Pakistan High Commission official in Delhi named in FIR for seeking Indian defence info, 2 arrested for spying
'We are verifying the status of diplomatic immunity extended to the accused. A call on whether he would be declared as persona non grata will be taken by Government of India,' a source aware of the details told ThePrint.
The official working with the Pakistan High Commission, identified as Danish, was booked in this connection. Danish, a Pakistan national, was allegedly passing on information collected from the arrested duo to Pakistan government, ThePrint has learnt.
Amritsar: Two persons, including a woman, were arrested on the charges of spying and leaking defence-related information to an official posted at the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi, the Punjab Police said Sunday.
An FIR (First Information Report) has been filed by Malerkotla district police under Section 152, which deals with acts endangering sovereignty unity and integrity of India, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, which deals with acts endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India as well as offences and punishments related to spying.
Both the arrested accused, identified as Guzala and Yameen Mohammad, are in police custody till 12 May.
Guzala met Danish in the Pakistan High Commission when she went to apply for a visa in February, the sources aware of the case said, adding that the duo kept in touch over messaging platforms WhatsApp and Telegram.
Danish cultivated the woman as a source for sensitive information and she started providing him information about Army activities. 'She has revealed to have gone to Pakistan High Commission earlier last month to share information,' another source privy to the case details told ThePrint
The module was busted Thursday when police arrested Guzala from Malerkotla, whose questioning led to the other suspect, Yameen, behind this espionage module, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said Sunday.
The arrest of the duo, both Malerkotla residents, came just a day after India declared to have carried out Operation Sindur to take out terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Guzala told interrogators that an official of the Pakistan High Commission had so far paid Rs 30,000 to her in exchange for sensitive information related to the Indian Army, the police said.
Police officials privy to the investigation said that evidence confirming the transfer of information has been found in the suspects' mobile phones, which have been sent for forensic analysis. While Guzala has never been to Pakistan, Yameen has been to Pakistan in 2018 and 2022, they said.
The case comes to light less than a week after the Amritsar Rural Police nabbed two local residents, Palak Sher Masih and Suraj Masih, on charges of sharing photos and videos of troop movements and the entry and exit points of their camps The duo was allegedly paid Rs 10,000 for providing information.
Giving details of the case, Malerkotla Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gagan Ajit Singh said in a statement that Guzala was arrested for leaking sensitive information regarding Army movements.
'During questioning, the accused Guzala confessed to having shared the confidential information about Army activities with the Pakistani national posted at the High Commission in New Delhi. The accused further revealed that she was doing it in lieu of money, and the accused official has sent her Rs 30,000 in two transactions— Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000— via UPI,' the statement added.

India-US trade pact: Officials discuss market access, digital trade, customs facilitation
India and the US are working towards negotiating the first tranche of a mutually beneficial, multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by fall (September-October) 2025. According to the official, both sides agreed to continue negotiations to achieve an expeditious conclusion of the initial tranche of the BTA. New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) India and the US teams discussed issues pertaining to market access, digital trade, and customs facilitation during the week-long deliberations on the proposed bilateral trade agreement, an official said. To advance the objective of concluding a comprehensive and forward-looking BTA, a US delegation led by Additional US Trade Representative visited India from June 4-10. 'During the visit, in-depth negotiations were held on various elements of the proposed BTA that among others included areas such as market access, SPS (sanitary and phyto-sanitary/TBT (technical barriers to trade), digital trade, customs and trade facilitation and legal framework,' the official said. The negotiations held with the US side were productive and helped in making progress towards crafting a mutually beneficial and balanced agreement including through achievement of early wins. The visit of the US official team was important as India and America are likely to agree on an interim trade agreement by the end of June, with New Delhi pushing for full exemption from the 26 per cent reciprocal tariff on domestic goods. The US has suspended the proposed tariffs till July 9. There are expectations that an interim trade deal could be finalised before that. The US remained India's largest trading partner for the fourth consecutive year in 2024-25, with bilateral trade valued at USD 131.84 billion. The US accounts for about 18 per cent of India's total goods exports, 6.22 per cent in imports, and 10.73 per cent in the country's total merchandise trade. Scam alert: Crooks hack former Karnataka minister Roshan Baig's WhatsApp, seek money from his contacts
BENGALURU: Former minister R Roshan Baig approached police, seeking action against miscreants who hacked his WhatsApp account recently and sent fraudulent messages to his contacts. According to a complaint filed by Baig with East CEN Crime police, his account was hacked on June 5. He immediately alerted his contacts not to click on any links or respond to the messages asking for financial help. 'My friend informed me that he was sending Rs 84,000 as requested by me. I realised it was a fraud and told him to stop. Then I got to know that he received the message from my WhatsApp number. It is not the case of crooks using a random number and putting my photo as a display picture,' Baig told TOI. 'Within a few minutes, my son got a call from afriend who also received a message asking for financial help. My son alerted me . Before we could take steps to stop the fraud, my grandson, who was coming to India from abroad, called me and said he received a message on WhatsApp in which I asked for Rs 85,000. I surrendered my sim card, and purchased a new one on the same number. Since we ensured all my contacts were aware of the hacking, none of them transferred the money,' he said. A case was registered under the Information Technology Act.
