Dylan Edwards' truth bomb for Raiders as NRL boss responds to Vegas incident
Dylan Edwards' reaction to the Las Vegas drama that has landed two Canberra stars in hot water speaks volumes about the professionalism of Ivan Cleary's four-time reigning premiers and the Penrith fullback in particular. And it shines another glaring spotlight on his rivals at Canberra. Hudson Young and Morgan Smithies have both made public apologies after a late-night hotel scuffle in Vegas last weekend that created the very unwanted headlines that league officials were hoping to avoid.
The Raiders players are best mates and their girlfriends have been travelling around the United States together. But they reportedly came to blows after a late-night drinking session, following a computer system mix-up at the Vegas resort the team was staying at, which left one of the players without a room and the other unwilling to share his bed.
A scuffle ensued in the hotel elevator and the pair were briefly ejected from the building after hotel security became concerned about an inflatable baseball bat one of the players was seen carrying on CCTV footage. Young and Smithies were later allowed to return to the hotel when club officials were informed and the situation was cleared up after 2am local time.
Speaking about the embarrassing saga on Tuesday before flying out to America, NRL CEO Andrew Abdo reminded the players about their responsibilities while representing the sport on the international stage. 'NRL players are professionals and know they are expected to conduct themselves appropriately at all times,' Abdo told News Corp. 'We expect exceptional standards from our athletes on and off the field.'

The Panthers also became unwittingly caught up in the drama when hotel staff knocked on one of their players' doors by accident. Penrith's premiership-winning squad is also staying in the Resorts World precinct in Las Vegas but neither Panthers prop Moses Leota or fullback Edwards were among those awoken during the disturbance.
And Edwards' response about the drama after being quizzed by reporters in Vegas speaks volumes about his professionalism, compared to the two Canberra players. 'It wasn't my door. I was sound (asleep) by then," Edwards said. "That is something for Canberra to deal with. Apparently they have dealt with it well. It is a bit of a personal onus on how you want to represent yourself and represent the club. We have a great bunch of boys there who just like enjoying each other'c company and being round each other. You just have to behave I suppose.'
Stuart and the Raiders have every right to feel let down by Young and Smithies, who are both international Test stars with Australia and Great Britain, respectively. Both players should know better and serious questions are justifiably being asked about why they were out drinking late ahead of the first game of the new season.

It's understood NRL officials will review security footage of the hotel scuffle to determine what sanctions Young and Smithies could be facing. And the Raiders could also hit them with disciplinary measures when they return to Australia, after stopping short of standing the pair down from the Vegas game. Canberra CEO Don Furner told he was disappointed in his players after phoning the NRL CEO from Los Angeles to initially inform him about the incident.
Furner said the club didn't consider sending the players home, but made it clear to Raiders coach Stuart that the duo needed to front up to media and own their mistake. 'It's very disappointing,' Furner told News Corp. 'I just said to Rick (Stuart) that the players should front the media. That's why we did it. Make them own their mistake rather than leave it to the club to face the music.'
The Raiders take on the New Zealand Warriors in the first of the two NRL games at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday (Sunday March 2, AEDT). That opening game of the new NRL season will be followed by Cronulla's clash with four-time defending premiers, Penrith, later in the day.

League great slams NRL as Benji Marshall spray lands Tigers coach in hot water
League great Greg Alexander has leapt to the defence of Benji Marshall after the Wests Tigers coach's criticism of officials looks set to land him in hot water with the NRL. Marshall blew up over two controversial calls against Jarome Luai during Sunday's loss to Penrith, with the penalty for a late tackle on Panthers kicker Blaize Talagi particularly baffling. Luai was also pinged for an escort penalty during the second half of the 18-14 defeat that Marshall thought the officials also got wrong. But the NRL's head of football Graham Annesley insisted on Tuesday that both incidents were reviewed and the right calls were made. 'It's clear from the vision that Jarome Luai props on his left foot and turns his back to initiate contact with Liam Martin,' Annesley said about the escort penalty. 'Regarding the contact on kicker Blaize Talagi, the rules are very clear, and have been reinforced with clubs on multiple occasions over recent seasons. "Players have a duty of care to avoid dangerous contact with kickers who are in the process of kicking and in a vulnerable position. This is a player safety policy which has been in place for a number of years.' But a frustrated Alexander wasn't having a bar of that explanation and echoed the fan backlash by insisting that Luai made the tackle on Talagi as he was kicking the footy. Luai's shot was not late, high or dangerous and the former premiership winner lamented the fact that current rules tend to penalise defenders for what has long been celebrated as exemplary kick pressure. "The tackle wasn't late, it wasn't high. He was within his rights to make that tackle," Alexander said about the penalty against Luai. "Please tell me that we haven't ruled that out of the game. "Do we just allow a kicker to take all the time in the world to kick the ball? As long as he hasn't made contact with the legs of the kicker - which he didn't - then I think it's gotta be alright. Veteran NRL commentator Andrew Voss agreed it did not warrant a penalty. "If he was passing the ball, then there's no dramas," he added. With the scores locked at 10-10 at the time, the decision proved costly as Nathan Cleary's ensuing penalty goal put the defending premiers up by two, before Thomas Jenkins completed his hat-trick late on to help get Penrith home. Marshall was clearly infuriated in his post-match press conference and suggested the officials decided the outcome, in comments that look to have landed him in hot water. 'The game is so hard and demanding. And I actually feel sorry for our players because they didn't actually get to decide tonight," the Wests Tigers coach said. RELATED: 'Cringey' Galvin promo infuriates fans as Raiders hero cops huge snub Slater under fire for Ezra Mam move as QLD axe skipper DCE 'It was a wrong call. I agree with protecting the kickers, but he didn't take his legs out. They didn't put him in a dangerous position. It was simultaneous when he kicked it and he made contact there. Like, that's not a penalty. "And I thought it actually cost us because we're in a cycle there where they got field position, kicked the goal, got the ball back, went down, got a penalty and then scored, so anyway, I've had my rant.' And it could prove costly for Marshall and the Tigers, with CODE Sports reporting that the NRL is reviewing the comments to determine whether any form of sanction will be handed down. That's two horrible calls by officials this week when it's come to putting pressure on the kicker. Raiders Named Landing Spot for Recently Released All-Pro Defender
Raiders Named Landing Spot for Recently Released All-Pro Defender originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders welcomed in a new leadership tandem of Pete Carroll and John Spytek ahead of the 2025 NFL season. With two competent people now in place, the team can begin rebuilding their roster the right way. Advertisement That started this offseason with the overhauling of the team's defense, particularly the linebacker and cornerback positions. Now gone were Robert Spillane, Divine Deablo, Nate Hobbs and Jack Jones, all of whom were starters the last two seasons. In came Elandon Roberts, Devin White, Jaylon Smith and Eric Stokes from the free agent market, as well as a handful of drafted prospects, to replace them. Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander (23).David Banks-Imagn Images Many have questioned the talent and depth of the Raiders' roster, with the cornerback room in particular coming under fire. On Monday, the Green Bay Packers may have given them an opportunity to remedy this with the release of Jaire Alexander. Advertisement According to Pro Football Focus' Trevor Sikkema, Las Vegas is among the teams who could land Alexander now that he is a free agent. "Now that Pete Carroll is the head coach in Las Vegas, don't count the Raiders out of the Alexander sweepstakes," Sikkema wrote. "Carroll knows how to build an elite secondary, as evidenced by the Legion of Boom during his time in Seattle. He is also known as a player's coach and someone who can handle big-personality players." Alexander has been a Second-Team All-Pro honoree twice in his career, as well as a Pro Bowler in two different seasons. Unfortunately, he has struggled with injuries throughout his tenure in the NFL. Only one time has Alexander played every game in a season, and that was all the way back in 2019. He has played in seven games or less in three of the last four years, including just 14 total in his last two campaigns. Advertisement Las Vegas is returning cornerback Jakorian Bennett, who had eight passes defended in just 10 games last year, as well as 2024 fourth-round pick Decamerion Richardson, who showed flashes last season. However, the additions of 2025 third-rounder Darien Porter and four-year veteran Eric Stokes may not immediately offset the losses of Hobbs and Jones, so the Raiders could use some experience at cornerback. Alexander could provide just that if he can stay healthy and is willing to restructure his $18.2 million price tag. Former Raiders First-Round Draft Bust Lands Texans Workout
Former Raiders First-Round Draft Bust Lands Texans Workout originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders have endured their share of failures in the NFL Draft over the last few decades. While bashing the team for the selections of JaMarcus Russell and Henry Ruggs III feels like low-hanging fruit, these two picks are just the beginning of the team's struggles. Advertisement 2020 first-round pick Damon Arnette was an utter disaster for the Silver and Black, both on and off the field. He lasted just under two seasons with the franchise after posting a Pro Football Focus grade of 32.9 in his second year. He only played in 13 total games for the Raiders and recorded just 29 tackles, three passes defended and zero interceptions (via Pro Football Reference). Former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Damon Arnette (20).Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Arnette has enjoyed a bit of a resurgence playing in the UFL this spring, however. He has starred for the Houston Roughnecks, recording 18 tackles, five pass break-ups, 1.0 sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown. Advertisement On Monday, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson announced that Arnette landed a workout with the Houston Texans. The Texans already have two great young corners in 2024 First-Team All-Pro Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter, who had three interceptions and 10 pass break-ups last season. However, Houston chose to take a flyer on Arnette, who was the No. 19 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Arnette had five interceptions and 22 passes defended during his four-year career at Ohio State. When Arnette was picked by the Raiders, Jon Gruden was still the team's head coach and Mike Mayock was the general manager. Just five years later, the team is on its fourth general manager and head coach since Arnette's selection.
