For the second straight year, the Florida Panthers ended the NHL season by beating the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final.

Florida capped off the series with a definitive 5–1 win in Game 6 in a dominant showing at home behind Sam Reinhart's four-goal effort and Sergei Bobrovsky's 28 saves.
Yet, when the opening 2026 Stanley Cup odds dropped at BetMGM shortly after the final horn, the Panthers weren't listed as the favorites to hoist the Cup next year.
That label, as surprising as it might sound, went to the team they've now beaten in back-to-back Finals—Connor McDavid's Oilers.
Edmonton opened at +650 to win it all next season, slightly ahead of the Panthers at +750.
Florida will try to become the first team to three-peat since the 1980s Islanders dynasty, but oddsmakers have pegged Edmonton, which hasn't lifted the Cup since 1990, and has lost two consecutive finals to the same team, as the early frontrunner.

The rest of the top five includes the Avalanche (+800), Stars (+850), and Hurricanes (+900)—all familiar contenders with multiple trips to the conference finals in the past few years.
Every 2025 conference finalist, in fact, ranks among the top teams again, except for Colorado. That said, the Avs' high rank comes within the context of their recent 2022 Stanley Cup title.

Florida's upcoming free agency could have factored into the early outlook.
Both Conn Smythe winner Sam Bennett and 37-year-old Brad Marchand (the runner-up for the trophy) are set to enter unrestricted free agency on July 1.
The Oilers, meanwhile, don't have any star player in the upcoming free-agent list, which bodes well for them if they want to bring back their core group to give it another run.

Tampa Bay Rays say they are in talks for a potential sale amid stadium uncertainty

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays say they are in 'exclusive discussions' with a Florida investment group for a potential sale of the team. The Rays are valued at $1.25 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Stuart Sternberg bought the Major League Baseball club for $200 million in 2004. 'The Tampa Bay Rays announced that the team has recently commenced exclusive discussions with a group led by Patrick Zalupski, Bill Cosgrove, Ken Babby and prominent Tampa Bay investors concerning a possible sale of the team,' the club said Wednesday while declining further comment. The potential sale comes at a precarious time for the Rays and their home ballpark. They are playing this season at the spring training home of the New York Yankees in Tampa after the roof of Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg was heavily damaged during Hurricane Milton last October. Before the hurricane, the Rays and the city had agreed on a plan for a $1.3 billion stadium development project next to Tropicana Field. In March, Sternberg said the club was withdrawing from that agreement. St. Petersburg is spending about $55 million to repair Tropicana Field with a plan for the Rays to return there in 2026. The city and the club have a three-year agreement to play there. Beyond that, the club's future in the Tampa Bay area is uncertain. When the Rays withdrew from the project, the city noted that it was possible the club would have new owners. 'If in the coming months a new owner, who demonstrates a commitment to honoring their agreements and our community priorities emerges, we will consider a partnership to keep baseball in St. Pete,' Mayor Ken Welch said in March. 'But we will not put our city's progress on hold as we await a collaborative and community-focused baseball partner.' ___ AP MLB:

Spurs Linked to Surprising Finals MVP in NBA Trade Rumors

Spurs Linked to Surprising Finals MVP in NBA Trade Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Among many fans and analysts, it seems imminent that the San Antonio Spurs will strike a trade for an All-Star this offseason. Equipped with stars Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox, on top of tons of depth and tradeable assets, the Spurs seem primed to make a big splash to leapfrog the Western Conference. Advertisement One of the bigger, less surprising names on the block is Kevin Durant. Rumors have been flying rampant about a potential Durant to San Antonio deal. With recent reporting that the Spurs have been radio silent in discussions with the Phoenix Suns over the past 48 hours, it seems unlikely that a deal will be struck there. According to ClutchPoint's Brett Siegel, the Spurs could be in the running for a pair of Finals MVPs. "Two names stand out as superstar targets for the Spurs outside of Kevin Durant: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown." Siegel reported on X. "If San Antonio holds off on pursuing Durant, these will be the two stars to keep an eye on for San Antonio moving forward." A deal for Antetokounmpo has long been rumored after back-to-back disappointing postseasons for the Milwaukee Bucks. The real surprise in this report is Jaylen Brown. Advertisement Just a year ago, Brown won the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, averaging 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game in Boston's decisive 4-1 series victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Brown has spent the entirety of his nine-year NBA career in Boston. He has averaged over 20 points per game in each of the last six seasons, with his highest mark being 26.6 points per game in 2023. Brown's playmaking took a leap this year, averaging a career-high 4.5 assists per game, to go along with 22.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. With Jayson Tatum out for likely the entirety of next season after rupturing his Achilles in the playoffs, Boston could look to move Brown for some long-term help and salary relief. Brown is owed $236 million over the next four seasons. Advertisement On the court, Brown would slide in nicely next to Wembanyama, Fox, and Stephon Castle. He likely wouldn't need to take the 17.7 field goal attempts per game he took this season, but his shot diet could be a bit easier. Brown shot a career-low 32.4 percent from three this year on 5.7 attempts per game. As a do-it-all wing, Brown can bring scoring, defense, and newly-found playmaking to the Spurs lineup. 4 unimpeachable reasons a Connor McDavid trade needs to happen

I'm sorry to pour salt on the wound, Edmonton Oilers fans, but this is the truth about Connor McDavid, who has now gone 0-2 in the Stanley Cup Final the past two years: it's time to trade the superstar. How can you trade a player who's done everything asked of him over the years and who has been the NHL's best player year after year? We'll get into the reasons, but even if they don't, the Oilers are facing an offseason full of questions that need answering after getting beat in six games, with the Florida Panthers dominating most of the way. Advertisement Let's dive in: 1. The Oilers haven't fully given him what needs If you're going to win the Stanley Cup, you need a goaltender to make key saves. The Oilers never really addressed that -- Stuart Skinner has been good, but not dominant. In years past, Mike Smith was in between the pipes. And this year, Skinner and Calvin Pickard split time. Not good. And while the defense has some names on paper like Darnell Nurse, Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm, it felt like health and depth were questions. This stat tells you something: 2. Connor McDavid's contract is up after next season This is the elephant in the room. His $12.6 million comes off the books next year. What if he plays out next year without signing an extension, using it as leverage over the Oilers to finally win a Cup? And then he could leave without Edmonton getting anything back? Advertisement The Colorado Avalanche had this issue with Mikko Rantanen and got out with a massive trade. If there's any sign of McDavid being unhappy, it's better to get back assets than to lose him for nothing. 3. The Oilers are in a cap crunch Evan Bouchard is a restricted free agent who will need to be paid. Evander Kane needs a new deal after next season. And obviously, McDavid's free agency looms. So it might be harder to make those improvements to help McDavid out. Running it back with him and Leon Draisatl isn't the worst thing. But there are decisions to be made. 4. A divorce just might be best for both parties There are just times when a star -- even of McDavid's caliber -- and a franchise just never get there together, and a change of scenery for both parties is necessary. That might be the case here, where McDavid doesn't want to spend his prime when the Oilers' Stanley Cup window closes and needs years to open again. Advertisement We'll see. This offseason could be VERY intriguing if McDavid goes on the market. This article originally appeared on For The Win: Connor McDavid trade needs to happen for Oilers after Stanley Cup loss
