The adopted son of renowned Sindhi poet Dr Akash Ansari has confessed to his murder, police said on Monday.
Latif Akash, the poet's foster son, killed Dr Akash with a sharp-edged weapon before setting his room on fire, officials revealed.
Police confirmed that Latif, who struggled with drug addiction, often demanded money from his adopted father.
Investigators said Latif underwent DNA testing, and authorities are awaiting forensic and post-mortem reports.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Farrukh Lanjar said the murder was a deliberate act, not an accident, adding that all relevant evidence has been gathered.
Dr. Akash Ansari, a prominent revolutionary poet, writer, and intellectual from Sindh, tragically lost his life in a fire that broke out in the Citizen Colony area of Qasimabad, Hyderabad.
However, the circumstances surrounding his death have raised suspicions, and authorities have launched an investigation.
Reports indicated that Dr. Ansari's adopted son was slightly injured in the incident. The fire began in a room where Dr. Ansari was sleeping, and initial assessments suggest it may have been caused by a short circuit, despite a heater being in use in the room.
Rescue sources confirmed that Dr. Ansari, aged 70, was found dead at the scene. His son, Latif Ansari, was transferred to the Burns Ward of Civil Hospital for treatment. Local police confirmed that after extinguishing the fire, they transported the body to the hospital for further examination.
Family sources revealed that Dr. Akash Ansari's funeral was initially planned to take place in his hometown of Badin.
However, following suspicions surrounding his death, police intervened, recalling the family back to Hyderabad. The body was returned to Civil Hospital for a post-mortem.
Close friends of Dr. Ansari have expressed concerns that his death may not have been accidental. Police have indicated that the initial post-mortem findings suggest signs of foul play.
Dr. Abdul Hamid Mughal, who conducted the autopsy, reported that there were deep wounds on Dr. Ansari's body, consistent with injuries from a sharp object.

Sindh Sabha barred from holding conference
Sindhi nationalist organisation — Sindh Sabha — was unable to hold a roundtable conference after deployment of a heavy contingent of police and closure of roads leading to the Hyderabad Press Club. The police took several people into custody, while several leaders of Sindh Sabha were trapped in the conference hall due to the police presence. According to Sindh Sabha, a group of lawyers reached there and escorted the Sindh Sabha leaders out of the premises. Sindh Sabha is known for its active struggle against the disappearance of Sindhi nationalist workers. It had called a roundtable conference under the title 'Let's Join Hands to Take Steps for the Survival of Our Natural Homeland Sindh'. Various nationalist parties had been invited to participate in the conference. Sindh Sabha claimed that the police arrested their leaders including Shabbir Sindhi, Raja Chandio, Waheed Mustafa, and several workers from outside the club. Police sources, however, said that only two workers of Sindh Sabha were in custody for their involvement in raising anti-Pakistan and anti-army slogans on Sunday. Sources said that the conference was also prevented due to the planned Sindh March by the newly formed nationalist party, Sindh National Congress, notorious for raising anti-Pakistan and anti-army slogans, and tearing banners related to Operation Banyanum Marsoos. Following the incident, the police registered a case against eight named and 250 unknown individuals, including men and women.

Writer claims cops broke into house, took sons away
Notable Sindhi writer and former Secretary of the Sindhi Language Authority, Taj Joyo, blamed police for breaking into his residence and whisking away two of his sons. In a bare-bodied video recording, Joyo alleged that around 100 cops broke the gate of his house in the Gulistan-e-Sajjad area in the wee hours of Monday, taking away his sons. Hoshu Joyo and Ruplo Joyo were produced before the Anti Terrorism Court, which sent them to jail on judicial remand. They are among 250 men and 40 women who were booked in an FIR at Cantt police station, on Sunday night, for raising anti-Pakistan and anti-army slogans during a rally. The FIR was lodged on the state's complaint under sections 123/A, 341, 147,149, Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and 6/7 Anti Terrorism Act, with the complainant claiming that the accused individuals gathered near the press club on Sunday, and chanted provocative slogans. One of the accused alleged that the participants of the march were booked because they protested against the proposed six canals and corporate farming.
