Penang's new ferry service hits five million passengers

BUTTERWORTH: Penang's new ferry service, introduced by Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) to replace the iconic car-carrying ferry, recorded five million passengers today, after just 17 months of operation.
This marks a historic milestone, proving that the ferry service remains a key mode of transportation for the people of Penang, as well as tourists wishing to cross from the mainland to the island and vice-versa.
PPSB chief executive officer Datuk V. Sasedharan said the achievement motivated the company to continue improving its services, including considering passenger feedback.
"The ferry is an important mode of transport for Penang, having been in the state for over 100 years.
"PPSB is proud because we have modernised the ferry service (since Aug 7, 2023), and now, this new ferry has successfully carried five million passengers, showing strong acceptance.
"We are pleased with this success and will continue to improve the services, including considering the feedback from passengers from time to time," he said at the 5 Million Passengers Milestone event for the new Penang ferry.
It was officiated by PPSB chairman Datuk Seri Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza in Anjung Tinjau, Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim, here, today.
Sasedharan said 74 per cent of passengers using the new ferry service were pedestrians, and the rest were motorcycle and bicycle riders.
"Besides tourists, most of these passengers are daily commuters from the mainland (Seberang Prai) travelling to work on the island."
Sasedharan said despite the high number of passengers, the ferry service still did not generate profits due to the high operating costs.
"However, we will strive with future plans to collaborate with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) to synchronise the ferry schedule with the electric train service (ETS).
"This will allow passengers who disembark at KTM Butterworth and wish to cross to the island to use the ferry service, offering them savings.
"We also provide free ferry services during certain months as a promotional measure to attract more passengers to use the service," he said.

Petronas urged to consider re-investing in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has been urged to consider re-investing in Uzbekistan to boost the republic's oil and gas sector. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the Uzbekistan government had submitted an official request to Malaysia for Petronas to reconsider investing in the republic. 'They (Uzbekistan) expressed their desire for Petronas to be involved again in gas investments in Uzbekistan. I agreed to bring the request back to the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) for consideration. 'I also discussed how we want to improve technical capabilities in the energy sector. That is why they (Uzbekistan) send a lot of students to universities in Malaysia, especially Universiti Teknologi Petronas and so on,' he said at a press conference, concluding a four-day working visit to the republic that began on Saturday. In mid-2013, Petronas withdrew from the production sharing agreements in the Ustyurt region and the Baysun Investment Block Development in the Surkhandarya region. In 2014, Petronas closed its representative office in Uzbekistan. Fadillah, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said that during his meeting with Uzbekistan's Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, the country also expressed its desire to establish a specialised university to produce more experts in the fields of electrical and renewable energy such as the Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten). 'So we agreed to help them and we proposed Uniten as one of the models for them to implement it. Later, they will send their team to visit and see how to develop the curriculum and also how this expertise can be shared,' he added. The Uzbek government also proposed that more students from that country be given the opportunity to continue their studies at Universiti Teknologi Petronas, in line with efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of education.

DOSM: Malaysia's May 2025 inflation at 1.2% lowest in 51 months

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia registered an inflation rate of 1.2 per cent in May 2025, the lowest in 51 months, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) at 134.4 versus 132.8 a year ago, according to the Statistics Department Malaysia (DOSM). In a statement today, it said Malaysia's slower inflation trend as an open economy was in line with selected countries and region, namely Eurozone (1.9 per cent), South Korea (1.9 per cent), Indonesia (1.6 per cent) and the Philippines (1.3 per cent), in tandem with the decline in global oil prices. 'The decline was also reflected in the Producer Price Index, which registered a -3.4 per cent in April 2025,' it said. The mining sector was the main contributor with a -17.8 per cent (March 2025: -15.0 per cent) due to a fall in crude petroleum extraction of -19.8 per cent, it said. The food and beverages group, which contributes 29.8 per cent to the CPI, rose more slowly at 2.1 per cent in May 2025 versus the 2.3 per cent in April 2025. 'The subgroup of food-at-home did not record any changes in May 2025 versus April 2025, which increased 0.5 per cent,' it said. However, the food-away-from-home subgroup was up 4.4 per cent versus 4.3 per cent in the preceding month. Moreover, DOSM said a few groups recorded a higher increase compared to April 2025; restaurant and accommodation services, 3.0 per cent (April 2025: 2.9 per cent), health, 1.1 per cent (April 2025: 0.9 per cent) and furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, 0.2 per cent (April 2025: 0.1 per cent). The information and communication and the clothing and footwear groups remained in negative territory, registering -5.2 per cent and – 0.2 per cent, respectively. Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said 342 out of 573 of the items, or 59.7 per cent, recorded price increases. Of the 342 items, 330 items (96.5 per cent) registered an increase of less than or equal to 10 per cent, while 12 items recorded increases of more than 10 per cent in May 2025. 'However, 180 items (31.4 per cent) showed a decline and 51 items remained unchanged, which, to a certain extent, offsets the inflation from increasing further,' he said. In line with global oil market price changes, diesel in May 2025 recorded a slower 12.4 per cent price increase compared with the 15 per cent in April 2025. The average price for diesel in Peninsular Malaysia was RM2.81 per litre against RM2.15 in May 2024 (April 2025: RM2.95), while the average price of diesel for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan remained at RM2.15 per litre. Meanwhile, unleaded petrol RON97 remained at a negative range of 10.4 per cent versus -6.3 in April 2025. The average price of unleaded petrol RON97 in May 2025 was RM3.11 a litre against RM3.47 in May 2024 (April 2025: RM3.25). Mohd Uzir said 11 states recorded increases below the national inflation rate of 1.2 per cent, with Kelantan recording the lowest rise at 0.3 per cent in May 2025. Five states recorded increases above the national inflation level, namely Johor (1.8 per cent), Negeri Sembilan (1.6 per cent), Selangor (1.5 per cent), Melaka (1.5 per cent) and Kuala Lumpur (1.4 per cent). — BERNAMA

Govt succeeds in overturning order to transfer Duta Enclave land title to Semantan Estate

He also directed parties to file their expert valuation report on the market value of the subject land as at December 3, 1956, within 90 days from today. 24 Jun 2025 01:53pm The Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Land Registrar succeeded in its appeal to overturn the High Court's ruling that had ordered it to transfer the title of the 263.272-acre "Duta enclave' land in Kuala Lumpur back to Semantan Estate (1952) Sdn Bhd. Photo - 123RF PUTRAJAYA - The Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Land Registrar succeeded in its appeal to overturn the High Court's ruling that had ordered it to transfer the title of the 263.272-acre "Duta enclave' land in Kuala Lumpur back to Semantan Estate (1952) Sdn Bhd. A three-member bench consisting Federal Court judge Datuk Lee Swee Seng and Court of Appeal judges Datuk Azimah Omar and Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh had allowed the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Land Registrar's appeal to set aside the High Court's decision. Justice Lee, held that the 2009 High Court decision, did not order the Government of Malaysia to transfer the subject land back to Semantan Estate. "As such, there was no order to execute. In the absence of an order for the transfer of the land back to Semantan Estate, an order for declaration cannot be executed, as it is only declarative of the rights of parties. He said a declaratory order merely affirms the legal rights of parties involved and it does not carry with it the power of enforcement, such as specific performance, adding that such orders are non-executable by nature. Justice Lee, who delivered the court's unanimous decision, however, ruled that Semantan Estate is entitled to adequate compensation, to be assessed from the year 1956, the time the government took possession of the land. Semantan Estate's legal battle began in 2003 when it sued the government, claiming the land was unlawfully acquired. The amount of mesne profits, to be assessed by the High Court, shall no longer be payable once full payment of compensation has been made. He also directed parties to file their expert valuation report on the market value of the subject land as at December 3, 1956, within 90 days from today. Justice Lee said two payments made by the government - RM1.321 million on December 21, 1956, and another RM79, 241 on February 3, 1959 - would be deducted from the amount of compensation to be assessed. He also awarded interest of six per annum to the company from December 3, 1956 to the date of payment upon payment of the compensation as assessed. The disputed land, located in the prime Jalan Duta area known as the Duta Enclave, houses government buildings that include the national hockey stadium, Malaysian Institute of Integrity, national archives, Kuala Lumpur Syariah Court, the Inland Revenue Board building and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Academy. Semantan Estate's legal battle began in 2003 when it sued the government, claiming the land was unlawfully acquired. In 2009, Judicial Commissioner Zura Yahya ruled in favour of Semantan Estate that the government had unlawfully acquired the land. The government's subsequent appeals at the Court of Appeal and Federal Court were unsuccessful. In February 2017, Semantan Estate initiated a lawsuit against the Kuala Lumpur Land Registrar to enforce the 2009 High Court judgment. - BERNAMA
