TAYLOR Justice was 'terrified' when her 'healthy' daughter Madeline Tuckwiller woke up paralysed after a camping trip - all because of a tick.
"She couldn't walk and she was crawling on the floor," the 31-year-old mum said.

Madeline woke up from her family camping trip paralysed

Taylor, from West Virginia, US had taken her four kids on a short camping trip on Sunday May 11 to mark Mother's Day.
Five days later, Taylor noticed something was seriously wrong with her four-year-old daughter.
Madeline was struggling to move and appeared dazed, unable to get herself off the ground.
Taylor rushed her to hospital where medics began running a series of tests and scans but they couldn't figure out what was causing the paralysis.
She was then transferred to a specialist children's hospital three hours away, where her condition seemed to be getting worse.
'The paralysis affected her whole body,' Taylor said.
'It started from the bottom and was working its way up. She couldn't sit up and wasn't even making eye contact.'
Doctors monitored Madeline closely overnight. By the next morning, she had lost function in her hands.
It was only when a neurologist asked about the family's outdoor activities that he decided to examine her scalp.
They found a dime-sized female Rocky Mountain wood tick hidden in her hair, latched onto her skin and feeding.

It had been releasing a neurotoxin into Madeline's bloodstream, triggering a rare condition called tick paralysis.
The tick was carefully removed, and within hours, Madeline's mobility began to return.
'She was able to walk again about four hours later,' Taylor said. 'It was such a relief.'

The youngster was also given antibiotics to lower the risk of Lyme disease, which ticks can carry and which can cause long-term complications if not treated early.
Taylor, a salon owner, said she had never heard of tick paralysis before.
'It's frightening how something so small can do that kind of damage,' she said. 'I'll be so much more careful now.'

Madeline has started to recover but still wakes up with some stiffness in her legs in the mornings.
Thankfully, she's regained full movement during the day and is back to her usual self.
How to prevent tick bites - and remove the bugs
There are a few things you can do to lessen your likelihood of tick bites.
Firstly, try and cover as much of your skin as possible while walking outdoors and tuck your trousers into your socks.
You should also be using insect repellent containing DEET on your clothes and skin, and wearing light coloured clothing so you can spot a tick easily.
Also stick to paths where possible when you're out walking.
How can I remove a tick safely?
To remove a tick safely: Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool. You can buy these from some pharmacies, vets and pet shops.
Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
Slowly pull upwards, taking care not to squeeze or crush the tick. Dispose of it when you have removed it.
Clean the bite with antiseptic or soap and water.
The chance of getting ill is low. You do not need to do anything else unless you notice a rash or become unwell.
If either of these happen, make sure to see a GP so you can get treatment as soon a possible.
Taylor says the experience has changed the way she thinks about outdoor safety.
She now checks all her children thoroughly after time outside and keeps tick repellent in her bag at all times.
'Parents need to know about this,' she said.
'Check their heads, their hairlines, behind their ears, waistbands, even their socks.
"Ticks can hide anywhere and the earlier you catch it, the better.'

Declining fertility rates have been attributed to a combination of factors, including rising costs associated with raising children. But now accumulating evidence suggests parasitic infections could also be a threat. A study published in April this year showed for the first time "human sperm lose their heads upon direct contact" with a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. Toxoplasma gondii causes toxoplasmosis - an often harmless infection but can cause serious problems in individuals with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and newborns. The parasite is found in the faeces of infected cats and in undercooked meat. Writing for The Conversation, Bill Sullivan, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, Indiana University, said how the "new study bolsters emerging findings that underscore the importance of preventing this parasitic infection". Foodbourne transmission and animal to human transmission are the top ways people can get toxoplasmosis. Eating raw or undercooked meat, particularly lamb, pork, and venison, is a primary source of infection. And eating unwashed fruits and vegetables that have been contaminated with cat faeces or soil can also lead to infection. Cleaning cat litter boxes without proper hygiene can also expose people to the parasite. While toxoplasmosis is generally harmless for most people with healthy immune systems, often causing no symptoms or mild, flu-like symptoms that resolve on their own, Sullivan said toxoplasma remains in the body for life as dormant cysts in brain, heart and muscle tissue. And these cysts can reactive and cause additional episode of severe illness that damage critical organ system. He explains: "Between 30 per cent and 50 per cent of the world's population is permanently infected with toxoplasma due to the many ways the parasite can spread. "Upon infection, toxoplasma spreads to virtually every organ and skeletal muscle. Evidence that toxoplasma can also target human male reproductive organs first surfaced during the height of the AIDS pandemic in the 1980s, when some patients presented with the parasitic infection in their testes. 3 In a study published this year, sperm were found to be beheaded after coming into contact with the parasite Credit: Getty "While immunocompromised patients are most at risk for testicular toxoplasmosis, it can also occur in otherwise healthy individuals. "Imaging studies of infected mice confirm that toxoplasma parasites quickly travel to the testes in addition to the brain and eyes within days of infection." Evidence in past studies suggesting toxoplasma can reside in male reproductive organs has prompted analysis of fertility in infected men. In the April 2025 study, researchyers from Germany, Uraguay and Chile observed that toxoplasma can reach the testes and epididymis - the tube where sperm mature and are stored - two days after infection in mice. Looking at what happens when the parasite comes into direct contact with human sperm in a test tube, they observed that after only five minutes, 22.4 per cent of sperm cells were beheaded. The number of decapitated sperm also increased the longer they interacted with the parasites. Sperm cells that maintained their head were often twisted and misshapen, and sperm cells had hole sin their head, suggesting the parasites were trying to invade them as it would any other type of cell. Sullivan added: "The evidence that toxoplasma can infiltrate male reproductive organs in animals is compelling, but whether this produces health issues in people remains unclear. "Testicular toxoplasmosis shows that parasites can invade human testes, but symptomatic disease is very rare. "Studies to date that show defects in the sperm of infected men are too small to draw firm conclusions at this time. "Additionally, some reports suggest that rates of toxoplasmosis in high-income countries have not been increasing over the past few decades while male infertility was rising, so it's likely to only be one part of the puzzle."

France's health and family minister announced on Thursday that "where there are children, tobacco must disappear". Anyone who fails to follow the new rules could be faced with a £114 fine. The minister added that children have the "right to clean air". The ban, however, will not apply to cafe terraces or include electronic cigarettes.
