Report: Knicks to interview Mike Brown, Taylor Jenkins for coaching vacancy

Reutersa day ago

June 14 - The New York Knicks plan to interview two head coaches who were fired during the 2024-25 season as they continue to seek a replacement for dismissed coach Tom Thibodeau, ESPN reported Saturday.
Set to chat with the Knicks are former Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown and Taylor Jenkins, who coached the Memphis Grizzlies, per the report.
The Knicks have been turned aside in their efforts to talk with current NBA head coaches, with their teams not granting permission. The list includes Jason Kidd (Dallas Mavericks), Chris Finch (Minnesota Timberwolves), Ime Udoka (Houston Rockets) and Quin Snyder (Atlanta Hawks).
The Knicks fired Thibodeau last week after the team lost to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals -- the first time they'd advanced to that round in 25 years.
Brown, 55, was fired 31 games into his third season in Sacramento, where he posted a 107-88 overall record. He previously was the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers (2005-10, 2013-14) and Los Angeles Lakers (2011-12) and has a career record of 454-304 in the regular season.
His teams are 50-40 in the postseason, and Brown took the LeBron James-led Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in the 2006-07 season. Cleveland was swept by the San Antonio Spurs.
He's been named NBA Coach of the Year twice, first with Cleveland following the 2008-09 season and then with Sacramento in 2022-23, when he led the Kings to their first postseason in 16 seasons.
The Grizzlies fired Jenkins, 40, in March with nine games left in the regular season and a 44-29 record. At the time he was ousted. the Grizzlies were tied for fourth place in the standings in the Western Conference. They ended the season 3-6 and fell to the play-in round, capturing the No. 8 seed.
They were swept by the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in the play-in round.
Jenkins had a 250-214 record in nearly six full seasons with the Grizzlies. They qualified for the playoffs three times and were 9-14, winning just one series.

Auckland City shut down Kane .. and concede 10 against Bayern at Club World Cup

The good news for Auckland City was that they stopped Harry Kane scoring on Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati. The bad news was that his Bayern Munich teammates were a little more prolific, scoring 10 between them in the opening match of their Club World Cup campaign. If Fifa president Gianni Infantino was hoping his expanded Club World Cup – now containing 32 teams, playing across four weeks in 11 US cities – would showcase the depth of talent in global football, this was not a good example. The statistics were excruciating: the German champions had 31 shots – 17 of them on target – to Auckland's one, and enjoyed 72% of possession. It took 52 years for a team to score 10 goals in a Fifa World Cup game – Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 in 1982 – it's taken just two games for a team to score 10 under the Club World Cup's new format (the largest previous win at the tournament was 6-1, when Al-Hilal beat Al-Jazira in 2021 when just seven teams took part). Sign up to Soccer with Jonathan Wilson Jonathan Wilson brings expert analysis on the biggest stories from European soccer after newsletter promotion There is some mitigation: while many argue that talent has been diluted by expanding the number of teams at this tournament, Auckland City have been a feature of the Club World Cup for some time: they have actually played at more editions than any other team. On the other hand, they're not even the best team in Auckland, let alone New Zealand. Auckland City are part-timers, and the city's professional team, Auckland FC, play in Australia's A-League. Jamal Musiala led the way for Bayern on Sunday, with a second-half hat-trick. Thomas Müller, Michael Olise and Kingsley Coman scored two each, with Sacha Boey completing the rout. Things won't get much easier for Auckland: they play another European giant, Benfica, on Friday. Bayern play Argentina's Boca Juniors on the same day, in what will be a tougher assignment than their opening fixture.

National anthem singer launches incendiary ICE protest at Dodgers game... before it all ends in tears

Singer Nezza has revealed she sang the national anthem at the Dodgers game in LA on Saturday night in Spanish in solidarity to ICE protestors in the city - despite the team trying to stop her. In a tearful post on TikTok, Nezza revealed the Dodgers told her to sing the anthem in English, but she went against the wishes of the team. In a separate video, she shared a clip of what she says was a Dodgers official off camera telling her to sing the anthem in English. 'We are going to do the song in English today,' the woman can be heard saying in the footage, to which Nezza looks visibly surprised. The clip goes on to show her defying the requst. 'Watch the Dodgers tell me I can't sing the Spanish Star-Spangled Banner that Roosevelt literally comissioned in 1945,' she captioned the post. 'So I did it anyway,' she added as an extra caption when the video shows her singing. The 30-year-old, who wore a Dominican Republic jersey for her performance, then shared an emotional second post explaining her version of events from the start of the game. 'I didn't think I'd be met with any sort of no,' Nezza - real name Vanessa Hernandez - said on her TikTok in a post late on Saturday night. 'I just felt like I needed to do it. I'm still very shaken up and emotional. Especially because we're in L.A., and with everything happening. I've sang the national anthem many times in my life, but today, out of all days, I could not. I'm sorry. 'I could not believe when she walkied in and told me no. For anyone who has been following me for a while, you will know everything I do is out of love. 'I am proud of myself for doing that today because my parents are immigrants. I just can't imagine them being ripped away from me, even at this age. Let alone little kids, what are we doing? 'Anyways, thank you for all the messages. I love you guys so much. Safe to say I am never allowed in that stadium again.' The Dodgers have been contacted for comment. According to The Athletic, she was not punished for ignoring the team request and is not banned from Dodger Stadium in the future. Protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement crackdowns have been rife across Los Angeles over that last week. The Dodgers, who visitied Donald Trump in the White House recently as World Series champions, have not commented about the scenes. 'Honestly, I don't know enough, to be quite honest with you,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'I know that when you're having to bring people in and deport people, all the unrest, it's certainly unsettling for everyone. But I haven't dug enough and can't speak intelligently on it.' Dodgers player Kike Hernandez adressed the situation on Instagram on Saturday, saying: 'I may not be Born & Raised, but this city adopted me as one of their own. 'I am saddened and infuriated by what's happening in our country and our city. Los Angeles and Dodger fans have welcomed me, supported me and shown me nothing but kindness and love.' Hernandez, who was born in Puerto Rico, added: 'This is my second home. And I cannot stand to see our community being violated, profiled, abused and ripped apart. ALL people deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and human rights. #CityOfImmigrants.'
