‘I also wanted to bat at that number': Shubman Gill on slotting in at No.4 in England series

Indian Express5 hours ago

India Test captain Shubman Gill said that after Virat Kohli retired last month, both him and head coach Gautam Gambhir felt that the 25-year-old will slot in the No.4 position in the batting lineup in the 5-match Test series against England, scheduled to start from Friday.
'After Virat Bhai retired, me and GG (Gautam Gambhir) bhai had a discussion about it and we were both clear that he wanted me to bat at No. 4 and I was also clear that I also wanted to bat at that number,' he said.
Gill also revealed that he had picked the brains of both his predecessors in Kohli and Rohit Sharma during the IPL in order to prepare for the England series.
'I met both of them in the IPL and they told me about their experiences, especially here in England, and some of the challenges that we might face here,' he said.
'I think the Test series that we played against England in India (2023-24) was one of the best that I have been part of and even in that Test series, not many of our senior players were available in every match. How we went about (in) that series was the way that I think the series is also going to be,' he added.
The captain once again talked on creating a 'secure' environment for his players to ensure they deliver their best.
'If we succeed in creating that environment, then I think our Test series and WTC cycle will be very successful,' he said.
Gill also emphasised on giving longer ropes to deserving players.
'It's about (having) clear communication; what you want from them? Trying to assign roles, how they would want to go about their things. Having the confidence to be able to back them with their natural game (as to) how they want to play this game,' he said.
'Definitely there would be some players that you tend to give long ropes just because of their pure potential that you see. But having said that, it's all about giving them clear communication and having honest conversations with them and that's how I feel the bond of a leader and a player is (at) the best,' he added.

SL vs BAN: Pathum Nissanka's 187 puts Sri Lanka in strong reply against Bangladesh

A career-best 187 by the stylish Pathum Nissanka led Sri Lanka to 368-4 in its first innings on the third day of the opening Test against Bangladesh on Thursday. That left the home team 127 runs adrift of Bangladesh, which had piled up a total of 495 all a featherbed surface, Nissanka produced an innings of sublime timing and poise, the sort that makes connoisseurs purr and opponents wince. Nissanka, whose two previous Test hundreds had come overseas, finally notched his maiden century on home vs BAN , 1st Test Day 3: Highlights A double hundred looked not just probable, but inevitable. Alas, as it so often does in cricket, the second new ball brought about his downfall. A touch too eager to assert, Nissanka offered a drive too early, left a gap between bat and pad, and was clean bowled by Hasan Mahmud.'I was disappointed with the way I got out,' Nissanka said. "I knew I had to see off the new ball. I thought the shot was on, but it was a good piece of bowling as well."We have been conscious about the run rate. We knew we were not scoring too quickly in the last cycle of the World Test Championship. That is one of the things we wanted to address. I hope we have done that sufficiently in this Test match and we look to keep doing that moving forward.'advertisementDebutant Lahiru Udara, also looking assured during a brisk 29 off 34 balls, peppered the boundary with six well-timed fours before offering a return catch to Taijul Islam off a leading Chandimal then stitched together a 157-run stand for the second wicket with Nissanka, his 54 oozing class until a faint tickle down the leg side off Nayeem Hasan ended his 38-year-old Angelo Mathews, in his final Test appearance, appeared in decent touch during a fluent 39 before falling to Mominul Haque, the part-time spinner luring an edge to wicketkeeper Litton Das.'It was an honour to bat with Angelo,' Nissanka said. 'He is an amazing guy. He has done a lot for the game and has helped me out too.'Captain Dhananjaya de Silva (17 not out) and the versatile Kamindu Mendis (37 not out) then took Sri Lanka to the close of play with an unbroken 37-run partnership. With more batting depth to come and time on its side – should the weather hold – Sri Lanka will fancy its chances of claiming a first-innings Sri Lanka wrapped up the Bangladesh innings inside 15 minutes. Asitha Fernando took 4-86 while Milan Rathnayake and Tharindu Rathnayake picked up three wickets fast-bowling coach Shaun Tait said: "Sri Lanka are a team that was competing for the WTC final six months ago. I think they batted really well. The pace bowlers missed a trick with the new ball. It would have been nice if they had taken a couple of wickets with the new ball.'I think we would have taken our score at the start of the game. We got a good score. We can't ask much more than that from Bangladesh.'

"When New Leadership Role Comes...": Ben Stokes On India Test Skipper Shubman Gill

Ahead of the first Test against India, England skipper Ben Stokes said that the visitors have an "exciting time" in the longest format of the game as they have announced young Shubman Gill as the new captain of the national team. After batting wizards Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bid adieu to Test cricket last month, India was left short on experience. With India bereft of its torchbearers, the management turned to youngsters to mark the beginning of a new era. After their decision, the captaincy baton was passed from Rohit to Gill. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Ben Stokes told the media, "I think Subhman Gill is a very fine player. He's been around a long time now, considering he's only young. He's played a lot of cricket, a lot of IPL cricket, actually a lot of cricket for India. I think it's an exciting time for Indian cricket to be under the new leadership. It's a lot of pressure to be the captain of any Indian team. But yeah, it's an exciting time. I think it is always for teams when a new leadership role comes into play. So yeah, obviously, he will be my opponent for the next six weeks so that I won't go into it too much, but all the best." At 25, Gill has become one of the youngest players to hold the position in recent years. Though he lacks captaincy experience in the red-ball format, he has led India in a five-match T20I assignment in Zimbabwe in 2024. Gill has also been captaining the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gill has also served as vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is. He was Rohit Sharma's deputy in India's victorious Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE in February 2025. In Test cricket, Gill has played 32 matches and scored 1,893 runs, including five centuries. India tour of England will take place from June to August 2025, with matches to be played at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London). A new era beckons for India in the Test format as the modern-day giants gear up for their first assignment without the prized batting bigwigs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Shubman Gill, India's youngest Test captain, has taken the baton from Rohit to guide the nation to success and challenge for the World Test Championship mace. India squad for England Test series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc, wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. England on Wednesday announced its playing XI for the opening Test of the five-match series against India, which will kick off on June 20 at Headingley. For the opening Test, England has retained the majority of the XI they fielded against Zimbabwe during the one-off Test last month. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett will open for England, followed by Ollie Pope at number three. England Playing XI for the 1st Test: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (C), Jamie Smith (WK), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir.

A look at Hardik Pandya's family: The people who shaped the cricketer

Hardik Pandya, one of India's most explosive all-rounders, is someone who comes from a fiercely determined family. From a struggling home in Baroda to international stardom, his rise has been powered by a father who gave up everything, a brother who walked the same path, and a mother who held them all together. Here's a closer look at the people who helped shape the cricketer's life before it took to the field. Himanshu Pandya: 'The father who risked it all' Himanshu Pandya may not have been a coach or selector, but his role in Hardik's success is impossible to ignore. He ran a small car finance business in Surat until he gave it up, moved to Baroda, and chased a dream that wasn't even his. This decision came at a cost. According to OneCricket, the family faced intense financial strain. Himanshu took odd jobs just to make sure his sons had what they needed to play cricket. That struggle left a deep impression on Hardik. In 2021, tragedy struck. Himanshu passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest. Hardik rushed home from national duty and later shared an emotional farewell: 'You were a happy soul! I will miss you every day, dad.' In a Times of India interview, he spoke about how grateful he is for everything he has received and that he believed his father was still watching over him. Nalini Pandya: A quiet backbone While Himanshu was the risk-taker, Nalini Pandya was the steady hand. She kept the family grounded through both the financial hardships and her husband's declining health. As OneCricket notes, she was a key force behind Hardik's ability to stay focused and driven through uncertain times. Brothers in arms and on the pitch Hardik's relationship with elder brother Krunal Pandya goes beyond family—it's cricketing kinship. Krunal, who joined Kiran More's academy first, paved the way. Together, the two played countless matches across Gujarat, sometimes earning prize money that helped the family stay afloat. Krunal carved out his own path, representing India and making his mark in the IPL. As of 2025, he is part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore setup after stints with Mumbai and Lucknow. Hardik Pandya's ex-wife and child In 2020, Hardik married Serbian model and actress Natasha Stankovic. That July, they welcomed their son, Agastya. But four years later, the couple announced their divorce. In a joint statement quoted by Mint, they said, 'After four years of being together, Natasha and I have decided to mutually part ways... We are blessed with Agastya, who will continue to be at the center of both our lives.' Despite the split, Hardik has embraced fatherhood fully. He has spoken in interviews about how Agastya brings calm to his chaotic cricketing world as both a source of joy and a reminder of what truly matters.
