Prolific board games shoplifter avoids jail
A man who stole £3,000 worth of board games has been spared jail.
Paul Mangal, 58, of Haringey, north London, was given a suspended prison sentence after he admitted stealing family favourites including Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble and Pictionary.
He repeatedly targeted a Waterstone's shop in Crouch End since April 2023, before finally being caught in February this year, the Metropolitan Police said.
Mangal was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court.
He was also been banned from being in possession of a suitcase in two areas of Crouch End and Hornsey.
The Met said officers had worked with the bookstore throughout January, collecting CCTV to identify Mangal.
Then on 23 February, he entered the shop again and made off with several items in a suitcase.
Mangal, of Hornsey Rise Gardens, was arrested near his home and the next day pleaded guilty to 23 charges of theft.
Sgt James Elliot said: "Through building strong relationships with staff at this branch of Waterstones, we were able to identify Mangal by assessing his patterns of offending, which appeared to ramp up before, during and immediately after Christmas, then almost daily up until his arrest."

Officials did not disclose any details about his death at the time. A report from the medical examiner obtained by The Post on Wednesday revealed Grell died of natural causes. Advertisement Grell's death generated online speculation over whether it was a result of a revenge killing by another inmate, given the horrifying nature of his crime. That speculation came as legislators were calling for sweeping reforms at the Arizona Department of Corrections after three inmates were savagely murdered 15 days before in the same prison complex where Grell died. The three prisoners were killed on April 4 by Ricky Wassenaar, a notorious convict who is serving 16 life sentences for murder and his role in one of the longest prison hostage situations in American history, according to prison officials. 5 Grell was serving a life sentence for killing his 2-year-old daughter over two decades ago. 'This 50-year-old male inmate at the Arizona State Prison Complex – Tucson…was discovered unresponsive in his bed in the Rincon Unit,' the report read. 'He was pronounced deceased at the scene by an attending physician.' Grell's thin body was delivered to the medical examiner in a white body bag. He weighed just 134 pounds and had bad teeth, according to the report. Grell was serving a life sentence for murdering his daughter over 25 years ago. He picked up Kristen Salem from a Mesa day care on Dec. 2, 1999, and took her to McDonald's for lunch, according to court records. 5 The medical examiner's report put to rest online speculation that another inmate killed Grell. He told the tot they were going to see Christmas lights, reported, but instead he drove to Target to buy a plastic gas can and gasoline, according to court documents. He then drove to the desert outside Mesa, laid his sleeping daughter on the ground, doused her in gasoline and lit her on fire, the records said. Little Kristen woke up and staggered 10 feet while engulfed in flames, before collapsing on the ground. Advertisement He later confessed to the killing at a press conference early the next morning. 'I took the gasoline and I poured it on her,' he told investigators during a videotaped interview. 'I took the match and threw it on her,' he added with no trace of emotion in his voice.

‘Grinch' who allegedly stole, prowled cars on Christmas in Camas arrested
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Months after a person was caught on camera stealing a car and prowling other vehicles last Christmas, Camas police announced on Wednesday that they have made an arrest in the case. Twenty-three-year-old Jorge Ayala was charged with auto theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, nine counts of vehicle prowl and third-degree theft. According to police, the crimes occurred between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Christmas morning 2024 when a dark gray Mazda CX3 with Washington license plate BSD5166 was stolen by a 'Grinch' from the Woodburn Neighborhood then used to drive around the area to prowl other vehicles. Watch: Bridgerton actress fights off Algerian phone thief
Credit: Metropolitan Police Footage has revealed the moment a Bridgerton actress fought off a prolific Algerian criminal who tried to steal her phone. Genevieve Chenneour turned to see Zacariah Boulares grab her device from the table behind her as she waited for her order at a Joe & The Juice coffee shop in Kensington, west London. The 27-year-old immediately put her hands up to block his exit with the help of another customer. As the other customer held Boulares down, Ms Chenneour grabbed her dropped phone from the floor and used it to hit him in the back. She was left with concussion after Boulares retaliated, hitting and kicking the other customer who helped during the incident in February. Chenneour, who played Clara Livingston in the third season of the Netflix period drama, has thanked her fans for their support since the attack. Posting on Instagram, she wrote: 'I'm okay and incredibly grateful he won't be able to harm anyone else. I am, however, finding it difficult to feel safe going out – especially after being repeatedly threatened with being stabbed in the face.' Boulares, who has 12 previous convictions relating to 28 offences, admitted stealing her phone and assaulting another customer when he appeared at Westminster magistrates' court last week. The 18-year-old, who is an Algerian national, previously threatened to cut off Aled Jones's arm with a machete unless he handed over his £17,000 Rolex watch. He then threatened to behead the BBC Songs of Praise presenter if he continued to follow him after the robbery in July 2023. Boulares had also previously stolen a Rolex worth £20,000 from a 78-year-old man at Paddington station in west London. He was put in youth detention as a result, but released after 14 months of his 24-month sentence. In addition to the phone theft and assault, Boulares pleaded guilty to another theft after he stole a black leather bag from a customer at a pizza restaurant.
