Delhi to get urban river management plan for Yamuna's revival
New Delhi: Aiming to revive the Yamuna and other water channels in Delhi, the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is steering the development of an Urban River Management Plan (URMP) for the national capital, an official said on Friday.
The initiative seeks to redefine Delhi's rivers as vital ecosystems, paving the way for sustainable and inclusive urban river management in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, said the official from the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
The URMP in Delhi will serve as a model for other metropolitan cities, anchoring the vision of resilient and river-sensitive urban development, said a statement.
The NMCG has also approved an annual master plan focusing on integrating river-sensitive urban planning in 145 growing cities.
The annual master plan for the River Cities Alliance (RCA) lays a roadmap of round-the-year capacity-building programmes, knowledge exchange platforms, development of technical tools, expert guidance and creation of Urban River Management Plans (URMPs).
Launched in 2021, the RCA is a pioneering initiative led by the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
A major focus this year will be the promotion of river considerations within city master plans through the organisation of River-Sensitive Master Planning (RSMP) training programme across states, said a statement.
Simultaneously, to support the formulation of Urban River Management Plans (URMPs), the NMCG will conduct training sessions including onboarding programs specifically for RCA cities in Tamil Nadu, with further sessions planned for additional states, it said.
The year ahead will also see the development of 25 more URMPs as part of the first phase of a larger mission to create 60 such plans across India over the next two to three years.
Supported by the World Bank, this initiative marks a bold step in deepening river-sensitive urban governance. Steering Committees have already been constituted in states like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal to facilitate plan formulation and guide implementation, said the statement.

Cabinet approves two multitracking projects across Jharkhand, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved on Wednesday (June 11, 2025) two railway projects covering seven districts in Jharkhand, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh with a total cost of ₹6,405 crore. One of them is the doubling of the 133-km-long Koderma-Barkakana track, which not only passes through a major coal-producing area of Jharkhand but also serves as the shortest and a more efficient rail link between Patna and Ranchi. The second project is the doubling of the 185-km Ballari-Chikjajur track that traverses through Ballari and Chitradurga districts of Karnataka and Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. According to the government, the approved multi-tracking project will enhance connectivity to approximately 1,408 villages, which have a population of about 28.19 lakh. 'These are essential routes for transportation of commodities such as coal, iron ore, finished steel, cement, fertilisers, agricultural commodities, petroleum products, etc. The capacity augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 49 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum),' it said. The increased line capacity will significantly enhance mobility, resulting in improved operational efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways. These multi-tracking proposals are poised to streamline operations and alleviate congestion, a government press note said. 'The projects are in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modiji's vision of a New India, which will make people of the region 'Atmanirbhar' by way of comprehensive development in the area which will enhance their employment/self-employment opportunities,' it said. The Railway Ministry said that the projects are a result of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity which have been possible through integrated planning and will provide seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods and services. 'The two projects covering seven districts across the states of Jharkhand, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 318 Kms,' the Ministry added. Talking about their environmental benefits, the Ministry said that the Railways, being an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient mode of transportation, will help both in achieving climate goals and minimising the logistics cost of the country, reduce oil imports (52 crore litres) and lower CO 2 emissions (264 crore kg), which is equivalent to the plantation of 11 crore trees.

Cabinet clears ₹6,405 cr railway doubling projects in three states
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved two major railway projects with a combined estimated cost of ₹6,405 crore. The projects, spearheaded by the Ministry of Railways, aim to bolster connectivity and improve the freight transportation network across key states. The projects include: -Koderma–Barkakana Doubling (133 km): This section traverses the coal-rich region of Jharkhand and serves as the shortest and most efficient rail link between Patna and Ranchi. "The increased line capacity will significantly enhance mobility, resulting in improved operational efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways. These multi-tracking proposals are poised to streamline operations and alleviate congestion," the CCEA said in a press release. Expanding connectivity, employment opportunities The approval is part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multimodal connectivity. Through integrated planning, these projects aim to ensure seamless movement of people, goods, and services across regions. Spanning seven districts in Jharkhand, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, the projects will expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 318 km, benefitting nearly 1,408 villages with a combined population of around 2.81 million. These routes are vital for transporting key commodities such as coal, iron ore, finished steel, cement, fertilisers, agricultural produce, and petroleum products. The capacity augmentation is projected to handle an additional 49 million tonnes of freight annually. "The Railways being environment friendly and energy efficient mode of transportation, will help both in achieving climate goals and minimising logistics cost of the country, reduce oil import (520 million litres) and lower carbon dioxide emissions (2,640 million kg) which is equivalent to plantation of 110 million trees," the press release said.
