Fairmont Hometown Market series holds first event for 2025
Buckhannon's 83rd Strawberry Festival honors first responders
FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WBOY) — Vendors and other local merchants were battling against strong gusts during Fairmont's first Home Town Market in 2025 Saturday afternoon, but that didn't keep people away from enjoying the live music and otherwise pleasant temperatures.
Organized by Main Street Fairmont, the Home Town Market series in downtown Fairmont features dozens of local vendors and food options, many of which had to resort to holding down their tents or awnings to prevent them from being blown away entirely.
While the weather posed challenges to some vendors on Saturday, Executive Director of Mainstreet Fairmont, Alex Petry, said the markets are a great way to bring more attention to local and downtown businesses.
'They need supported right now, our small businesses need supported, and this is a celebration of everything that's awesome about downtown,' Petry said.
Each Hometown Market this summer will have a different theme, with May 17's theme being 'Music On Monroe.' Live music was provided during the event by The Fridley Boys and Weary Space Wanderer.

Future Hometown Markets will be held on the third Saturday of every month through September:
June 21 — Pride Block Party (in Partnership with Fairmont Pride)
July 19 — Annual Friendly City Car Show
Aug. 16 — The Annual Tomato Festival
Sept. 20 — The End of SummerBash!

National Weather Service issues tornado, severe storm watches for Hampton Roads
At 2:39 p.m. on Sunday, the National Weather Service in Wakefield, VA, issued a tornado watch for a areas in Hampton Roads, including Hampton and Newport News. Other nearby areas affected by the watch include Poquoson, Williamsburg, Gloucester, James City and Yorktown. Cities and counties in central, east central and eastern Virginia are under a watch, as well. The tornado watches are in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday. Additionally, at 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, the NWS issues a severe thunderstorm watch that is set to last until 10 p.m. the same night. A number of Hampton Roads cities and counties are on the list, including Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Norfolk and Suffolk. Other areas included in the watch are Appomattox, Isle of Wight, Prince Edward County and Sussex. A number of North Carolina counties are affected by the weather alert as well, such as Currituck County, Northampton County, and Camden County. ____

Ranch Fire in Santa Cruz County remains at 2,751 acres, now 60% contained
The Ranch Fire, a 2,751-acre wildfire burning in Santa Cruz County, is 60% contained as of June 8, according to InciWeb, a federal website that tracks wildfires. Sparked by a lightning strike to a tree on June 4, the fire is burning about 19 miles southeast of Patagonia in the San Rafael Valley. Fueled by dense grasses and brush, strong winds have driven the flames from state land into the Coronado National Forest. Throughout the week, large air tankers worked with crews on the ground to suppress the flames, aided by cooler overnight temperatures and increased relative humidity. Crews are continuing mop-up operations along the fire's perimeter and within areas of heavy vegetation, as they work toward full containment. The Santa Cruz County Office of Emergency Management has downgraded all residents to the "Ready" phase of the "Ready, Set, Go" emergency response system. High pressure is still under control but slowly starts to drift to the east. The SW breeze will once again dominate, keeping the chance of sea breeze showers and storms near the coastline.
