
UAE reaffirms support for Palestinian cause at Istanbul summit
The speaker of the UAE's Federal National Council has reaffirmed the UAE's unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.
Speaking at a parliamentary meeting in Istanbul, Saqr Ghobash stressed that lasting stability in the region depends on a two-state solution, with an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital.
He expressed the UAE's strong solidarity with the Palestinian people, especially those in Gaza, condemning the ongoing violence, displacement and suffering.
Ghobash led the UAE's delegation to the first meeting of the Parliamentary Group in Solidarity with Palestine, held in Istanbul under the patronage of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and attended by 12 heads of parliament.

At least seven Palestinians killed in air strike in designated 'safe zone'
At least seven Palestinian civilians have been killed and several others injured on Monday when an Israeli drone strike targeted a tent sheltering displaced people west of Khan Younis, according to a report by Wafa news agency. The tent was in the Al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis, which has been designated as a "safe zone" for Palestinians displaced by Israel. Al-Mawasi is a 10-mile strip of farmland that stretches along the Mediterranean coast, with dunes and a beach close to the sea. It was first designated as a 'safe zone' by the Israeli military in early December. Wafa also reported that Israeli attacks have killed at least 51 Palestinians on Monday.

Leader of left-leaning French party says country must recognise Palestinian state
The leader of the left-leaning Le France Insoumise party, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, said the siege on Gaza must be lifted, reported Al Jazeera Arabic on Monday. Melenchon also said France must immediately recognise a Palestinian state to thwart Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu's war on Gaza. He added that the French government allows Netanyahu to do whatever he wants, and he [Melenchin] refuses to bow down to him. He also said that Israel had committed piracy on Monday morning in international waters by detaining everybody on board a ship carrying humanitarian aid. He commended the bravery of the crew on board, which includes climate and political activist Greta Thunberg and a member of the European Parliament, Rima Hassan.
