Referee Madley says he 'hates' VAR
Referee Bobby Madley has said he "hates" the video assistant referee technology in football because it takes the "emotion away" from the game. Madley officiates matches in the English Football League (EFL) and is a fourth official for Premier League games.The EFL does not use VAR in regular league games, whereas it is employed across matches in England's top flight."As a fan, hate it, hate it. Love the Championship, love League One - I'm still a fan," said Madley, who was speaking at the Cheltenham Science Festival during an event on technology in sport."I love League One because you score a goal, you look at the referee, you look at the assistant, he hasn't put his flag up, it's a goal."It [VAR] takes that emotion away from it and football is a game where there could be one moment in the game, one goal, and that's it."To take that emotion away, to have to wait and wait, and what feels like an eternity, as a fan I'm not a huge fan of that experience."More to follow.

Ex-Man Utd star to reunite with Greenwood after missing out on dream return
Former Manchester United star Angel Gomes will link up with Mason Greenwood after sealing a shock transfer to Marseille. The England midfielder was out of contract this summer. He had been linked with a return to Old Trafford, while Premier League rivals Tottenham and West Ham were also credited with an interest. Despite that, Gomes has chosen to move elsewhere. According to RMC Sport, he is set to move to the French giants, who have offered the midfielder a three-year deal at the Stade Velodrome. Gomes has agreed to the move having been convinced by Roberto De Zerbi's style of play, while the chance to play in the Champions League proved difficult to turn down. Gomes will link up with former United teammate and fellow academy graduate Greenwood with his new employers. The striker moved to France permanently last summer and went on to score 22 goals across his debut campaign. Greenwood has been linked with a move of his own amid reported interest from Barcelona but has expressed his desire to remain with Marseille. Speaking earlier this year, he said: "I hope to be here next year for the Champions League. 'All the other players tell me that the stadium is something special. I think it's been a very positive season, we've reached our objective." Gomes, 24, has been with Lille since leaving Old Trafford in 2021. The four-time England international has gone on to make 134 appearances for the club, scoring on ten occasions. Speaking previously, he admitted that he would potentially be open to a return to United. As quoted by L'Equipe, he said: 'It was a very difficult decision. In my heart, I wanted to leave, in my head, I was thinking of staying. But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career. "I felt that had I stayed, there wouldn't be a lot of opportunities for me. Luis Campos [Lille's then sporting director] and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more, that's what convinced me to move - the faith Lille had in me. "Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it's home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can't predict what will happen in the future."
