Lake Elmo assistant principal injured in fight between students
An assistant principal at Oak-Land Middle School in Lake Elmo was taken to the hospital on Friday afternoon after he was assaulted while trying to break up a fight between students during eighth-grade recess, officials said.
Assistant Principal Christopher Dunn, 44, was treated at a local hospital and released, officials said.
'An altercation took place between two students and then one of the students assaulted a staff member,' according to the report issued by the Washington County Sheriff's Office. 'I handcuffed the student and then investigated the incident.'
The incident, which caused a 25-minute modified lockdown at the school, remains under investigation, police said. It was reported around 12:10 p.m. Friday.
In a letter to families, Principal Ann Giardino wrote that 'a physical altercation took place between two students, requiring an immediate response from our administrative team and our School Resource Officer to safely de-escalate the situation.'
The school was placed in a 'hold' for 25 minutes 'to ensure the safety of all students and staff,' Giardino wrote. During a hold, students remain in their classrooms and instruction continues without interruption, according to Giardino.
A hold might be used if there is a medical emergency in the building or when school officials need to limit traffic in the hallways, according to the district's website. Students remain in their classrooms with doors locked, but classes continue as normal.
'Please know that the safety and well-being of everyone in our school community is always our top priority,' Giardino wrote.

Rogers City Council member arrested for DWI, speeding
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A former Rogers police chief and current city council member was arrested by the Washington County Sheriff's Office over the weekend for allegedly driving while intoxicated. Hayes Minor, 53, was booked into the Washington County Detention Center on Sunday night on charges of DWI, speeding and following too close. He was released around three hours later on a $1,105 bond. A preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said around 11 p.m. on June 11, a deputy was driving on Interstate 49 near mile marker 62 when they saw a car driving faster than the 55 mph speed limited posted. The driver, later identified as Minor was reportedly driving a Cadillac Escalade 72 mph. The deputy noted in the report that Minor was allegedly driving too close a white SUV ahead of him, being less than a car length behind it. A traffic stop was then initiated near mile marker 65. The deputy said in the report that a strong odor of intoxicants was coming from the vehicle. Minor told the deputy that he was leaving a baseball game and drank two beers over the course of the game. The deputy had Minor step out of the vehicle and he reportedly swayed. Minor's eyes were bloodshot and watery, according to the report. Minor took field sobriety tests and a breath sample test which indicated a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .109, above the legal limit. Minor currently serves on the Roger City Council, representing Ward 3, Position 2. He was selected in December 2024 after winning a runoff election against Alicia Hayes. His term is set to expire on Dec. 21, 2028, according to the city's website. He previously worked for the Rogers Police Department, where he first began service in 1994. Woodbury: East Ridge teacher on leave following report of racial slur
A female teacher at East Ridge High School in Woodbury was placed on administrative leave Thursday after she reportedly repeatedly used a racial slur while talking with students, officials said. The teacher was 'immediately walked out of the building' after students reported the staff member had used the slur, said Shawn Hogendorf, a spokesman for South Washington County Schools. The teacher, who was not identified, was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, he said. In a letter sent to families, Principal Jim Smokrovich wrote that he received a report Thursday morning that the staff member used a racial slur 'while discussing inappropriate comments a student was making toward other students.' The staff member 'repeated the racial slur multiple times during the conversation,' Smokrovich wrote. 'As soon as we were made aware of this situation, we met with the students who reported what they heard the staff member say, and connected with their families,' he wrote. 'Understandably, the students were upset by the use of the racial slur. We are grateful to the students who were brave enough to bring this forward and to support our East Ridge values.' Staff are available to meet with students if they are 'in need of additional support to process this incident,' he wrote. East Ridge 'does not tolerate derogatory, discriminatory or racist language,' he wrote. 'As educators, we must be held to the highest possible standard. I offer my sincere apology for the actions that took place in our school.' Officials in the school district last fall banned a substitute teacher from its classrooms after he allegedly reenacted George Floyd's murder during classes at Woodbury High School. Meanwhile, the South Washington County school board on Thursday night voted 5-2 to update the district's racial equity and inclusion policy to remove duplications and clarify definitions and language. Board members Ryan Clarke and Eric Tessner dissented. The rewritten policy states that district administrators will 'condemn hate speech and expressions of racism, xenophobia, discrimination and ethnic or racial intolerance.' Panama City man gets 45 years in prison in the 2023 killing of a woman in Washington County
CHIPLEY — A Panama City man entered a no contest plea and was sentenced to 45 years in prison in the 2023 death of a woman in Washington County. Jeffrey Andrew Schuller, 53, accepted a plea agreement May 20 after a Washington County jury was selected in his trial on murder charges in the killing of Dawn Kristen Langford. On July 12, 2023, about 5 a.m. the Washington County Sheriff's Office got a call from a man saying he was driving down Firetower Road and saw a woman in the road who appeared to be dead, according to court documents. WCSO deputies and Emergency Medical Services found her dead when they arrived with a gunshot wound to her chest. When investigators arrived, they found a single 9-mm spent casing nearby. Using a fingerprint device, investigators identified her as Langford, 42, of Bay County. Investigators interviewed nearby residents, and one man said he heard a gunshot between 10 and 11 p.m. the night before. They also found tire tracks leading away from the victim consistent with a full-sized truck, according to the arrest affidavit. The Bay County Sheriff's Office and the Panama City Beach Police Department found places Langford frequented. According to the affidavit, investigators found video footage from three different sources showing her being picked up and dropped off at different stores by a man in a black Ford with an extended cab. They later identified Schuller as the driver, court documents say. On July 11, 2023, investigators said Schuller dropped Langford off at a Big Bucks gas station and sped off after what appeared to be a disagreement, the court document said. Langford asked a passerby for a ride to the house she was staying at, which was later found to be Schuller's house. Security footage from a neighbor's home revealed that Langford was eventually dropped off at the residence about 6 p.m. The affidavit said footage then showed them leaving together in the truck about 30 minutes later. The truck returned to the residence at 11:36 p.m. According to court documents, the tire track pattern from the scene where the Langford was found matched the tire pattern on Schuller's truck. Separate footage from a Ring doorbell camera showed that Langford did not return with Schuller. The neighbor with the footage also told authorities that there was a 9 mm handgun in Schuller's house. Investigators obtained a search warrant and went through the home, finding rare ammunition that matched the spent shell at the scene and the aforementioned 9 mm handgun, according to the affidavit. On May 20, Washington County Circuit Judge Timothy Register accepted Schuller's plea and sentenced him to 45 years.
