‘Third-best season ever': Over 6.5 million skiers visited Utah's resorts during the season
SALT LAKE CITY () — 'Greatest snow on Earth,' Utah's long-running slogan, is proving itself true after another successful season at Utah's ski resorts. According to Ski Utah, this last season was the third-best in state history.
There are 15 ski resorts across Utah, and together they recorded 6,503,635 visitors during the 2024-25 season, which has just wrapped up. According to a press release from Ski Utah, this is the third-highest number of skier visits in state history.
This season's skier visits were down 3.6% from last year, the press release says, but the more than 6.5 million visitors this year show a 3.3% increase over Utah's five-year average.
Utah's economy benefits greatly from recreation at the ski resorts. Ski Utah's president and CEO, Nathan Rafferty, emphasized skiing's impact on Utah.

'To hit our third-best season ever and generate $2.51 billion for Utah's economy is a major win,' Rafferty is quoted in the release. 'The ski industry in Utah supports approximately 25,000 jobs, and with the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games on the horizon, the eyes of the world will be on us once again. We're excited about the opportunities ahead and grateful to all who helped make this season a success.'
Ski Utah says that ski resorts are already hard at work to prepare for the upcoming 2034 Winter Olympics. In the next two years alone, 13 new lifts are expected to finish construction and open, and many resorts are planning upgrades to their mountain areas.

Lawmakers backtracking on July 1 deadline for NC budget
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Top North Carolina lawmakers say they likely will not have an approved budget by the end of this month, backtracking on previous hopes of having it done by then. Senator Phil Berger says you just need to look at the two budgets from the House and Senate and you'll see hundreds of differences that need working out. 'My sense is we've got to resolve the issues with reference to revenue package before we can have productive, substantive discussions about a full budget on those other issues,' Senator Berger said. On the House side, there's no real urgency. 'We don't feel a pressure here really to pass a budget by July 1, again because of the prior changes in the law, the money continues on just like it was under the prior budget,' Representative Destin Hall said. That means even without a final budget, state employees still get paid, and the government continues. But top Democrats say the state needs a budget and it's not up to them anymore. 'We actually have Republicans running both the House and the Senate, they have the override here, and yet we don't actually have a budget, so this is infighting between Republicans,' Senator Sydney Batch said. If there's no final budget by July 1st, Senator Berger says lawmakers will likely take a break and then come back. Democrats take issue with that if it means Hurricane Helene relief is delayed. 'We're going to go home and take a break, and they never take a break from not having a house, not having any food, not having a school for their kids to go to,' Senator Batch said. But that may not be the case. 'The sense within the Senate is that if we do adjourn at the end of the month without a budget and plan to come back at a certain time, there are some things with reference to Helene recovery that we'll probably need to do before we leave town,' Senator Berger said. Representative Destin Hall also says they do have a commitment to state employees and teachers to get them raises in a timely manner, so he's keeping that in mind as well. The Issue: Simone Biles slamming Riley Gaines for not 'uplifting' trans athletes in women's sports Simone Biles obviously attended former Vice President Kamala Harris' school of nonsense speech. Her apology tweet was straight up gobbledygook ('Finding Balance,' June 11). Advertisement Biles' original tweet was much clearer in establishing her cowardice in supporting men in women's sports, only once she herself had all her medals and bowed out. Elizabeth Clancy Barnegat, NJ Advertisement Simone Biles has seven Olympic gold medals tucked away safe and sound where no transgender female can defeat her out of them ('Gaines back flips script,' June 9). In 2017, Biles tweeted that men competing against women could take away gold medals from women. But now, Biles has blasted sports activist and former college swimmer Riley Gaines for consistently standing up for women's sports to be for true women only. I'd bet my last dollar that Biles is setting herself up for a lucrative deal to be a sportscaster in gymnastics.
