. The Nicklaus filter Jack Nicklaus has reached the age (85) and time around the PGA Tour (65 years) to speak freely. Very freely. He made that much clear during the broadcast Friday when television did a walk-and-talk with Ben Griffin as he played the 17th hole. 'I can't stand that, the interview on the golf course,' Nicklaus said when it was over. And he was just getting warmed up. 'Let me tell you how I think, how I feel,' he said. 'I mean, seriously, here's a guy who's leading the golf tournament, he's just hit the edge of the rough, he's got a very difficult shot on a very difficult hole, and you're talking to him about stuff that totally takes his mind off of what he was doing. 'How would you think (Ben) Hogan would respond to that question?' Nicklaus said. 'You would not have any teeth left if you did.' Nicklaus generally likes the advancements in the PGA Tour, understanding that times change. But he cares deeply about the integrity of competition. By the end of the week, he also said only what most people think. Scottie Scheffler was leading and eventually pulled away by playing the last eight holes with two birdies and six pars. Nicklaus said Scheffler did what he had to do with the competition chasing him. 'Ben Griffin's a nice player, Sepp Straka is a nice player, Nick Taylor is a nice player. Those were all the guys that were there basically coming down the stretch,' Nicklaus said. 'But he knows that those guys are not in his league. Now, if he would have had ... Xander (Schauffele) or somebody like that would have been there, he might have said: 'Well, that might be a little tougher. I might have to do something different.' He didn't have to.' Shades with a purpose The shades for which Ben Griffin is becoming known is not about style. Griffin, who won the Colonial and was runner-up to Scottie Scheffler at the Memorial, said he began seeing floaters a year ago and was told by his eye doctor that his retina was trying to detach itself. 'I had retinal holes, so I had to go get basically laser surgery to fill in those holes,' he said. 'I had eight retinal holes in both eyes, so I was at risk of losing vision maybe within five or six months had I not gotten the treatment.' He still sees floaters. The surgery was to maintain his level. The sunglasses help. 'When I wear sunglasses it's a little bit darker out, so I don't necessarily see the floaters as well,' Griffin said. 'So if it's really bright out and I'm not wearing the sunglasses, I look into the clouds or whatever and I see black stuff everywhere.' There's one other advantage. He says the glasses help reading greens. 'I love the ability to see the contrast a little bit better, then when it's really bright, it's kind of hard to see grain changes from time to time,' he said. 'So seeing contours is definitely a little bit easier I think with the sunglasses.' Divots The PGA Tour picked up another extension when Deere & Company agreed to a new deal that keeps title sponsorship of the John Deere Classic through 2030. ... Muirfield, which hasn't hosted the British Open since 2013, will hold the Women's British Amateur for the first time next year. The R&A also announced the British Amateur would be at Royal Liverpool. ... David Graham, the Australian great who won the 1979 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills and the 1981 U.S. Open at Merion, was selected as the Memorial honoree for 2026. ... Mexican brothers Carlos and Alvaro Ortiz both qualified and will play in the same U.S. Open for the second time. They also were at Torrey Pines in 2021. Stat of the week Max Moldovan is the only player to make it through U.S. Open qualifying in each of the last four years. Final word 'This old man, as long as he's around, is always here as a sounding board if you need it.' — Jack Nicklaus to the five Nicklaus Award winners from each level of college golf. ___ AP golf: recommended

Texas, Texas Tech Clash For 2025 Women's College World Series Title
Wednesday, June 4 starts the championship series in Oklahoma City with Texas facing Texas Tech in a best-of-three matchup. Both Texas and Texas Tech had to outlast six other softball teams to reach the championship series in Oregon, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida, UCLA, and Oklahoma. Texas defeated Florida 3-0 to open the World Series on May 29, as first baseman Joley Mitchell and left fielder Katie Stewart blasted three home runs off Gators' sophomore pitcher Keagan Rothrock in the win. (AP Photo/Vera Nieuwenhuis) Texas went on to defeat Oklahoma, their arch nemesis at the World Series on Saturday, May 31, 4-2. The Sooners gave up uncharacteristic first inning runs off a throwing error and a sacrifice from Texas catcher Reese Atwood. In the fifth and sixth, Kayden Henry and Mitchell made Oklahoma ace Sam Landry pay and sent balls into the outfield crowd. This was all the fuel that sophomore pitcher Teagan Kavan needed as she threw the complete game with eight strikeouts, one walk and only conceded one earned run. Kavan also revealed in the post game interview that she lost her grandmother earlier that morning and the win was for her. (AP Photo/Vera Nieuwenhuis) Texas had traditionally struggled to beat the Sooners, as they were 1-11 against OU until Saturday. There was also a bit of extra motivation for the Longhorns as they had previously been swept by the Sooners for the title in 2022 and 2024. Texas then faced Tennessee on Monday, June 2 and the Lady Vols had to beat the Longhorns twice, as they had previously lost to Oklahoma on Thursday, May 29, 4-3. Although the Lady Vols had battled back from their opening loss to OU and sent UCLA to the loser's bracket in five innings, 11-3 on Sunday, they ultimately fell to Texas, 2-0. Texas scored off a solo home run from Stewart in the fourth and then again in the sixth off a throwing error from Tennessee third baseman Taylor Pannell. For the Texas Tech Red Raiders, they opened the World Series with a 1-0 win over Ole Miss. In the win, Alana Johnson roped a double down the left field line to score teammate Lauren Allred. This would be all the run support that ace NaJaree Canady needed as she threw a complete game shut out with 10 strikeouts and only conceded two hits, both in the sixth inning. (AP Photo/Vera Nieuwenhuis) Tech went on to face and defeat UCLA, 3-1 on Saturday, May 31. Tech was the significant underdog in the matchup as UCLA has been to the World Series a record 33 times and are 12 time champions, most recently in 2019. The Red Raiders seemed unfazed by the big moment as head coach Gerry Glasco called a gutsy delayed home steal in the fifth inning for Tech's first run. UCLA would also score in the fifth inning off a home run from Kaniya Bragg to tie the game, 1-1. Texas Tech scored again in the sixth off a solo home run from shortstop Hailey Toney and in the seventh when Raegan Jennings singled to left center and scored Alana Johnson who had walked previously in the inning. Canady again showed her dominance in the circle as she threw all seven innings for the Red Raiders and allowed four hits, two walks, and struck out seven batters. (AP Photo/Vera Nieuwenhuis) In their final game in route to the championship series, Texas Tech faced the ultimate Goliath in Oklahoma, the four-time consecutive NCAA champions. The Red Raiders got out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as outfielder Demi Elder ripped a triple to right field which scored Johnson, who walked in the previous at bat. Then third baseman Bailey Lindemuth singled to left center and scored Elder. There would be a pitching dual and battle for the remaining four innings between Canady and Oklahoma's Sam Landry but in the seventh inning, when only three outs remained, Oklahoma would tie the game. Outfielder Abby Dayton blasted a high change up over the right field fence and broke up Canady's shutout. Dayton had previously only hit two home runs all season. The Red Raiders won in the bottom of the seventh as Mihyia Davis singled, followed by a double to the left field wall from Lindemuth, to put runners on the corners. Toney would once again be the hero for the Red Raiders as she sent a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Davis for the win, 3-2. Texas Tech pitcher NaJaree Canady celebrates on the mound. The Red Raiders defeated No. 2 overall ... More NCAA seed Oklahoma to head to the championship series against Texas starting Wednesday, June 4, 2025. Texas is seeking redemption as they have been in the championship series three times since 2022, but have yet to capture the elusive title. Canady had taken Stanford to the World Series in 2023 and 2024, but transferring to Texas Tech and playing for Glasco has allowed her to get to the title series for the first time. There has never been an in-state championship series. The only time two teams from the same state have faced off for the national title were when Fresno State and UCLA (1982, 1988, 1989, 1990) and UCLA and Cal (2003) competed in what was a single game showdown. The first game of the series will take place on Wednesday, June 4 at 8 pm EST on ESPN, followed game two on Thursday, June 5 at 8 pm EST also on ESPN. The if necessary game is slated for Friday, June 6 at 8 pm EST on ESPN. Follow me on X, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

Longhorns Softball pitcher Teagan Kavan is in the midst of a stellar playoff run in WCWS
Longhorns Softball pitcher Teagan Kavan is in the midst of a stellar playoff run in WCWS Teagan Kavan is having a remarkable playoff run During the Longhorns softball playoff run they have gotten contributions from many different places. However, few have been better than Teagan Kavan. The Iowa native has led the Longhorns pitching staff while frustrating hitters on a nightly basis. With her leading the way, Texas has been hard to stop. Through her first three games during the Women's College World Series, Kavan has posted a 0.53 ERA and struck out 12 batters. She has only allowed one earned run and has given the Longhorns a chance to win every time she takes the mound. While the talented Sophmore has made headlines, she has also built on her play in the regular season. In her second season as a Longhorn, Kavan set career high in appearances with 40 and strikeouts 224. Although she saw a massive increase in innings, the Longhorns righty was up to the challenge and took her game to a new level. That has continued in the playoffs. The Longhorns star will get to build on her success on Wednesday when Texas takes on Texas Tech. Again, She will be relied on heavily as Texas looks to set the tone in the first game of the series. With Kavan leading the way, Texas has a very good chance of pulling that off. With the Longhorns only a few wins from a title, Kavan is close to reaching a significant milestone. She has also helped make history, as this season marks the first time in program history that the Longhorns have played for a national championship in back-to-back seasons. Kavan has been a big part of the pitching staff both times. For the Longhorns, her dominant play has been a welcome sign when it is needed most. Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @LonghornsWire.
