This Chrysler coupé was slammed by Jeremy Clarkson, but it's now a great bargain GT

There are plenty of things people can't forgive Jeremy Clarkson for, but near the top of my list is his comparison of the Chrysler Crossfire coupe's rear end to a dog relieving itself.
He has certainly caused worse offence, but now, whenever I see a Crossfire coupe, it's hard not to recall that unpleasant analogy. It's a shame, really, because the Crossfire has a striking design - not necessarily because its rear half resembles a fleeting scene from parks across the country.
The car's exterior was largely the work of American designer Eric Stoddart, part of a team led by Briton Trevor Creed. But the real story behind the Crossfire goes beyond the design team. It stems from the so-called 'marriage made in heaven' between Daimler and Chrysler - more accurately, the takeover of Chrysler by Daimler, orchestrated by Juergen Schrempp and Bob Eaton, who presented it as a merger of equals in 1998.
In reality, it was far from equal. The deal triggered the departure of some of Chrysler's top engineers, led to a decline in quality for some Mercedes models, and brought about a period of muddled product planning especially for Chrysler.
Despite clear financial and marketing risks, the companies pushed to integrate their platforms and parts, combining a high-volume, low-margin American brand with a lower-volume, high-margin premium brand. But that's a story of its own.
One of the more curious products to come out of this merger was the Chrysler Crossfire. Its development was significantly accelerated by the ready availability of Mercedes hardware to serve as its foundation.
As the first-gen SLK was bowing out, the Crossfire, sharing many of the same parts but built by Karmann in Germany, was just coming on stream.
Standard cars featured Merc's 215bhp 3.2-litre V6 and a six-speed manual, although a five-speed auto was available. Thrilling to drive, it is not. Dozy recirculating ball steering and all that. But it does work well as a relaxing GT.
The supercharged SRT-6, with 330bhp and uprated suspension and brakes is much sharper. But is still hamstrung by that recirculating ball system. And it's only available with an auto.
Is the Crossfire a dog's dinner then? Absolutely not. Prices start from sub £3000, it's largely reliable and most parts are shared with the SLK, so are easy to find.

Shocking moment NASCAR mechanic is struck by a flying tire during pit stop

A shocking moment occurred during a NASCAR race last weekend when a pit crew member was struck by a flying tire. JP Kealey was working as a tire changer for Shane Van Gisbergen when fellow Trackhouse Racing driver AJ Allmendinger came in for a pit stop at the same time as Van Gisbergen. But things went awry at the Pocono Raceway when Allmendinger, as seen in footage from his car, slid deep into his pit box and knocked a tire out of his own pit crew member's hands. That caused the tire to go flying towards a nearby Kealey, and the object drove his air gun into his side. Kealey, a former pro lacrosse player, was seen briefly hunched over in pain on the ground before resuming his work. However, it was later revealed by Skip Flores of the Stacking Pennies podcast that Kealey had been hospitalized with two cracked ribs. Glad our pit crew teammates on the 88 were okay after this little issue on pit road. JP is TUFF so we know he'll be alright. 💪 — Kaulig Racing (@KauligRacing) June 22, 2025 Kealey then added to Bozi Tatarevic that he had also suffered a partially collapsed lung. Following the scary moment, rookie driver Van Gisbergen finished 31st at The Great American Getaway 400. Trackhouse Racing has since named Noel 'Bud' Merrill Jr. as a substitute rear tire changer for this weekend's Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. According to an online bio, Kealey played lacrosse collegiately at Robert Morris University, and was the 10th overall pick of the National Lacrosse League Draft in 2017. He began his pro playing career with the New England Blackwolves before suiting up for the Buffalo Bandits. Kealey also works as an assistant boys' varsity lacrosse coach for Charlotte Latin School in North Carolina.

America's fifth-largest car company slammed for 'hideous' sporty mom vehicle

A family-moving SUV just got a performance makeover. The internet doesn't appear sold. Nissan is rolling out a sport-tuned version of its high-rolling, three-row Armada SUV, a near-luxury set of wheels that already starts at $60,000. The new trim is called the Armada Nismo — it's set to hit dealerships lots this fall. It's also hugely important for an automaker that recently posted flagging sales and a CEO change. The standard Armada got a full redesign for this year, swapping its aging V8 engine for a more efficient and powerful V6. The style reboot features a boxier look with width-spanning LED taillights, extra chrome, and a plush seven- or eight-seat interior. Now, Nissan is cranking up the attitude. The Nismo trim adds red interior and exterior accents, reworked lower body panels, and a squatter stance. Under the hood, the Nismo gets a 35-horsepower bump and tweaked valves that deepen the exhaust sounds — but only if you spring for premium fuel. 'Armada NISMO expands the Armada family to connect with drivers who share a passion for excitement, performance, and bold, sports-inspired design,' a product spokesperson told Still, some car buyers aren't convinced. 'Marketing and research must be making up numbers,' a Redditor chimed about the design. 'Who is going to buy this? Another added: 'That grill is hideous.' While Nissan hasn't revealed pricing yet, current Armada trims range from $59,000 to $82,000. That positions the Nismo squarely in the territory of premium family SUVs — a growing, lucrative market segment in the US, where large vehicles continue to dominate new car sales. But the launch comes at a tricky time for the automaker. Nissan has faced shrinking profits, leadership shakeups, and ongoing headwinds from President Donald Trump's 25 percent automotive tariffs — a policy that affects models like the Japan-produced Armada. The Nismo's sporty vibe continues into the big car's interior, with red quilted seats in all three rows The V6 engine is smaller than last year's outgoing V8 - but it still delivers more horses Nissan has been in big trouble for months. In November, executives at the company warned the automaker only had '12 months' of cash on hand to survive. Its financial position comes after turmoil in the C-suite. Carlos Ghosn, the former CEO who helped revive the company in the 2000s, was arrested in 2018 by authorities in Tokyo. They believed the executive misused company assets. Ghosn was flown out of the country in a plane's cargo in 2019. He has remained in Lebanon since. In his absence, the company had an aging portfolio with old transmission technology. The cars were built at dozens of factories around the world, leaving the company extremely susceptible to global onshoring trends. A leadership vacuum appeared at the company after his legal turmoils. Makoto Uchida, a Japanese executive, took over, but was ousted after six years. Ivan Espinosa took over as top boss earlier this year. Despite selling the fifth-most cars in the US last year, Moody's, a credit agency, downranked Nissan to 'junk' status earlier this year.

Mercedes-AMG Recalls Most of Its $2.8M Hypercars Over Fire Hazard

Mercedes-Benz Recalls Are Few, But Important Recalls aren't something you usually associate with Mercedes-Benz. The brand has maintained a relatively clean track record in recent years, with only occasional hiccups, such as the recent issues with the high-end GLE and GLS SUVs involving potentially detached trim panels that could become road hazards. But while those models are made in the thousands and often share parts with less expensive offerings, the situation becomes far more serious when it involves a $2.8 million, hand-assembled hypercar. 0:00 / 0:09 2025 Audi S3 vs Mercedes-AMG CLA 35: the executive decision Watch More That's exactly the case now, as Mercedes-AMG is issuing a global recall for the AMG One, a car best known for packing Formula One tech into a lap record-setting, road-legal package. The Problem Isn't With the Complex Engine According to Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), nearly 80% of all AMG One units are affected – 219 out of the 275 produced, to be exact. The issue has nothing to do with the car's complex 1.6-liter turbocharged hybrid V6, which is adapted from Lewis Hamilton's F1 power unit. Instead, the concern lies at the rear of the car: the active spoiler system. The spoiler is hydraulically operated, and several cars appear to be missing a critical component, which is a small pin or locking mechanism meant to keep the hydraulic line secured. Without the pin, there's a risk of hydraulic fluid leaking. That's especially dangerous in a mid-engine car, where lines run near extremely hot components. If flammable fluid escapes in the wrong place, a fire is probable. The cars affected were built between December 2022 and May 2025, with most units delivered in Germany and a smaller number scattered globally. Mercedes-Benz will inspect the spoiler's hydraulic system, check if the pin is present and secure, and install one if needed. The job takes about 90 minutes per car. The KBA has stated there are no confirmed fire incidents tied directly to this defect. However, if you could recall, a couple of AMG Ones have already gone up in flames – one just a few weeks ago in Germany, and another during transport in the UK back in 2023. In both cases, the exact cause of the fires remains murky. The German unit reportedly burned roadside, while the UK incident involved a prototype or incomplete car in a trailer that was destroyed. Investigators haven't officially connected these incidents to the hydraulic issue. Source: Mercedes-Benz About the Author Jacob Oliva View Profile
