Sibal questions Dhankhar's 'inaction' after SC drops probe into Allahabad HC judge
NEW DELHI: Amid reports that the Supreme Court dropped its investigation against Allahabad HC judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav following an intervention from the Rajya Sabha, Upper House MP Kapil Sibal on Tuesday questioned why Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has not taken any action on the notice seeking an impeachment motion against the judge. Addressing media in the capital, Sibal, who is also a senior advocate and SCBA president, said the whole incident smacks of 'discrimination.' He alleged that the government is attempting to save the judge after he made 'entirely communal' remarks last year. 'On one hand the Rajya Sabha secretary general wrote to the Chief Justice of India to not go ahead with an in-house inquiry against Yadav as a petition was pending against him before the Upper House, which was not done in the case of Justice Yashwant Varma,' he said. 'Why did you not write a letter over in-house inquiry against Justice Varma. So does this government want to protect Shekhar Yadav, we think they want to save him,' he said. Speaking on the Uniform Civil Code, Justice Yadav of Allahabad HC on December 8, 2024 reportedly said that Hindus did not expect Muslims to follow their culture but only wanted them not to disrespect the same. Speaking at a VHP event, he had stated that the country would run as per the wishes of the 'Bahusankhayak' (majority) and that the Uniform Civil Code would soon become a reality.

West Bengal Assembly: No ‘Op Sindoor' in resolution, BJP says ‘insult to armed forces'
The West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution condemning the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in which 26 men, mostly tourists, were killed by terrorists. The resolution, moved by Speaker Biman Banerjee, also thanked the armed forces for their response during Operation Sindoor and lauded their precision attacks on terror centres in Pakistan. The resolution, however, did not mention Operation Sindoor. 'This House expresses its profound sense of shock and anguish at the barbaric and inhumane attack perpetrated on innocent tourists in the Baisaran valley of Jammu and Kashmir on the April 22, which resulted in the tragic loss of 26 innocent lives, including three from West Bengal,' the resolution stated. 'This House commends the coordinated efforts of the different wings of the Indian Armed Forces in targeting with absolute precision and destroying major terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and places on record its gratitude and appreciation for their relentless efforts in protecting the pride and dignity of the nation. This House also commends the people of the country and especially of Jammu and Kashmir for their extraordinary display of unity, compassion and resilience in the aftermath of the attack; and … strongly condemns this brutal attack and at the same time salutes the discipline, dedication and courage shown by the different wings of the Indian Armed Forces in combating militant and terrorist activities and safeguarding the sovereignty of the Nation,' it further stated. The BJP, however, hit out at the government for not mentioning Operation Sindoor in the resolution and accused the TMC of 'undermining the significance' of the operation. 'Why is there an objection to the word 'Sindoor' in the proposal? Why is the name missing?' Leader of Opposition in Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, said. His demand to include phrases like 'terrorists targeted Hindus' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' in the resolution was rejected by the Speaker. Adhikari claimed that TMC MLAs like Firhad Hakim, Narendranath Chakraborty and Udayan Guha made negative remarks about Operation Sindoor during the debate. Guha said defiantly, 'Yes, I said it. I'll say it again and again.'

2 More Pak Sympathisers Arrested In Assam, Total Arrests Reach 92
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that two persons have been arrested in the state for expressing their 'pro-Pakistan' stand on social media. The arrests happened from Nagaon and Lakhimpur districts in the state. The persons have been identified as Sabikul Islam and Dulal Bora. Islam was taken into custody from the Lakhimpur district while Bora was arrested by Nagaon police. According to CM Sarma, a total of 92 anti-nationals are now lodged in jail for sympathising with Pakistan. He said, "Our systems are constantly tracking anti-national posts on social media and taking action." Among the 92 arrested people, the most prominent is the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam. He was the first person to be arrested in the state for the "pro-Pakistan" stand. Aminul Islam, an AIUDF MLA from Assam's Dhing Assembly constituency, was arrested on May 1 on sedition charges following his provocative statement regarding the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. In a video clip circulated on social media, the AIUDF leader is heard claiming that the Pahalgam and Pulwama attacks were part of a "government conspiracy". Aminul Islam said, "Six years ago in Pulwama, when the RDX blast happened and 42 soldiers died, I said on that day that the Pulwama blast happened at the behest of a conspiracy of the Central government, and it was a conspiracy to win the 2019 Lok Sabha polls." He added that what happened in Pahalgam is that the "BJP has been peddling that the terrorists asked about religion and opened fire only on Hindus, and they let go of Muslims". "But the victims said that the terrorists opened fire without asking about anybody's name, and I doubt that the nexus which was involved in the Pulwama attack in which RDX was used, is behind the Pahalgam incident," he said. "If the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government does not conduct a fair investigation into the incident and tries to bring a division between Hindus and Muslims, I would believe that this incident happened because of a conspiracy," he added. However, the AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal distanced himself from his party legislator's comments. Ajmal said, "AIUDF stands with the government. The terrorists have no religion, and those who spread terrorism are against Islam."
