
The Art Of CEO Coaching: The Role, Soul And Context Of CEO Life

The CEO is a particular species. I have spent the past 20 years studying this species "in the wild" and coaching the best to be even better. It is a fascinating assignment, and I have learned much about what makes the CEO tick. It helps to have been one myself in a previous life. I empathize with the restlessness and the ambitious pursuit of challenging goals. I share the temptation to take responsibility and fix the problem.
So how do you best coach the CEO? What is different from coaching other leaders in the organization? Is it simply the same formula of 70% active listening and 30% asking powerful questions? In my experience, this challenge is best answered by considering the CEO's role, soul and context.
Unique to the role of the CEO is that the buck stops here. Many of the board leaders I have coached have eagerly stepped up to the CEO role and then confided to me quietly that "I never realized it would feel like this." There is a weight of responsibility that comes with the top job. As Shakespeare said in Henry IV, "Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown." The CEO crown is heavy and lonely. With it comes much privilege and also the occasional sleepless night.
That said, some thrive on the pressure. I worked with one managing director who visibly glowed in situations that would have destroyed a more gentle soul. They relished going "all in" to pitch themselves against daunting odds. I guess that's where the CEO needs to be brave. How do you coach for that? Well, you have to be brave, too. You have to know how to speak truth to power clearly yet respectfully.
As Ian Day and I said in our book Challenging Coaching, you need to be able to enter the ZOUD—the zone of uncomfortable debate. I was once asked by a budding CEO coach, "How do you get comfortable entering the Zone of Uncomfortable Debate?" "You don't," I replied. "That's why it's called the Zone of Uncomfortable Debate! It never gets comfortable and neither should it."
It sounds grand to talk about the soul of the CEO, but equally, it is necessary because the soul harbors our deepest desires and fears. Most CEOs desire recognition, respect and a sense of achievement. They fear the opposite—being ignored, ridiculed and ineffective. We could speculate on the childhood conditioning that creates such drivers, but CEOs will likely find such introspective, backward-looking musings of little interest relative to the excitement of creating a new world that accelerates them away from whatever they regret.
The CEO coach must mirror this restlessness by stretching the CEO's vision and being careful not to trigger the fear of the counselor's couch by indulging in too much therapeutic musing. Does this mean that the CEO coach is not psychologically adept and incapable of digging deep? Not at all. It is a matter of building trust and waiting for the invitation. When the invitation comes, it can be profound.
I'll never forget bending down to pack my bags at the end of the first coaching session with a new client who was a commercially focused corporate managing director and hearing him say, "... and there's one other goal I've not mentioned," to which I replied, "Oh yeah, and what's that then?" "I want to find God" was his deadpan reply. That was the start of a fascinating coaching journey.
Regardless of the CEO's role and soul, no leader can ignore the context in which they operate. The context of the CEO role is unique in several ways. Firstly, although the buck stops with the CEO, there is always a higher accountability to which they answer. That could be a PLC board, a board of trustees, a regulator or a politician, a private owner or a private equity backer. The CEO needs to develop a high-trust, mutually respectful relationship with their masters, and this can often require the diplomatic skills of a United Nations peacekeeper.
Many coaching sessions with CEOs will focus on the challenges of building these relationships and the CEO coach needs to be adept at helping the "big cheese" manage their ego and sometimes their temper. Alongside this personal relationship-building, the CEO is the chief evangelist for the organization as a whole and needs to be a proficient spokesperson inside and outside the organization.
Many CEOs I have coached did not think they had applied to be film stars but soon found themselves on the big stage of corporate life. In my experience, CEOs typically "fake it until they make it" with this aspect of their role, and the coach is required to provide feedback and best practices on the many ways to engage often skeptical and cynical audiences.
If all else fails, my best advice to CEOs, whether discussing their role, soul or context, is, "Remember, before you were a CEO, you were a human being." This comment always breaks the tension and gets a chuckle, but it is also a powerful truth. As we climb the ladder, imposter syndrome can increasingly kick in. The job starts to shape us rather than us shaping the job. We begin to appear inauthentic and wooden as we measure every word and second-guess every decision. The human being retreats amid the pressures of the role.
The CEO coach must also remember to stay human by not putting the CEO on a pedestal, not saying "yes" when the honest answer is "no" and by instinctively gauging when real help is either an arm around the shoulder or a poke in the ribs.

I quit my job after my first kid was born. It showed me just how much work parenting is.
At first, staying home with my child felt like I'd entered a career void. It allowed me to explore avenues and take risks I wouldn't have dared in a traditional work setting. I've learned that parenting is a job, too. I thought I'd return to work after the birth of my first son, but once he was born, the thought of leaving him felt like a sucker punch to the gut. When I announced I would stay home, my friend gave me a "Congratulations on Your Retirement" card. I was 24 at the time — hardly ready to retire. It was a tough decision to make For me, like many other new parents, the decision to leave the workforce was multifaceted. I didn't have family available to watch my infant, and other childcare options both made me uneasy and were expensive. Sending him to day care would have consumed 25% of my take-home income, which just didn't feel worth it when I wasn't totally comfortable with it in the first place. At first, being a full-time parent felt like falling into a career void. I started to dread the question, "What do you do for a living?" When I answered honestly, I often heard, "Well, that's an important job too." Well-meaning, yes. But it sometimes felt dismissive. After all, no one tells a doctor or lawyer their job is important — they just know. Staying home helped me discover and polish my interests Full-time motherhood allowed me to explore different parts of myself and take risks I wouldn't have considered if I'd remained in my old job. A fellow mom friend and I started a small business together. We plunged into marketing, product creation, manufacturing, and financial management, working from home as our children ran amok. It was the school of hard knocks. When we closed the business due to family obligations, I turned to writing. I wrote feverishly during naps and evenings. Over seven years, I drafted multiple novels, two of which are forthcoming with a small press under a pen name. I also acquired a literary agent and started a weekly writing critique group that still meets. I even ran a homeschool co-op from my home, teaching art history, science, and literature. This became my second education. One year, I condensed Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" into a digestible three-scene play that my students performed for their parents in the original language. I am grateful for those years I got to tap into my creative energy. I wouldn't have pursued any of it if I hadn't first stayed home with my firstborn. That's why I wish we'd stop calling full-time parenthood a "motherhood gap." It gave me life skills I wouldn't have gained elsewhere. I now need to work again, but I'm finding a balance Then my husband was laid off, and while I'd always helped out financially by taking side work, it was suddenly clear that I needed a steadier income. Thanks to my writing experience, I found my niche in freelance work. But working 30+ hours a week with three kids meant I often resorted to night and weekend hours. It was proof that being a stay-at-home parent was a full workload all along, even if it was paycheck-less. Researcher Suzanne Slaughter writes about how many working moms want better options, not just full-time or nothing. She suggests employers offer remote, flexible, part-time positions that let mothers stay in the workforce without burning out. Reading her words kindled a fire in me. I missed the slow mornings of cuddling my toddler before the weight of deadlines crept in. So, I've reduced my hours, trying to find a rhythm that works better for our family. It's not perfect. I still get distracted or feel pulled in too many directions. But I try to pause for long stretches to cook them a good meal, take a family walk, or read a book. I want to be more present because I know that my presence is everything — for them and for myself. Although I love freelance writing, I will always value my first job more — parenthood — a job I will, thankfully, never retire from.

Apple Design Award 2025 winners announced — apps and games recognized for innovation and ingenuity
Apple got a head start on WWDC 2025 by announcing the winners of its annual Apple Design Awards today (June 3), as it looks to highlight some of best apps and games available in its App Store. This year's edition features 12 winners picked by the App Store's editorial team, curated from a list of 36 finalists. The categories have changed over the years, but the 2025 iteration has the same categories as last year minus the spatial computing category for Apple Vision Pro apps. Returning categories include Delight and Fun, Inclusivity, Innovation, Interaction, Social Impact, Visuals and Graphics. Each category sees two winners — an app and a game, so the six categories result in 12 awards. The winners aren't defined by downloads or revenue but by a commitment to innovation and ingenuity, Apple says. The 2025 winners will be recognized during WWDC 2025, which starts next Monday (June 9). Here's the full list of winners, as well as a selection of our favorites we recommend you check out. Balatro took the gaming world by storm last year. It was even one of our picks for the best video games of 2024. If you haven't played, the game fuses poker, solitaire and deck building where you combine joker cards with abilities to score points. Don't let the poker scare you, the twists on the rules make it a familiar-but-fresh take on the card game. It's "one more round" on your iPhone or iPad. Honorable Mention: CapWords turns images of objects into stickers to help you learn new languages. If you're practicing a new language this could be a fun way to change things up. Play is an app designed to help you create iPhone apps by letting you build prototypes in the Apple SwiftUI code. It was chosen for its intuitive interface to help app makers of all levels of experience collaborate and design. It can be synced between your Mac and your iPhone so you can move between devices as needed. Honorable Mention: PBJ — The Musical is an interactive music game based on Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. It features handcrafted paper figures and voice acting. It's clever and artistic. Dredge is an existential slow-burn horror game that has been available on other platforms for awhile. In fact, it was one of our favorite games that you might have missed in 2023. It only just got an excellent mobile port last year. In the game, you play as a contract fisherman who catches normal fish by day for a remote island settlement, but by night the horrors of the deep fill your nets. It's a haunting mystery with an eerie world to explore. And don't worry, it's not a gory or overly tense horror game, more disquieting. Honorable Mention: Taobao is a shopping experience app design for the Vision Pro that lets you compare 3D models of products side by side. Art of Fauna is a cozy, beautiful, illustrated puzzle game where you solve puzzles by moving around visual elements or texts. The puzzles are coupled with descriptions of the animals they depict. You can solve either the image or the text. It also promotes animal conservation and inclusivity. Honorable Mention: Speechify is an app that reads text and turns it into audio. The app is meant to help people with dyslexia, ADHD and low vision, or for those who learn better by listening. During the devastating California wildfires at the start of the year, the Watch Duty app was indispensable for tracking what was happening with the Palisades and Eaton fires as they spread through those Los Angeles neighborhoods. Through user and agency reports, the app shows fire perimeters and progress and evacuation orders. Plus, it's free and subsists on donations. Honorable Mention: Neva is absolutely gorgeous 2D platformer where a girl and her wolf, Neva, travel the world and fight against corrupted seasons. It's heartbreaking and beautiful and you should play it. On one level, Feather is meant for designers and artists. At the same time, it's a delightful app that takes 2D images and renders them in 3D. It's meant for people of all skills and enables you to create 3D models on the iPad using touch or the Apple Pencil features to create images. You don't need to have an image to start as you can create things from scratch in the app as well. Honorable Mention: Infinity Nikki is a cozy open-world game that continues the Nikki series which focuses magical outfits. Combat in the game is based on style duels and not physical.

Shakespeare North seeks naming partner for funding
Shakespeare North Playhouse says it is looking for a naming rights partner in what is believed to be the first deal of its kind for a regional theatre in the UK. The venue, a replica Shakespearean theatre that opened in Prescot, Merseyside, in 2022, said it wanted a deal similar to those for many sport grounds to "support the theatre's ambitions over the next decade". It said the partnership could "exceed £300,000 annually" against a "challenging" financial backdrop, after an 18% fall in core funding nationally. The theatre's chief executive Lisa Allen told BBC Radio Merseyside there was no risk of the theatre closing down "but I would say that we are very reliant on Knowsley Council". "I would like us to be less so - so we should find alternative funding streams," she added. Ms Allen said that in her 30-year career in the arts, Knowsley Council had "been the most supportive council I have ever worked with". "It would be nice to not have to rely on them for as much support because Knowsley is the second-most deprived area in the country." Prominent actors such as Sue Johnston, Ricky Tomlinson and Stephen Graham have appeared at the theatre, which cost £38m to build and has hosted more than 300,000 visitors - 10% of whom had never visited a theatre before, the venue has said. The venue received £10.5m during its development from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, with mayor Steve Rotheram recently saying: "In a short space of time, it's made an incredible impact on the local community and it's my hope that it will continue to inspire, educate, and bring people together for generations to come." Ms Allen said they hoped to confirm a naming partner in 2026 in what theatre publication The Stage called "a significant shift in arts funding". Prescot is believed to have been the site of the only purpose-built Elizabethan theatre outside London, which is thought to have existed in the 1590s. The original theatre hosted performances of works by William Shakespeare and was made possible by the Earl of Derby, who lived at Knowsley Hall. Knowsley Council leader Graham Morgan said he wanted residents to benefit from "access to culture and the arts". He called the potential naming rights deal a "really innovative project and something that in time we think could also help to support the future of other regional theatres too – which can only be a good thing".
