'Botched' restoration to church Virgin Mary statue sparks protests
The restoration of an iconic 17th century statue of the Virgin Mary has sparked huge protests in Seville after worshippers said her makeover left her looking like she had undergone plastic surgery. The Virgin of La Macarena is one of Spain 's most famed Catholic effigies, and many Spaniards travel south every year to catch a glimpse of the wooden figure during the city's Holy Week parades. So when the Brotherhood of the Macarena unveiled the surprise restoration over the weekend, her devotees were outraged, with critics saying she had been disfigured.
BEFORE RESTORATION
According to her worshippers, her face was given a glossier finish, while her eye lashes were made longer, which they say altered her gaze. 'Her facial expression has completely changed,' one outraged worshipper told Spanish newspaper El Pais. 'It pains me deeply to say it, but she looks like a poor copy of the original.' Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Basilica de la Macarena on Monday calling for the resignation of the brotherhood's leader.
BEFORE RESTORATION
AFTER RESTORATION
The brotherhood issued an apology and closed the basilica over the weekend, and the Virgin has since emerged with shortened eyelashes after efforts to correct an 'undesired effect.' The religious icon's controversial makeover has been likened to the botched art restoration of a painting of Jesus Christ, which resulted in the painting being dubbed: 'Monkey Christ'. In 2012, Cecilia Giménez, 82, decided to touch up the 'Ecce Homo' (Behold The Man) fresco in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy church in Borja, northern Spain.
AFTER RESTORATION
However, her brushwork completely obliterated the face of Jesus transforming the painting into what locals described as more like a hedgehog or hairy monkey rather than Jesus. It also comes after a Polish village was outraged earlier this year after a botched renovation of a 1820 shrine of Jesus and the Virgin Mary left the Blessed Mother looking like a 'Simpsons' cartoon character. Once described by experts as 'tall and slender', the Virgin Mary statue just outside the village of Stuszionka now has oversized mitten-like hands, exaggerated eyes and a crooked frown accentuated by bright red lipstick.
The figure of Jesus, meanwhile, appears to be wearing grey underpants, and both figures have been repainted with an unnatural yellow hue. Posting a photo on Facebook, the Conservator of Monuments said: 'A rather rare depiction of the Virgin Mary looking upwards. 'Another example of good intentions... Let's hope that in the near future this valuable object will receive professional conservation, because it deserves it very much.'
It added that the unknown restorer had also painted over the shrine's original German inscription, replacing it with the markings 'VII 2024, JC 2,' written in what appears to be a black marker pen. Locals vented their fury with the botch job, with some describing it as 'desecration'. Posting on social media, one outraged viewer said: 'The times of the greatest barbarity and ignorance of Spirit and Reason have come.' Another commented: 'I would take a risk and notify the prosecutor's office about offending religious feelings. Because this is nothing more than an example of desecrating an object of religious worship.' 'It looks more like Bart Simpson than The Mother Mary,' said another.

Romeo Beckham's ex Kim Turnbull flaunts her jaw-dropping figure in skimpy swimwear in behind-the-scenes snaps from her racy Agent Provocateur campaign after hitting back at rumours she dated Brooklyn
Romeo Beckham's ex Kim Turnbull has continued to show off her enviable figure, as she shared a slew of behind-the-scenes snaps from her jaw-dropping Agent Provocateur campaign. The model, 24, starred in the brand's Spring/Summer 2025 and Forever Collection Swim Campaign, on Monday, with a sizzling photoshoot of her sporting an array of skimpy swimwear. And on Tuesday she took to her Instagram to give fans a glimpse at the process of shooting the racy advert, and reveal even more daring shots. One snap saw Kim sitting in her makeup chair in a tiny black string bikini that displayed her svelte waist and toned legs. While she could also be seen having her bronzed glow touched up by makeup artists and accentuating her ample cleavage in a shiny leopard print two-piece. Photos also showed Kim's wardrobe laid out, with a personalised robe with her name emblazoned on the back, and she tucked into a strawberry in another shot, while clad in a matching red bikini. Among the daring snapshots of her posing up a storm against the sun-soaked backdrop of Ibiza in a daring cut-out swimsuit, were glimpses of the DJ laughing and joking around on set. In contrast to the revealing campaign snaps, one picture saw Kim covered up entirely by a fluffy white towel wrapped around her head, while she celebrated with a glass of wine. Captioning the post, the stunner admitted that working with Agent Provocateur was a dream come true, as she revealed her personal connection to the brand. She wrote: 'KT X AP BTS. AP has been one of my favourite brands since I can remember (literally been stealing bikinis off my mums friends since I was 13) so shooting this in my favourite place is a full circle moment!! 'Grateful for the chance to collaborate with a team that truly celebrates & empowers women. Thank you to the literal dreamm team! AP girl for life'. Creative Director Sarah Shotton previously explained why Kim was the natural choice for the Agent Provocateur campaign. She said: 'Kim captures everything we love about. Summer, magnetic, inviting, and totally at ease in her skin. She brings a realness to our swimwear that's confident, cool, yet captivating.' Her post comes after Kim spoke to The Sunday Times on her 'tough' experience with fame after recently splitting from Romeo, 22. While she could also be seen having her bronzed glow touched up by makeup artists and accentuating her ample cleavage in a shiny leopard print two-piece Photos also showed Kim's wardrobe laid out, with a personalised robe with her name emblazoned on the back, and she tucked into a strawberry in another shot, while clad in a matching red bikini And it also came just days after she shot down accusations that she was romantically involved with his brother Brooklyn, 26. In a statement posted to her Instagram account, she insisted: 'I will not continue to receive harassment or be embarrassed on the basis of lies, to fit a certain narrative. 'I have never been romantically involved in ANY capacity at ANY point with the person in question. Soon after Romeo shared a cryptic post about 'spreading unnecessary lies'. While Kim then got candid about how she juggles rumours about herself, in an interview with The Times' Style Magazine. She said: 'There are situations that you find yourself in that present you with new aspects, but at the same time I think it has always been something that I've been around and seen, so I just take it day by day and try to focus on the positives. 'Sometimes it's difficult to block things out because a lot of the time there are things said that are not necessarily true or necessarily positive, and your instinctive reaction is to want to be like, no, that's not true! 'But I think what I've learnt, at this point in life, is to try and take it with a pinch of salt.' Captioning the post, the stunner admitted that working with Agent Provocateur was a dream come true, as she revealed her personal connection to the brand Kim continued: 'It's definitely tough, whatever it is, when people are saying things about you that aren't necessarily true and, most importantly in my opinion, don't align with your character and your values. 'You want to turn around and reply to every comment and have your say in it, but at the end of the day you just can't.' Kim had been at the centre of the Beckham family fallout, after Brooklyn's wife Nicola Peltz, 30, reportedly claimed that she felt uncomfortable around her. Things came to a head when Brooklyn and Nicola were no shows at any of David's 50th birthday celebrations last month, with The Mail revealing that Kim has been made the 'scapegoat' in the feud. Brooklyn and his wife Nicola snubbed the football legend David's five celebrations to mark his milestone birthday, including celebrations in Miami, London, Paris the Cotswolds and a boys fishing trip to Scotland. He also failed to acknowledge his dad for Father's Day, despite David and Victoria publicly reaching out to their son. Earlier this month the Mail exclusively revealed Kim and Romeo had split after seven months together. Sources said how the pair's relationship had 'fizzled out' and their parting had 'nothing to do' with Nicola. A pal said: 'Romeo and Kim are both young and they had a lovely time together but at that age things don't always last forever and they decided to split up. 'They have been friendly since and have even been at the same venues. It's a huge shame, particularly as David and Victoria really adored her and thought she made Romeo happy but it wasn't to be. 'It happened a couple of weeks ago and relations have remained friendly between them.' Kim, is the well-heeled granddaughter of renowned post-war sculptor and painter William Turnbull, while her father Alex Turnbull and uncle Johnny were part of the post-punk band 23 Skidoo, formed in 1979. She dated Madonna and Guy Ritchie's son Rocco, and through that connection was part of a tightknit friendship group in 2016 which included Brooklyn. Kim and Brooklyn were undeniably close for a brief period – as photographs of them together at the time show - but suggestions that they were ever an item are wide of the mark. That Kim has now been 'thrown to the wolves' as the reason behind the family row is 'deeply upsetting' to Brooklyn's parents and brothers. US website TMZ wrote at the time: 'Sources say Brooklyn and Nicola were told to show up to the main celebrations or they wouldn't get a chance to see the family... leaving the two saddened because they simply won't be around Brooklyn's brother Romeo and his girlfriend, Kim Turnbull.'

How Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz became the hottest rumour on the tennis circuit
It has all the ingredients of a Richard Curtis summer hit: two remarkably good-looking leads in Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz (she of the magazine covers, he of the bullet-speed aces), a 'meet-cute' over the tennis nets, a photogenic London setting – and just enough will-they-won't-they ambiguity to make social media lose its mind. Sadly for Curtis fans, there hasn't yet been a declaration of love in the rain or a madcap race through Heathrow for either of the tennis stars – in fact there hasn't been a public confirmation of anything other than friendship. But judging by the gossip in the tennis world, and you'd think the Spaniard had been loitering outside Raducanu's house with placards reading: 'To me, you are perfect (at returning serve).' Here's what we do know. The pair – both 22 – have joined forces for a new US Open event in August, where major stars play mixed doubles for a $1 million (£734,000) prize a week before the main Flushing Meadows championship. Alcaraz, world number two and golden retriever in human form, let it slip in an interview earlier this summer that it was he who asked the British star if she would like to play with him, saying: 'We have a really good relationship: I have known her for a long time.' He also joked that it took her a while to get back to him – although Raducanu later set the record straight, telling the BBC (somewhat coyly), 'Yes, he asked me earlier on in the year and I was very surprised and honoured and obviously excited. Then I went through the formality of asking my coach, but of course I was going to say yes.' "Of course I was going to say yes." 🤩 Emma Raducanu explains how Carlos Alcaraz asked her to be his US Open doubles partner 🤝 — BBC Sport (@BBCSport) June 23, 2025 Already, this was enough to raise eyebrows. 'It suggests at the very least that he likes her,' says one tennis insider. 'He probably has a crush on her as it is hard to see why else he would ask her to play with him when he is number two and she is number 38, and he could have easily got a player in the top five. And look – I understand why he would: she is charming and beautiful, and definitely the best-looking tennis player at the moment. When she turns up to a conference, people who haven't seen her in the flesh before almost fall off their chairs. She completely glows.' Then, the rumour mill went full Jilly Cooper when Raducanu was seen cheering on the Spanish star at Queens last weekend, supporting him from the stands on both Thursday and Saturday, the day before he won the competition. 'I saw some really cool drop volleys,' said Raducanu of the match, 'and I was like: 'Yes, let's save some of that!' But he's got plenty of magic to bring to New York.' Perhaps it was the sunshine, the itsy-bitsy tennis shorts and the leafy west London setting but onlookers started acting like excitable teenagers, with one person telling The Sun that: 'It wasn't just the tennis lot who were talking about it. People who worked for the BBC and other broadcasters were all gossiping about it.' In a similarly breathless tone, another added, 'He was apparently seen at her hotel last week and on Thursday and Saturday, when Emma went to support him, Emma's car arrived just minutes after Carlos got to Queens with his team. Inside they were seen laughing and joking with one another. They seem very happy and relaxed with each other.' The duo we didn't know we needed 🤝 Carlos Alcaraz spoke on his upcoming partnership with Emma Raducanu at #USOpen 2025 🗣️ — Tennis Channel (@TennisChannel) June 17, 2025 At this point, it is still just whispers, wishful thinking and a lot of Instagram likes (yes, Alcaraz has double-tapped on most of Raducanu's posts this year). Until blurry paparazzi shots emerge of the two of them boarding a plane to Alcaraz's home town of Alicante, canoodling behind the umpire's chair on Centre Court or sharing a Pimm's on Henman Hill, we technically have to stick to 'just friends'. Luckily, they don't seem particularly perturbed by the rumours. 'They both seem to be having a lot of fun,' says Stuart Brumfitt, the editor of tennis magazine Bagel. 'When they're talking about each other they have these massive grins on their faces, so either they're in love or in on the joke and finding it really funny.' Perhaps because they go way back. They first met playing tennis as children, but it was at Wimbledon 2021 that brought them closer. 'He was always playing the day before me,' said Raducanu. 'I would see him win and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too. It was really cool to go through that tournament together and then I kept going through the US Open, we stayed in touch the whole time.' That summer, she won the US Open; a year later, he followed suit. Although this is where their paths diverge. Since then Alcaraz has soared, adding five grand slam wins to his name – including a recent extraordinary comeback at the French Open when he clawed back the championship title after losing the first two sets of the final. Raducanu, meanwhile, has had a tougher run, struggling with injuries and the pressure of post-fairytale, 'hope of Britain' fame (albeit while racking up more luxury brand partnerships than tennis wins). If they are dating, does the discrepancy open the door to professional jealousy? There is precedence for this: Chris Evert and John Lloyd's marriage famously struggled under the weight of her superior career. 'I don't think so,' says Telegraph tennis correspondent Simon Briggs. 'Of course jealousy exists in couples on the tennis circuit, but [Raducanu] has such a big world view that I don't think she sees tennis success as the be-all and end-all. I think she'd be all right dating someone more successful than her.' As for their respective personalities – well, they do say opposites attract. 'Carlos is sweet, but he doesn't have an awful lot of chat,' says one tennis correspondent. 'In general, he seems a bit of a homebody and he doesn't have the expansive personality you get in someone like Federer.' Brumfitt, who profiled Alcaraz recently, adds: 'Carlos is really lovely, I would describe him as the dream son: he's just a good boy, a family man who says things like his mum's cooking is the best in the world and holds open doors for strangers.' 🪙 . @carlosalcaraz and @EmmaRaducanu are still working to get on the same page ahead of the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship 😅 — US Open Tennis (@usopen) June 19, 2025 As for Raducanu, well, she's definitely the one with the Julia Roberts charm – if not quite the Julia Roberts CV. 'When we sit down with her, she is almost always brilliant,' says the tennis correspondent. 'Unlike a lot of these stars, she didn't spend all her formative years cloistered away on a tennis court so she knows how to communicate. Alcaraz is very nice with us but not necessarily surprising or interesting, just a normal bloke from a small town in Spain, whereas she talks about one day going to Oxford University, and is fizzing with ideas about everything and everyone.' Brumfitt adds that both stars are known for having kept some level of normality, despite being extremely famous 'It's quite impressive,' he says. 'When Emma is laughing and chatting, she seems like any other south London girl.' Still, it can't be easy – not least because the professional tennis circuit makes the cut-throat Manhattan dating scene look like a relaxing place to find a partner. Yes, tennis is full of beautiful under-35s at the peak of physical fitness and with plenty of money in the bank, but they also live on a brutal schedule where they travel for around 40 weeks a year. The result is that most people are either married, dating their coach or only emotionally available on brief holidays between tournaments. Male stars, at least, have plenty of opportunities for sex. 'Tennis fans inundate them with nudes on Instagram and will happily come and meet them in their hotel rooms – but if they want a girlfriend, they have to find someone who will travel the world with them,' says Briggs. This is perfectly possible: Morgan Riddle, who is going out with American tennis star Taylor Fritz, has turned her role as tennis-tour WAG into a full-blown influencer career. For women, however, the set-up is more complicated. 'How many men will give up their careers to travel to tennis tournaments with you? It's just not as socially accepted, so they're in a difficult situation, and often they end up sleeping with a member of their own entourage,' says Briggs. As for this duo – very few rumours have come to light about the Spaniard's dating history, while Raducanu has previously been linked to Carlo Agostinelli (who looks surprisingly similar to Alcaraz), former Harrow head boy and son of a private equity magnate, and Benjamin Heynold, a long-time friend who she was seen celebrating with in Times Square after her historic US Open win. For now, Raducanu and Alcaraz have a busy summer ahead. At Eastbourne today, during one of Raducanu's matches, cries of 'Where's Carlos?' could be heard from the stands. So expect the rumour mill to go into overdrive once the crucial mixed doubles tournament in New York actually gets under way. If they so much as smile at each other in between games, thousands of tennis-loving Mrs Bennets will start planning the wedding. And if, after one of them hits the winning shot, they joyfully embrace on the court before taking home $1 million in prize money? Well, Curtis will have to start writing the script for his next film immediately.

EXCLUSIVE Gabby Allen moves on from ex Casey O'Gorman just weeks after shock split as she strikes up romance with another Love Island star
Gabby Allen has moved on from ex-boyfriend Casey Gorman with another Love Island star, after their shock split last month. The fitness fanatic, 33, won Love Island All Stars with Casey, 28, back in February, but the couple announced they'd parted ways just three months later. And it seems that the stunner wasn't left heartbroken for long, as she's now struck up a romance with another hunky Islander, Blu Chegini. Blu, 26, appeared on the current season of the ITV2 show, but was the second star to be brutally dumped from the Mallorca villa earlier this month. The construction project manager was left single alongside Shea Mannings, 25, and in a shocking twist and show first, the pair were left to decide which of them would be sent packing. However, after neither budged, the decision was handed to their fellow islanders, and ultimately, Blu was dumped from the villa. But after appearing on spin-off show After Sun alongside Gabby, he wasted no time in shooting his shot - with the move seemingly paying off. He told MailOnline: 'Yeah me and Gabby met on After Sun. I've got her number but I won't say more than that, I can't say more than that right now.' Viewers were quick to clock pair's chemistry on After Sun, after host Maya Jama told Blu and fellow dumper Islander Sophie Lee: 'You guys still have the summer to find love - whether it's with each other or someone else - we just won't be able to watch it on telly.' Blu didn't hesitate in making a move, as he responded by waving to Gabby and All Stars pal Kaz Crossley, and pointedly saying: 'Hi Gabby!' As the audience went wild, Maya quipped: 'Wow, shooters shoot!' and Kaz delightedly declared: 'Yes! You're her type, babe.' Blu then asked Gabby: 'Can I pull for you for a chat?' and she hinted the attraction was mutual, as she jokingly pretended to walk over to him. Meanwhile, she also opened up on her recent split from Casey on the spin-off show, with Kaz issuing a damning verdict on her friend's ex-boyfriend. Getting the dirt on the break-up, host Maya asked Gabby what happened between her and the three-time Islander, to which the influencer joked: 'How long have we got?' 'You know what, not really that much to report,' she continued. 'I feel like when you're in the villa it's very different to when you get out. We're just at very different stages in our lives I think.' But Kaz, 30, was quick to step in to make it clear that Casey's behaviour played a part in their split, branding him a 'boy' and saying he lacked 'depth'. Keen to know more about the split, Maya asked Gabby: 'Did you have any inkling that it was going to not be a long-term forever thing?' 'No because he told me...' Gabby began, before deciding not to air the dirty laundry and adding: 'I mean you know what let's not get into it, it's fine.' Kaz then jumped in with a pointed comment as she said: 'Casey, he's a lovely boy — but emphasis on boy. 'I love Gabby, and I just feel like with a relationship you just need a bit more depth. We both do. We're both at that age where we're looking for our husbands.' Casey and Gabby won the £50,000 cash prize on All Stars in February but split just three months later, deciding they are better off as friends. Last month, an insight was given into the reason behind their split in resurfaced comments made by Gabby mere days before they went their separate ways. The reality star admitted she didn't have 'time' for a boyfriend and told how she was adjusting to making time for Casey after leaving the villa. Speaking to the Mirror at the BAFTA TV Awards, just two days before their split was made public, Gabby said: 'I have two businesses so I have to like try and juggle that. Which I don't have time to b****y see anyone, let alone have a boyfriend.' She added: 'You have to make time because otherwise you end up not seeing each other for a week. 'Like when we do see each other, we just wanna like snog and stuff and not be on camera!' News of the couple's separation was then confirmed with the pair insisting that they remained on 'amicable' terms. In a joint statement, their reps told MailOnline: 'After much thoughtful consideration, Gabby and Casey have decided to go their separate ways romantically. 'This decision was mutual, and they both remain on good terms as friends with a shared respect for each other.' Gabby's rep added: 'Gabby is grateful for the memories they've created together and wishes Casey nothing but the best as they both move forward on their individual journeys. She's excited for what the future holds and appreciates.' The split came as a surprise to fans as Gabby was seen supporting Casey as he ran the London Marathon earlier this month.
