France ‘Determined' to Recognize Palestinian State, PM Says

Leaders20-05-2025

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Tuesday that France was 'determined' to recognize a Palestinian State, according to France 24.
Barrot also condemned Israel's 'indefensible' situation in Gaza caused by its heavy airstrikes and blockade of humanitarian aid.
Recognizing Palestinian State
'We cannot leave the children of Gaza a legacy of violence and hatred. So, all this must stop, and that's why we are determined to recognize a Palestinian state,' Barrot told France Inter radio.
In this regard, he also emphasized that Paris supported a Netherlands-led initiative for a review of the cooperation agreement between the European Union and Israel.
'And I am actively working towards this, because we want to contribute to a political solution in the interest of the Palestinians but also for the security of Israel,' he added.
Joint Statement
Barrot's statement came after French President Emmanuel Macron joined British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in a rare joint statement that made Israel very angry.
The participating states said that they would not stand by, 'further concrete actions' if Israel continued to block aid. Furthermore, they stressed their commitment to recognizing a Palestinian state.
Macron Accuses Israel of Shameful Actions
Macron also accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government of committing 'shameful and disgraceful,' actions in Gaza.
In a special television appearance broadcast on the TF1 channel, Macron noted that it is not for Netanyahu to decide whether this constitutes genocide, but rather for historians.
'What Benjamin Netanyahu's government is doing today in Gaza is unacceptable. It is shameful and disgraceful,' Macron said.
During the interview, Macron stated that he was 'one of the few leaders who visited the Egypt-Gaza border.'
He also described the situation as 'one of the most distressing sights I've ever witnessed.'
Condemning Blockade of Humanitarian Aid
Macron criticized Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid causing the suffering of thousands in Gaza.
'There is no water, no medicine, the wounded cannot get out, the doctors cannot get in,' Macron added.
'We need the United States. President [Donald] Trump has the levers. I have had tough words with Prime Minister Netanyahu. I got angry, but they [Israel] don't depend on us, they depend on American weapons,' he added.
Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed at least 53,500 Palestinians and wounded more than 118,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

NATO to strengthen its deterrence with new ambitious targets, Rutte says

NATO allies will enhance their deterrence and defense capabilities by setting new, ambitious targets, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said on Wednesday ahead of a meeting with defense ministers in Brussels, held a few weeks before the NATO summit in the Netherlands. 'These targets set out what forces and concrete capabilities every ally needs to provide to strengthen our deterrence and defense. Air and missile defense, long-range weapons, logistics, and large land maneuver formations are among our top priorities,' he said. NATO's current defense spending target is 2 percent of GDP - a goal currently met or exceeded by 22 of its 32 members. But many NATO leaders say that target is now too low, as they see Russia as a much greater threat following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

US-Backed Gaza Aid Centers Close Temporarily After Deadly Shooting

Aid centers in hunger-stricken Gaza will temporarily close on Wednesday, according to a controversial US-backed agency. The Israeli army warned that roads leading to distribution stations 'are considered combat zones.' This announcement follows a tragic incident where twenty-seven people died in southern Gaza on Tuesday. Israeli troops opened fire near one of the centers operated by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Israel recently eased its blockade of the Palestinian enclave. However, the United Nations has stated that the entire population remains at risk of famine. The UN Security Council will vote on a resolution calling for a ceasefire and humanitarian access to Gaza. This measure is expected to face a veto from the United States. The GHF announced that its 'distribution centers will be closed for renovation, reorganisation, and efficiency improvement work' on Wednesday. They plan to resume operations on Thursday. The Israeli army confirmed the temporary closure and warned against travelling on roads leading to the distribution centers. Controversy Surrounding GHF Operations The GHF, which began operations a week ago, has faced criticism from the UN and major aid groups. They have refused to cooperate with the GHF due to concerns that it serves Israeli military objectives. Following Tuesday's deadly incident, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the killing of Palestinians seeking food aid as 'unacceptable.' Israeli authorities and the GHF, which employs contracted US security, denied allegations that the Israeli army shot at civilians, stating that the incident is under investigation. The Israeli military insists that its forces do not prevent Gazans from collecting aid. Army spokesperson Effie Defrin stated that soldiers fired at suspects who 'were approaching in a way that endangered' the troops. He confirmed that the 'incident is being investigated.' International Response to Civilian Casualties UN human rights chief Volker Turk condemned such attacks against civilians as 'unconscionable.' He stated that they 'constitute a grave breach of international law and a war crime.' The International Committee of the Red Cross reported that Gazans face an 'unprecedented scale and frequency of recent mass casualty incidents.' The United States acknowledged that a US-backed relief effort in Gaza has succeeded in distributing meals. However, they also recognized the need for improvement following reports of shootings near the GHF center. Meanwhile, a boat organized by an international activist coalition is sailing toward Gaza to deliver aid. Israel has intensified its offensive, claiming it aims to defeat the Palestinian group Hamas, with health ministry in Gaza reported that at least 4,240 people have died since Israel resumed its offensive on 18 March, bringing the war's overall toll to 54,510, mostly civilians. Israeli Military Strikes Syria in Response to Fired Projectiles

The Israeli military said it launched strikes on targets in Syria on Tuesday, responding to projectile launched from Syrian territory, with Defense Minister Israel Katz explicitly holding Syria's leader directly responsible for these provocative actions. However, Syria's foreign affairs ministry vehemently denied any involvement in the projectile launches, asserting that Syria has never posed and will never pose a threat to regional stability. Israeli media reported that these strikes marked the first instance of projectiles fired from Syria into Israeli territory since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December, with no reports of casualties or damage on the Israeli side. The projectiles triggered air raid sirens in parts of the southern Golan Heights, a region Israel captured from Syria in 1967 and annexed in 1981. Statements from Key Figures Israeli defence minister, Israel Katz, issued a statement through his office, emphasizing that they view the Syrian president as directly responsible for any threats or attacks directed at Israel. Syria's interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the Islamist group that overthrew Assad, now faces the consequences of these actions. The Israeli military confirmed that two projectiles crossed from Syria into Israeli territory, landing in open areas. In response, Israeli artillery struck targets in southern Syria. Syria's official news agency, SANA, reported shelling targeting the Yarmuk Basin in the west of Daraa province. The Britain-based war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, noted that the bombardments hit farmland without reporting any casualties. Regional Impact and International Reactions Violent explosions shook southern Syria, particularly the town of Quneitra and the Daraa region, following Israeli aerial strikes overnight. Syria condemned the Israeli shelling as a blatant violation of its sovereignty, which further aggravates regional tensions. The foreign ministry reiterated that Syria has never been a threat to anyone in the region. The ministry denied responsibility for the strikes but acknowledged that numerous parties are attempting to destabilize the region for their own interests. They emphasized the priority of extending state authority in southern Syria and ending the presence of unauthorized weapons. Following Assad's overthrow, Israel moved its forces into the UN-patrolled demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights and has conducted hundreds of strikes against military targets in Syria. Ongoing Military Operations Israel asserts that these strikes aim to prevent advanced weapons from reaching Syria's new authorities, whom they consider jihadists. The Israeli military stated that its troops continue defensive operations in southern Syria to dismantle terrorist infrastructure and protect residents of the Golan Heights. Syria and Israel have technically been at war since 1948. US President Donald Trump announced the lifting of sanctions on Syria last month and expressed hope for normalized relations with Israel. However, experts believe that this prospect remains far from reality since the situation continues to evolve, with both nations on high alert and international observers closely monitoring the developments. The recent exchange of fire between Israel and Syria underscores the volatile nature of their relationship. As both countries navigate this complex geopolitical landscape, the international community watches with bated breath, hoping for a de-escalation of tensions and a path towards lasting peace in the region.
