Anthony Joshua in discussions over two-fight deal as surprising name emerges
The British star has not fought since losing to Daniel Dubois last September, but is hoping to return to action this year following successful elbow surgery
Anthony Joshua is in talks with Riyadh Season for a potentially lucrative two-fight deal, according to Eddie Hearn, with Jared Anderson possibly being the Brit's future opponent.
Joshua, the former two-time heavyweight world champion, hasn't stepped into the ring since his defeat to Daniel Dubois last summer. It seemed as though an immediate rematch was on the cards, but 'AJ' sustained minor injuries from their initial bout.
As for Joshua's future, the 35-year-old is aiming to return to competitive boxing before the end of the year, following elbow surgery. As for Dubois, 'Triple D' is set to face Oleksandr Usyk at Wembley Stadium on 19 July, with all four world titles on the line in London.
Earlier this week, NoSmoke Sport reported that Joshua was negotiating a three-fight deal with Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh. However, in an interview with BoxingScene, Hearn denied those claims, stating: "Yeah, that's not true, we are actually discussing a two-fight deal with Riyadh Season.
"We've been doing that, [Turki Alalshikh] said that on the night of Canelo [vs. William Scull, May 3], when we had our meeting, and that's the plan really. We want to box sometime this year, October, November, December." As for potential opponents, the boxing promoter added: "We'll see what happens with Dubois-Usyk, we'll see what happens with Fury.
"And if we don't fight those guys, we'll fight, and then maybe we'll follow one of those guys next year." Hearn then sensationally revealed that Dillian Whyte and Jared Anderson are also in contention. "Two guys that have been discussed, but nothing concrete," Hearn said of Whyte and Anderson.
While Whyte's name comes as no surprise, many have been left shock with Anderson's name being in the running. The American was once dubbed the future of the heavyweight division before suffering a shock knockout defeat to Martin Bakole last August.
Joshua has not given up hope of finally realising a bout with Fury. The Brit is not convinced that his rival's retirement is final and appears confident that a fight could still materialise. The British pair agreed a two-bout deal in 2020 but saw plans scuppered when it was ruled Fury had to permit Deontay Wilder a trilogy fight.
In a recent post uploaded to Snapchat, Joshua shared an image of himself watching Fury fight, saying: "One of these days I'll be standing in the opposite corner. Ready and fully charged spiritually." Fury himself has declared that he has nothing left to prove in the sport.
The 'Gypsy King', has dismissed rumours of a return to boxing, questioning the point of a comeback. "I hear a lot of talk about the Gypsy King returning to boxing and I ask this question: for what? What would I return for? More belts? I've won 22 of them," he said. "I've been rumped, that's it, fair play to them, they got their use out of me. But I'm happy, I am happy, content with what I have achieved and accomplished.
"I've been around the world and back again. And this is what retirement looks like for the Gypsy King, not too shabby." He further added, "I'm in no rush at all, to come back to boxing and get my face punched in. For what? What would I return for? I ask that question. I am retired and I am staying retired. I have nothing to prove to anybody and nothing to return for."

Oscar Piastri wins Spanish Grand Prix as Lando Norris slips back in title fight
Norris started second and finished in the same position – despite losing out to Red Bull's Max Verstappen off the line – taking the chequered flag 2.4 seconds behind Piastri. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc completed the podium after he fought his way past Verstappen following a late safety car re-start. However, Verstappen accused Leclerc of driving into him as the two made slight contact on the straight and then fell off the road as he attempted to defend from George Russell. Verstappen was advised to give the position to Russell to avoid a penalty, and while he seemed set to let Russell through, he appeared to drive into the Mercedes. YES TEAM! 💪#McLaren | #M7AReborn | #SpanishGP 🇪🇸 — McLaren (@McLarenF1) June 1, 2025 'What the f***'?' Russell said on the radio, with Verstappen later making way. Russell crossed the line in fourth, with Verstappen fifth. However, Verstappen was hit with a 10-second penalty by the stewards, demoting him to 10th. Lewis Hamilton finished a poor seventh after he was passed by Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg in the closing stages. Piastri's win, which came despite a late safety car, marked his fifth of the nine rounds so far to extend his title advantage over Norris from three points to 10. After failing to land pole position, Norris knew his best chance of beating Piastri would arrive at the long run to the opening corner. However, rather than battle Piastri for top spot, the slow-starting Englishman was left scrambling to keep hold of second with Verstappen drawing alongside in his Red Bull. LAP 62/66 Wow!! 😮 Replays show Leclerc and Verstappen touched on the pit straight at the restart 💥#F1 #SpanishGP — Formula 1 (@F1) June 1, 2025 Norris occupied the centre of the track, but Verstappen, with the advantage of sitting on the racing line, was able to stamp on his brakes later than the British driver to catapult ahead at the first corner. It was the worst possible start for Norris, who had been hoping to build on the momentum of taking just his second triumph of the season in Monaco a week ago. Instead it would be damage limitation, with Verstappen launching an early challenge on Piastri for the lead. It did not last long with Piastri 1.5 seconds clear at the start of lap four. Further back, and Hamilton, who out-qualified Leclerc for the first time since the Chinese Grand Prix in April, was up one place to fourth after he moved round the outside of Russell at the start. But the seven-time world champion was soon struggling for speed, and, for the second time in his short Ferrari career, was asked to move aside for Leclerc. Drama in the closing stages of the race! 😱 Max Verstappen drops to P10 following a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with George Russell #F1 #SpanishGP — Formula 1 (@F1) June 1, 2025 Hamilton duly obliged on lap 10 and by the start of the next lap had already fallen more than a second behind his team-mate. Norris, in his superior McLaren, made light work of Verstappen at the start of lap 13 to take second place, but by now Piastri was already 4.2 seconds up the road. In came Norris on lap 21 for a change of tyres with Piastri in on the following lap. That promoted Verstappen into the lead before the four-time world champion pulled in for his second change of tyres on lap 29. Hamilton's sub-par race then suffered another setback in the pits when he lost time with a sticky front-right tyre. Piastri looked on course to cruise to victory only for Kimi Antonell's engine to expire on lap 55 of 66, and, with the Italian rookie stranded in the gravel at Turn 10, out came the safety car. A six-lap shootout followed but, despite the chaos behind, it was Piastri who held his nerve to keep Norris at bay and land another dent to the Briton's title tilt. Piastri said: 'It was a great weekend overall. The pace was good and we could turn it on when we needed to. 'Good to bounce back from Monaco. It has been a great year and this weekend has been the one I have been after. The team gave me a great car and winning races is a lot of fun.' Norris said: 'Oscar drove a very good race. I didn't have the pace to match him but I gave it my best shot.' Leclerc added: 'Max wanted to bring me to the inside, so I was pushing him to the left. There was a bit of contact but for me no damage so there were no consequences.'

The chaos began after the restart from the safety car which was prompted by Kimi Anontelli veering into the gravel. Verstappen nearly spun and Charles Leclerc overtook and then Russell nearly went into the back of the Dutchman who had to veer off track onto the escape road and was told by his team to give the place back to the Brit. The Mercedes man thought he was doing so but the Dutchman appeared to intentionally ram into the side of him. The time penalty for Verstappen meant Leclerc finished third ahead of fourth-place Russell, but it was misery for Lewis Hamilton who was overtaken by Nico Hulkenburg for fifth. At the start, Australian driver Piastri got off perfectly while Verstappen picked out Norris for second. Russell produced a horrific start which left him for dust by both Ferraris as Hamilton went into fourth and Lecerc into fifth. One of F1's most recognisable voices reveals Leclerc and Hamilton moments that will live with him forever Ferrari's swap conundrum was back again on lap 9 with Leclerc right up Hamilton's jacksie as the seven-time world champion struggled with his grip on the car. He was finally told 'swap positions with Leclerc' and he waved his teammate past. Norris was all over Verstappen and the McLaren one-two was restored on lap 13 as the Brit eased past the Red Bull driver who didn't even bother to defend. Now the race was on between Norris and Piastri as they went toe-to-toe on lap times. Verstappen took the lead in his Red Bull on lap 23 after the two McLaren's had pitted after his own stop. But the Dutchman was struggling and pitted again on lap 30 and the two Papaya cars shimmied into the lead. Just over half-way and Norris was closing in on Piastri with blistering lap times and was the quickest driver on the track. Red Bull were still in the mix though and Christian Horner came on the blower to Verstappen to say: 'McLaren are receiving the threat. They realise they have to push on. It's a long way to go from there.' Piastri played Norris like a fiddle though, allowing him to get close before charging clear of his teammate with the gap over five seconds with 20 laps to go. Norris and Verstappen got caught up in a fierce battle between Ollie Bearman and Liam Lawson. The four-time world champion slammed the 'f****** idiots!" on his team radio as he angrily waved at Bearman when he passed him. Drama erupted when the safety car came out after Anontelli's Mercedes veered into the gravel while England and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham watched on from the garage. There was chaos on the restart for Verstappen which took the attention away from Piastri eventually soaring over the line with another perfect performance. The dramatic events saw Piastri move ten points ahead of Norris at the top of the World Drivers Championship, with Verstappen tumbling 49 points behind the leader. 6 Kimi Antonelli's caused the late safety car to spark the chaos Credit: Getty
