MOVIE REVIEW: We head towards the edge with mystery-thriller 'Drop'
Several suspects served up on menu during first date from hell.
Having helmed the Happy Death Day flicks and Freaky, Christopher Landon has built up a strong reputation for comedy-horror.
With Drop he veers into mystery-thriller territory as widowed mum Violet (Meghann Fahy) is bombarded with anonymous threatening messages on her phone during her first date with Henry (Brandon Sklenar).
The whodunnit element is effectively played out in Jillian Jacobs' and Chris Roach's script as several potential suspects fill the luxurious restaurant.
Violet is literally and figuratively dangling over the edge with an evil blackmailer manipulating her every move while she looks out on a colossal drop from the window at her table.
Landon jazzes up his shooting style with swooping shots, close-ups on faces and key objects and on-screen text sharing the messages Violet is receiving.
Fahy, a relative unknown beyond her turn in TV's The White Lotus, is wonderful as the under intense pressure, out to do the right thing lead.
Her powerful back story lends her character vulnerability and an understandable lack of trust in others.
Sklenar is charm personified; the guy is so likeable, caring and funny you're praying he isn't involved in Violet's torment.
The supporting characters all play their part in adding to the mystery while making for endearing or irritating possible suspects or allies.
This is Landon's most serious movie thus far, although he does include some jokes, and Jeffery Self's first night on the job waiter Matt feels like he's been dropped in from a comedy flick.
The amount of times Violet gets up from the table becomes ridiculous and you end up questioning why even a sweet guy like Henry wouldn't call it a night.
Landon really goes for broke with a wild ending that increases the element of danger and it works as a resolution to the numerous tense face-to-face encounters where characters are often trying their best to say things with body language or avoid doing something terrible.
Drop is Landon's most mature outing to date and its Hitchcockian trappings mix well with modern technology and attitudes.

Code of Silence is about to bring the curtain down on its first season. The crime thriller has kept audiences on the edges of their seats throughout the last month. Just one episode is left and it is set to air on TV tonight (June 2) - although the full boxset is already on ITVX already. The ending might have left you with plenty of questions - not least whether it will be back for more episodes. Here's all you need to know: What happened in the previous episode of Code of Silence? Spoiler warning. The article contains spoilers for the whole of the ITV show Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Rose Ayling-Ellis in Code of Silence episode 6 | Mammoth/ ITV The penultimate episode (five) proved to be quite the dramatic affair, with the heist finally going ahead. Liam, having clocked that Alison was working with the police, gave her a false lead. But after she realised the target was actually the hotel they had visited together earlier in the season and rushed over. Liam hacks security and Braden gets his hands on the necklace, but is tricked into dropping it into the laundry chute. Braden gets into a gunfight and kills a bodyguard and injures police officer Ben. He manages to escape, while Liam also gets away with the necklace. Alison is arrested and interviewed by the police - who believe that she could have been involved in the heist. The episode opens with Alison and her mum being put into a safe house, while the search for Liam and Braden goes on. Alison attempts to visit Ben in hospital but is chased off by his wife. DS Ashleigh Francis and DI James Marsh interview 'Cruella' - Helen - under caution, however she denies her role in the heist. Liam's phone pings in Budapest, but the police are wary that it could be a trick because of how savvy he is with technology. Braden is sighted and the police raid a house, but he has left. Alison and her mum get used to their new surroundings, she is visited by DI James who explains that the evidence she has gathered will not stand up in court - especially due to her relationship with Liam. Rose Ayling-Ellis (R) in Code of Silence | Mammoth Screen/ ITV Before he leaves, DI James shows Alison a picture of Charlie, a foster father who died a few years prior, and she spots Liam's ring. It is suggested that the heist was organised by Liam to get revenge for Charlie's death. She sneaks out of the safe house and meets up with Liam. Once again, Liam attempts to convince Alison to come away with him - by taking a private plane to Belgium and then Brazil. But she tries to get him to go to the police to stop Helen and Braden. DI James visits Charlie's widow, who he has befriended after his death, and finally gets her to admit that she knows Liam. Dawn says he was Charlie's favourite and doesn't give him up. Charlotte Ritchie and Rose Ayling-Ellis in Code of Silence | MAMMOTH SCREEN/ITV productions Alison's mum finds a note from her, explaining that she is gone. She returns to the Cambridge Tap and speaks to her former manager - but he is reluctant to give evidence saying 'you don't cross people like Braden'. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The audio then cuts out, in that clever way it has in the show, and footsteps approach from behind Alison. Braden video calls Liam and reveals that he is now holding her hostage. Alison is taken to an ominous looking warehouse by Braden, who is armed with a gun. Liam returns to Dawn's house and explains that all he did was for revenge - but ends by telling his former foster parent that Alison has been captured. He meets with Helen, who takes him to the warehouse and Braden appears again. He holds Alison at gunpoint and Liam hands over the necklace - despite her warnings that Braden won't let them go. Braden lets Alison go but orders Liam to get on his knees and he uses sign language to pass on a secret message to her - that the police are about to arrive. DI James and armed police swoop in and arrest Braden and Helen. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It is revealed that Liam had contacted the police and before he is taken away, Alison is able to speak with him. He tells her that it was 'worth it' to give himself up to save her. The show then jumps forward two months and Alison joins DS Ashleigh in court. Liam appears, dressed in a suit, and signs a message to Alison before he is stopped by a bailiff. Liam pleads guilty to conspiracy to rob and Alison is later shown packing up to move to a new flat. DI James visits her and tells her that Joseph Holhurst has been charged for money laundering. He also reveals that her payment for her work as an informant has gone through - and it is shown to be £50,000. In the final moments he passes her a leaflet for a forensic lip-reading course and encourages her to take it. 'I'm a fragrance expert - book boyfriends would wear these scents'
Fragrence expert shares what book lovers' favourite male characters would smell like - some might surprise you My friends often tease me for having two very specific interests: books and perfumes. So when a conversation came up about what 'book boyfriends' smell like, I knew it was time to put my niche interests to the test. I know I'm not the only one who has flicked through pages of the latest BookTok trending novel and thought the guys smell pretty good, so I decided to track down what some of the biggest book boyfriends smell like. I even headed to my Instagram and asked everyone there for their favourite book boyfriends so I wouldn't miss any. So I've headed to my library and searched for just how our favourite book boyfriends smell and matched it up with fragrances so your real life boyfriend, or partner, can smell just like them. Now there are some missing here, with either there being no description in the books what he smells like or there not being anything on the market that I could find to fit the bill. He's not in the official list below but Shatter Me's Aaron Warner would probably wear a basic gardenia body spray because that's what he smells like during that first kiss. Rhysand - A Court of Thorns and Roses series Arguably he's BookTok's favourite boyfriend and for someone we've seen lovingly called a 'shadow daddy' online he seems to have a very fresh and light smell. In Chapter 48 of A Court of Mist and Fire, just before things heat up, is the line: "He tangled his legs with mine, and then a heavier, warmer darkness settled over us, smelling of citrus and the sea." From this it seems fair to assume that this is what Rhysand smells like and luckily there's a scent out there that seems like a dead ringer. Wood Sage and Sea Salt by Jo Malone London is a blend of sea salt, seaweed and grapefruit (while this isn't necessarily the first citrus fruit that springs to mind it is undeniably a citrus fruit). There is also a touch of wood there but in my opinion that's needed to round it out to a well balanced fragrance. Jo Malone London scents are expensive, a full sized bottle costs £118 but for those just wanting to trial it 9ml bottles exist for £18. Fortunately Jo Malone London also releases most of their scents in a candle and that means it's possible to have your house smell just like Rhysand while you're reading about him, although the candle is £56 for a 45 hour burn time. Xaden Riorson - Empyrean series Now if anyone could dethrone the Lord of the Night Court, it's the guy with the dragon. In Chapter 10 of Fourth Wing, towards the end, Violet and Xaden are facing off when he comes close enough for her to smell him. The key line reads: "His ominous tone is at odds with his gentle grasp, and sh*t, does he have to smell so good? Like mint and leather and something I can't quite identify, something that borders between citrus and floral." Now Violet can't identify it when it's right in front of her but I did my best to find something that fits the bill. I was surprised by which scent won overall. For me it's a choice between Eros by Versace (from £55) and Rabanne's 1 Million (from £66) - but 1 Million just edges Eros out for me. Both of them include citrus fruits, a slight floral and the necessary mint and leather but Eros notably has candy apple in there while 1 Million has cinnamon and 'spicy notes'. It feels safe to say Xaden leans more spicy. Miles Nowak - Funny Story Emily Henry is one of the biggest names in contemporary romance and for good reason. Her books are filled with men that are easy to fall in love with but our favourite has to be Miles. In Chapter 4, Miles Nowak is ushering a very tipsy Daphne home and explaining how he thinks fellow bartenders can smell that he's one of them. Notably the book reads: "Does it smell like gingersnaps?' The slur in my voice has worsened as we climbed the stairs. Miles stops outside our front door, laughter gurgling out of him. 'Gingersnaps?' That's what he smells like. Sweet and a little spicy. A natural earthy smell folded into a sugary baked good." While I love a smoky blend on men as much as the next girl, it's the sweet scent of sugary baked goods that hold my heart so I was thrilled with Miles taste in scents. Now there was an obvious choice for this, and Jo Malone London if you're reading this we are begging you to bring it back, the limited edition Ginger Biscuit would've been an outright winner. However it currently is out of stock everywhere online and I'm not sending anyone to fight for the few remaining bottles on eBay. Serge Lutens Five o'clock au Gingembre is supposed to smell like a slightly more complex take on Ginger Biscuit and is currently reduced on LookFantastic but even reduced is still £115.20 for a 50ml bottle. There is a more budget friendly option on the market, Ginger Babe from Aroma Concepts which is currently £24 on Amazon. There aren't many reviews on Amazon but on TikTok and fragrance forums there's a lot of buzz about it. Alex Claremont-Diaz - Red, White and Royal Blue Seeing him played by Taylor Zakhar Perez definitely hasn't hurt the internet's love of Alex Claremont-Diaz, the First Son of the United States in the feelgood romance. The film has actually done us a solid, as it doesn't strictly say in the book what he smells like, but in the hospital scene of the film (about 15 minutes in) Prince Henry comments on Alex's signature scent: " Santal 33? Makes sense." The Le Labo scent is quite pricey, with the cheapest price we've found for it being £74 for a 15ml bottle, but we've got to agree with Prince Henry. It makes sense. Haymitch Abernathy - The Hunger Games series Now in the past I wouldn't have thought of Haymitch and a book boyfriend in the same sentence, but with the release of Sunrise on the Reaping and the upcoming film. We are all kind of loving him at the moment. I've not found any lines in the book that outright say what he smells like but it seems fair to assume he would smell like wood smoke and alcohol. Even before he took up drinking he worked with booze and I don't think I need to elaborate on smoke. Jazz Club from Maison Margiela seems like a solid match for him, even if it probably comes more naturally than spraying it on. It's a blend of rum, tobacco leaf and some spices that I could see him wearing and at £62 for a 30ml bottle it's one of the more affordable scents in this list. Now I think a better fit, with his humble beginnings and 'District 12 White Liquor', might be Vodka on the Rocks by Kilian. It's fresh with some spices, wood and notably oak moss in the composition. It is also £225 though, so I'll keep to picturing Jazz Club.

The duo appeared increasingly close during the filming and marketing of the movie, and were spotted in April looking close as Sydney joined Glen, 36, in attending his sister, Leslie's wedding rehearsal dinner. In photos shared by gossip site DeuxMoi, Sydney was seen spending time with his family in Texas at the time. The actress was also spotted having brunch with some of Glen's family, while the Top Gun: Maverick star was absent according to a source. The joint appearance came as Sydney's split from her fiancé came to light, leading many to wonder whether the two were connected.
