Bartlett Lake jet skier and MCSO patrol boat collide, sheriff's office says

A man, 18, was on a jetski when he and a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office patrol boat collided on Bartlett Lake on Memorial Day.
The sheriff's office says the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the deputy driving the boat was not hurt.
MCSO says there's no indication of impairment being a factor in this crash.
MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says one of its patrol boats and a jet ski were involved in a crash on Bartlett Lake on Memorial Day.
What we know
The crash happened around 3:15 p.m. on May 26 when deputies attempted to stop someone for a wake zone violation.
"While attempting to conduct a stop for a wake zone violation, our deputy approached the jet ski. As the patrol boat neared, the operator of the jet ski made a sudden right turn into the path of the patrol vessel. Despite immediate evasive efforts by the deputy, a collision could not be avoided," the sheriff's office said on May 27.The 18-year-old man on the jet ski was hit and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
"Our deputy, a 32-year veteran with more than a decade of experience on Lake Patrol, was not injured. At this time, there is no indication that impairment was a factor in the incident," MCSO said.
The crash remains under investigation, and MCSO says its level II boat incident reconstruction team will conduct a thorough and objective review.
"Our thoughts are with the young man involved and his family as he recovers, and we remain committed to transparency and accountability throughout the investigative process," MCSO said.

Jefferson County theft and burglary suspect climbs 80 feet up tree to evade capture
A man wanted in two separate theft and burglary cases in Thurston County was arrested on Memorial Day, but not before hiding in a tree 80 feet above the ground for eight hours. Deputies found the man's vehicle concealed in a wooded area near Mill Road in Port Townsend and called for backup. Before that could arrive, the man ran off toward Caswell Brown Village. Using a drone, deputies tracked the suspect as he climbed approximately 80 feet up a large cedar tree in an attempt to evade capture. Deputy Ash Moore and Port Townsend Police Officer Fudally led a lengthy negotiation effort as the man repeatedly threatened to harm himself and refused to come down. After nearly eight hours of communication, they successfully persuaded him to descend safely. Port Angeles PD, Port Townsend PD, Sequim PD, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Washington State Patrol, East Jefferson Fire Rescue, and Believe in Recovery all responded to the incident to assist. The suspect was evaluated by medics on scene and transported to Jefferson Healthcare as a precaution.

Procession across central Ohio honors Morrow County deputy killed while responding to call
Hundreds took part in a procession Wednesday to honor fallen Morrow County Sheriff's Office deputy Daniel Sherrer, who was killed Memorial Day while responding to a domestic violence call in Marengo. The May 28 procession will bring Sherrer's body from Montgomery County to Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Gilead. It traveled east through Columbus on Interstate 270 and is moving north on Interstate 71. At a press conference May 27, Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton remembered Sherrer as a cheerful, friendly man who "always had a smile on his face." Sherrer was 31. Sherrer responded Memorial Day evening to a report of gunshots from a home in the 100 block of County Road 26 (Olive Green Marengo Fulton Road) at the intersection with County Road 15 (West Liberty-Mount Vernon Road), south of Marengo, according to the sheriff's office. There he encountered Brian Michael Wilson, 53, who has been charged with aggravated murder in his death, according to court records. Wilson threatened Sherrer several times before the two exchanged gunfire, killing Sherrer and injuring Wilson, according to an arrest affidavit. Wilson was transported to a local hospital after the shooting, and an initial court date in his case hasn't been set. Wilson had a history of domestic violence and firearm convictions from 1994 to 2009 when he lived in Marion and had been barred from owning firearms. He used two handguns to shoot Sherrer, according to an account of the shooting contained in a police affidavit.
