Under the Big Top: Cirque du Soleil's latest show to come to Laguna Hills
Penelope Elena is a hair suspension artist and insists her practice is not a trick.
'It is an ancient discipline, a circus discipline,' Elena said. 'People always think it's fake, but you actually really hang all your weight from your hair.'
Elena has been doing dance and gymnastics since she was 4 years old and at the age of 8 began specializing in contortion. She went on to master aerial silks and hoops. About seven years ago she began to develop her hair suspension discipline.
'People always asks if it hurts and yeah, it hurts the first time you hang, but then you get used to it,' she said.
Elena is among the talented performers featured in Cirque du Soleil's 'Echo,' coming to Laguna Hills from May 23 to June 29, when the world-renowned circus arts show raises the big top at the former site of the Laguna Hills Mall.
'Echo' is Cirque du Soleil's 20th tented, or big top, show, taking place under a large-scale circus tent rather than in a theater or stadium. It tells the story of a young girl named Future and her best friend, the Dog, as they explore a fantastical world with a mysterious cube at its center. The two friends discover how their actions shape the world while their story celebrates the bond between animals and nature.
Each Cirque du Soleil show is unique with its own narrative and style and for 'Echo,' the creators aimed to build a new modern universe for a big top presentation.
'I think the aesthetics of 'Echo' is very different, it has a very contemporary design,' Elena said.
'Echo' includes new acrobatic feats, musicians, dancers, circus performers and jugglers.
'[The show] is really accessible for all ages,' said Henrik Veres, a juggler featured in Cirque du Soleil's 'Echo.' 'Every act has something that certain ages can relate to.'
Like Elena, Veres began honing his talent at a young age.
'I was actually born in a circus family,' Veres said. 'I am the sixth generation of circus performers in my family.'
By the age of 12, Veres had focused on the discipline of juggling and was performing in front of a live audience by the time he was 14. He joined Cirque du Soleil in 2018 and has been on tour with 'Echo' for two years.
Elena and Veres spent a recent afternoon visiting various Laguna area landmarks, including the beach and the Sawdust Festival Village, in full makeup and costume for photos to promote the upcoming show. They are excited to bring the tour to Orange County and look forward to inspiring audiences with their very real talent and the 'Echo' story.
'Every Cirque show has a message and this one kind of has the message that every action causes a reaction,' Veres said. 'I hope when they watch something like this they get inspired enough to know that everybody matters and doing good deeds in life will bring some good back to you as well.'
Most regular tickets for Cirque du Soleil's 'Echo' cost $78 per person, with some shows priced at $68 and the 1 p.m. June 1 show priced at $83. There are also special group rates and VIP packages. Visit cirquedusoleil.com/echo for details.

Street Fighter 6 sees Capcom follow the road Nintendo abandoned in Animal Crossing by adding a collection of stone-cold NES bangers
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Capcom has added NES games to its roster of retro titles included in Street Fighter 6, and I fear it's a better drop than most of the Nintendo Switch Online NES games. We haven't seen this kind of game-within-a-game generosity since Animal Crossing on the GameCube. Out of all the third party Nintendo Switch 2 launch games, Capcom's Street Fighter 6 is arguably the best of the bunch (and by arguably, I mean it is but I don't want the Cyberpunk fans to come after me). Alongside the game's arrival on the Switch 2 this week, Capcom has released the final fighter of the games DLC Season 2 – that being Elena from Street Fighter 3 – as well as dropping a new balance patch into the game. Since it launched, Street Fighter 6 has allowed you to play some Capcom arcade classics within it, from the likes of classic Street Fighter titles, the all-time banger Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, and even out there choices like Savage Bees. However, with this new update, Capcom has folded NES titles into the game (presumably in celebration of its arrival on a Nintendo platform. The four titles included are a great selection of some of the best games on the NES and Street Fighter 2010 (spotted by Push Square). Included are Mighty Final Fight, which is a chibi remake (demake?) of Capcom's classic arcade beat 'em up which is canon to the Street Fighter universe. On the Street Fighter side there is Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight, which is a really rough side scroller that feels like a different game that had the Street Fighter brand slapped on it at the last second. Finally there's a one-two punch of two of the best NES games ever made: Bionic Commando and Mega Man 3. Bionic Commando is a 2D side-scroller where you're unable to jump and must rely on your robot arm to get business done, and still holds up as a classic today (although the Xbox 360 remake is better). And Mega Man 3 is, to put it simply, a banger. It's arguably the best Mega Man game there is, and probably the best game available in SF6's classic game roster (except Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, no one's touching that). Despite being a big supporter of Nintendo usually, Capcom has barely touched the Nintendo Switch Online apps, with Ghosts and Goblins being the only series that consistently gets releases on there. Granted, the Mega Man games are all in the Mega Man Legacy Collection, but Bionic Commando is a glaring omission that's finally going to be on Switch 2. Over a decade ago, Nintendo fans started getting used to the idea of NES games coming as free pack-ins with then-modern titles. We had examples like the extensive selection of retro titles in the original Animal Crossing, or the version of NES Metroid you could unlock by connecting Prime and Fusion together. Of course, the Wii Virtual Console a few years later taught Nintendo that fans were more than willing to pay extra for access to NES, and that's culminated in the Nintendo Switch Online library we can subscribe to today. Here's hoping Capcom doesn't get wind of the idea that these games could be sold with us to stay in the loop for all the upcoming Switch 2 games you need to known about.

Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts Reunite for Son Sasha's High School Graduation in New Photos of the Blended Family
Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts are celebrating their graduate! On Thursday, June 5, the former couple reunited to celebrate their 17-year-old son Sasha's high school graduation. In one photo posted to Schreiber's Instagram, Watts could be seen wearing a multicolor maxi dress and straw hat, posing next to Sasha and her husband, Billy Crudup. On Sasha's other side, Schreiber stands next to his son with a film camera around his neck, posing alongside his wife, Taylor Neisen. Sasha stands in the middle, wearing a gray suit and tan shoes. "The graduate!!!" Schreiber wrote in his caption. Watts also included a similar photo on her Instagram Stories, adding a sticker that read, "Congrats!" Alongside Sasha, the two also share daughter Kai, 16. Schreiber is also dad to daughter Hazel Bee, 20 months. Back in May, Watts shared photos and videos of her son Sasha on her Instagram Stories all dressed up and ready to go to his high school prom. In one snap, Watts and Schreiber posed together for a selfie with their son, who wore a dark suit and boutonniere, in the middle. Other pictures and clips showed the teenager with some of his fellow prom-goers and a large shot of the entire class celebrating the momentous occasion. The former couple ended their 11-year relationship in 2016. Since then, Watts and Schreiber have been open about remaining friends and putting their children first. 'We're doing things very differently. I'm pretty proud of us, corny as that may sound,' Watts told Net-a-Porter in August 2019. 'We've made it our absolute priority to be good and kind to each other and we're absolutely committed to that.' On March 6, PEOPLE caught up with the Perfect Couple actor at the Cirque Du Soleil New York City premiere of Luzia, where he was joined by his son. When asked how it felt to be walking carpets with his eldest, Schreiber admitted it's an adjustment process. 'It's strange,' the X-Men star told PEOPLE. 'I felt a little self-conscious walking into the circus with him because, like, it's the kind of thing you do with your kid.' Schreiber added, 'He doesn't feel like my kid anymore. He feels like a man now, so, it's a whole different thing for us.' Read the original article on People

Under Armour highlights Maryland HBCUs in new sneaker launch
A new social media campaign from Under Armour highlights Greek life at two of Maryland's historically Black universities. For a launch of Under Armour's newest lifestyle sneaker, the UA Echo, Baltimore-based photographer Devin Allen shot the 'Sisterhood in Style' campaign on Bowie and Morgan state university campuses, according to a Monday news release from Under Armour. 'The campaign spotlights collegiate women from the nation's first Black Greek-letter sorority for college women, styled in bold, expressive looks that reflect both tradition and individuality,' it says. 'More than a product spotlight, Sisterhood in Style reflects UA's broader commitment to innovation and community, empowering the next generation to show up boldly, break boundaries, and define their own style codes,' the news release says. The UA Echo sneaker, now in a pink and green colorway, is on sale online for $150. This isn't Under Armour's only collaboration with local schools. The company donated to the athletic programs at Baltimore City College and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in October when it created new merchandise for the high schools. Have a news tip?
