After excellent 2024 season, how can Packers TE Tucker Kraft improve in 2025?
After a slow start to his rookie season back in 2023, Packers tight end Tucker Kraft has gone from strength to strength, becoming a key cog in Green Bay's offense after just two years in the league.
Here is what the numbers say about Kraft's specific strengths and weaknesses entering Year 3, as well as the areas he can continue to develop:
Strengths
Matt LaFleur and the offensive coaching staff in Green Bay have done a great job of weaponizing Kraft by giving him opportunities to get yards after the catch, and he has excelled in this role with his bruising style, refusing to go down or get out of bounds early.
Among qualified tight ends, Kraft ranks in the 93rd percentile for yards after the catch per reception (YAC/REC) and the 76th percentile for missed tackles forced per reception since entering the league.
Kraft's disregard for his own body with the ball in his hands may give his coaches a heart attack at times, but it is certainly effective.
He has made a habit of creating chunk plays, ranking in the 80th percentile for yards per reception (Y/REC), partially due to his ability to squeeze every yard out of each touch.
With ten touchdowns in the last two seasons, including seven in 2024, Kraft has made some big plays for the Packers down in the red zone, and ranks in the 78th percentile among tight ends for touchdowns per target.
Due to his skill set, Kraft has been used most prominently in the 0-10 yard area of the field, and he has been very valuable there, ranking in the 95th percentile for yards per route run (Y/RR), the 94th for Y/REC and the 96th for YAC/REC.
While his teammate Luke Musgrave is more heralded in terms of athleticism, Kraft is an elite athlete in his own right and has been an effective deep threat when given the opportunity. He lands in the 91st percentile for Y/RR and Y/REC deep downfield.
Weaknesses
For as tough and physical a player as Kraft is, he has not graded out well as a run blocker, at least according to PFF. He falls in just the 27th percentile in run block grade since 2023, although he did improve in 2024.
While Kraft has shown he can threaten defenses deep, the Packers are yet to fully explore his potential in that regard.
He ranks in the 5th percentile among tight ends in average depth of target (ADOT) in his two seasons so far, due to a large portion of his opportunities coming in near the line of scrimmage on quick passes or checkdowns.
It has not done him any harm, as Kraft has made the most of his targets, and the low ADOT is not a knock on Kraft as such, as it is not something he can control, but it will ultimately limit how much he can impact games if he does not become more involved further downfield.
Kraft was not targeted enough in the intermediate part of the field to qualify for the rankings. Speaking to the Green Bay media recently, offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich admitted the Packers coaches are focusing on ways to get him the ball more, and in different ways, in 2025.
For his part, Kraft needs to do a better job when facing man coverage. He has been less effective than against zone, and this is in large part due to him ranking in the 29th percentile for drop rate versus man.
Speaking to the media at mandatory minicamp this week, Kraft acknowledged the areas he needs to continue to develop as a receiver.
He said: 'One thing I feel like I could've done better was separate in man to man. Most of my game was checkdowns underneath and yards after catch ability, so I'm looking to put it all together."
Trending up
Kraft became a more central figure in Green Bay's offense last year, and this was reflected in his targets. He went from the 32nd percentile in targets to the 60th between 2023 and 2024, and based on Stenavich's comments, it seems he will only grow more important.
His increased involvement was justified, as Kraft was simply a more efficient receiving target in 2024, improving his Y/RR ranking from the 32nd to the 68th percentile.
Kraft was better against both man and zone coverage, signifying his overall upward trajectory. He went from the 14th percentile to the 37th percentile in Y/RR against man, and the 11th to the 70th versus zone.
Despite his strengths with the ball in his hands, Kraft was not very productive on targets behind the line of scrimmage as a rookie, ranking in the 25th and 3rd percentile for Y/REC and Y/RR respectively, but was much more effective in 2024, improving to the 61st and 50th percentile.
Between his rookie and sophomore seasons, he went from a below average player at winning contested catches to an above average one, with his ranking improving from the 42nd percentile to the 53rd.
The Packers used Kraft more out of the slot in 2024, after he did not get enough targets to qualify there as a rookie. He performed fairly well from that alignment last year, ranking in the 52nd percentile for Y/RR and the 88th for Y/REC.
It is worth remembering the context that all these strides Kraft made in year two came off the back of an offseason in which he suffered a torn pectoral muscle. It was a truly impressive year.
Trending down
The only aspect in which Kraft arguably declined in Year 2 was his pass blocking, a relatively small part of his overall game. Based on PFF's pass block grades, Kraft regressed from the 71st percentile to the 48th.
On the whole, Kraft made huge strides between Year 1 and 2 and was already one of the better tight ends in the league in 2024.
Just 24 years old entering year three, Kraft's arrow is pointing up, and his self-awareness about areas for improvement should only help him achieve a higher level of performance. Kraft has a legitimate chance to become one of the best all-around players at his position in the future.

Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love reveals what he loves the most about Matthew Golden

Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love reveals what he loves the most about Matthew Golden Jordan Love gives glowing review of Matthew Golden After being selected by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, expectations are high for Matthew Golden. The former Longhorn is expected to be a key piece of the Packers passing attack. So far, he has made a good first impression with his new team. In his only season with Texas, Golden was one of the best wide receivers in the SEC. While catching passes from Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning, he added 987 receiving yards and nine touchdowns to his resume. He also averaged 61.7 yards per game. Due to his speed, Golden was hard to stop and saw his stock rise heading into the draft. During his first few months with the Packers, Golden has shown the traits that made him successful with the Longhorns. They have stood out to his new quarterback, Jordan Love, so far in minicamp as he gets more comfortable with his newest weapon. "He's been looking good," Love said. "I think from the get go, from Day 1 when he got here, he's showcased just the versatility he has running routes, the speed he has, and his ability to catch." At the moment, Golden is focused on learning a new offense before the start of the new season. That is something that rookies are doing league-wide. However, Golden seems more comfortable every day, which Love has noticed. "I think for him, every day he's been getting better just understanding what he needs to do," Love added. "You could tell the first couple days there might be a couple routes here and there where he just might be thinking a little bit too much out there, and not just going out there and playing fast, which is expected for some one who just got here and is learning the whole offense." While the regular season is still months away, Golden's play has stood out ahead of what could be a special rookie season.

Seahawks considering adding a veteran cornerback. Jaire Alexander is available. Hmmm...

A two-time Pro Bowl cornerback just became available. Are the Seahawks good with their depth at cornerback? Are they interested in pursuing, say, Jaire Alexander, that two-time Pro Bowl corner the Green Bay Packers released this week because of a contract impasse? Seattle coach Mike Macdonald didn't exactly say yes to the first question or no to the second. Macdonald was asked this week how he feels about the Seahawks' depth at cornerback. 'Great,' the coach and defensive guru said following the team's final practice of minicamp and the veterans' offseason ended Wednesday. 'Again, these are great battles going into the offseason.' Without being asked specifically about Alexander, who Macdonald and Seahawks general manager (and Green Bay-area native) John Schneider know is now an unsigned free agent, Macdonald also said this about cornerback: 'Now, I mean, are we not going to look to always improve our team in any aspect? No. 'We're always going to be out there and try to be in everything and chasing edges on making us better.' The Seahawks have already hosted free-agent cornerbacks Rasul Douglas and Shaquill Griffin this offseason. Seattle and former coach Pete Carroll drafted Griffin in the third round in 2017. He played his first four seasons with the Seahawks. Now 29, Griffin was a reserve cornerback last season with Minnesota. He reportedly visited Carroll and the Las Vegas Raiders this week. The Packers released Alexander Monday, after he refused their offer of an amended contract. Multiple reports said he didn't want to take a restructured deal with a pay cut and more incentive bonuses. His father came out online and said the Packers wanted Alexander to play in 2025 with almost no guaranteed money. 'He wasn't willing to play for damn near free is a better quote,' Earl Landis Alexander posted on Twitter/X Friday. There's rarely anything that happens around the Packers that Schneider isn't in tune with. The Seahawks' 54-year-old GM was born and raised in De Pere, Wisconsin, five miles from Green Bay's Lambeau Field. His first NFL job was as a Packers scout for then-Green Bay GM Ron Wolf in 1993. He knows Brian Gutekunst, the Packers' current general manager. Schneider is assuredly up to date on Alexander's situation and why Green Bay let him go. Schneider's constant mantra about available free agents is he's always competing and seeking to improve the Seahawks, all year. That includes these six weeks between the end of offseason practices and the start of Seattle's training camp July 23. In OTAs and minicamp, the Seahawks had Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon at right cornerback and Riq Woolen, a Pro Bowl selection as a rookie in 2022, at left cornerback. When Macdonald deployed his nickel defense in offseason practices, Witherspoon went inside as the slot corner and Josh Jobe was the right cornerback. The Seahawks signed Jobe to their practice squad late last August, two days after the Philadelphia Eagles released him. Seattle elevated him to the roster for games multiple times before the Seahawks signed him to their active roster in November. He played 65% of the Seahawks' defensive snaps last season. That showed how much they were in nickel with Witherspoon inside. The third, fourth and fifth cornerbacks are competitions heading into training camp. Veteran free-agent signee Shemar Jean-Charles, 2024 fifth-round pick Nehemiah Pritchett, 2024 free agents Damarion Williams and Tyler Hall are among those behind Witherspoon, Woolen and Jobe on the depth chart. Macdonald praised Hall on the field in minicamp for repeatedly being sound on his formation and play recognition in the coach's changing scheme. Hall, 26, has played in 31 NFL games over four seasons for the Falcons (in 2020) and Raiders ('21, '22 and '23). 'The guys that are with us right now kind of in that three, four, five spot is exciting,' Macdonald said. 'The guys are doing a great job, but go nail it this summer and come back and go compete your butt off.' Alexander is 28 years old. He was a starter for seven years in Green Bay, from his rookie season of 2018. The Packers selected him 18th overall in that year's NFL draft. His issue the last several years has been injuries. He's played in seven, seven and four games in three of the last four seasons, and in just 34 of a possible 68 regular-season games since the start of the 2021 season. He's had shoulder, knee, groin and back injuries. His 2024, and ultimately time with the Packers, ended after seven games because of a torn posterior ligament in his right knee. He tried to play through that before he needed season-ending surgery. Any team considering signing him will need to be convinced by its medical staff Alexander is healthy and recovered from the knee surgery from later last year. NFL reporter Josina Anderson said this week six teams made 'immediate inquiries' about Alexander, presumably to his agent, after the Packers released him.
