Tributes laid at site of Sweden school shooting as death toll rises to 11

Euronews05-02-2025

Tributes were laid early Wednesday at the site of Sweden's worst ever mass shooting, which left at least 11 people dead, including the gunman, and at least five seriously wounded at an adult education centre west of Stockholm.
Officials warned that the death toll could rise.
Candles were lit and flowers laid in memory of the victims across the road from the school, as police helicopters circled above the heavily policed scene.
A witness to the shooting said he and his fellow students barricaded themselves for over two hours in a classroom with his teacher and colleagues as the shooter targeted victims outside.
Student Andreas Sundling said his class had just started when they heard a commotion outside.
"At first we thought the people were fighting outside and maybe, I don't know, throwing chairs and tables," he told Sky News in an interview.
"Then we heard people screaming. And then the people in my class, they realised that something is wrong here and we came to the conclusion that it's a shooting."
Sundling said the group blocked the door with tables and chairs then waited for more than two hours before police came and knocked down the door.
"When they took us out from the classroom and when I passed the entrance to the school, I looked down and there was blood everywhere," he recounted.
Gunman likely acted alone
The gunman's motive hadn't been determined by early Wednesday as the Scandinavian nation — where gun violence at schools is very rare — reeled from the attack.
The school, called Campus Risbergska, offers primary and secondary educational classes for adults age 20 and older, Swedish-language classes for immigrants, vocational training and programmes for people with intellectual disabilities.
It is on the outskirts of Örebro, which is about 200 kilometres west of Stockholm.
King Carl XVI Gustaf and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the Royal Palace and government buildings.
Roberto Eid Forest, head of the local police, told reporters that the suspected gunman was among the dead.
There were no warnings beforehand, and police believe the perpetrator acted alone.
Police haven't said if the man was a student at the school.
Though they haven't published a possible motive, authorities said there were no suspected connections to terrorism at this point.

Footage of people escaping burning building falsely linked to India plane crash

"A video of a man jumping from a plane during yesterday's plane crash has surfaced. Watch this video carefully, you will get goosebumps. Another video of the Ahmedabad plane crash is going viral rapidly," reads a Hindi-language Facebook post on June 13, 2025. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London with 242 people crashed between a hospital and a neighbourhood in Ghoda Camp, a residential area in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025 (archived link). The crash has killed at least 265 people, including 24 on the ground, with the possibility of a higher toll as more remains are found. One man aboard the Air India flight -- carrying 242 passengers and crew -- miraculously survived the fiery crash, which left the tailpiece of the aircraft jutting out of the second floor of a hostel for medical staff from a nearby hospital (archived link). Image Screenshot of the false post, taken on June 13, 2025 The video was shared alongside similar claims on Facebook, X, Instagram and Threads. However, the video is unrelated to the Ahmedabad plane crash. A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the false video found similar footage published on X by the Indian news website Hindustan Times on June 10, (archived link). The caption of the post said, "A major fire broke out on the top floor of the Shabad Apartment complex in Dwarka Sector 13, triggering panic among residents." Another report from the outlet said the fire killed a man and his two children (archived link). Image Screenshot comparison of the falsely shared video (L) and the X video published by Hindustan Times English-language daily The Statesman also published a video of the incident on X from a different angle, and went on to say the fire broke out in a residential building named Shabad Apartment (archived link). Gaza aid boat: NGO says Israel is deporting six activists

An Israeli NGO representing activists detained aboard a boat attempting to breach Israel's blockade of Gaza said, on Thursday, June 12, that six were being deported, including two who were already on planes. "After more than 72 hours in Israeli custody following the unlawful interception of the Madleen Freedom Flotilla in international waters (...) six volunteers are now being transferred to Ben Gurion Airport for deportation," the Adalah rights group said in a statement. It added that the six activists – two French citizens and nationals of Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey – were expected to be deported on Thursday or early Friday. Rima Hassan, a French MEP for the La France Insoumise (LFI, radical left) party, who is also of Palestinian descent, is among the six activists due to be expelled imminently. Adalah later told Agence-France Presse (AFP) that two activists, one from Turkey and one from Germany, had already "both been deported and [are] on planes." Greta Thunberg among the first deported activists In total, 12 people were on board the Madleen sailing boat when it was intercepted by Israeli forces in the eastern Mediterranean, about 185 kilometers west of Gaza on Monday. Four of them, including two French citizens and Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, agreed to be deported immediately. Another two French nationals remain in Israeli custody, awaiting their deportation on Friday, Adalah said. "While in custody, volunteers were subjected to mistreatment, punitive measures and aggressive treatment, and two volunteers were held for some period of time in solitary confinement," it added. All 12 people on board the Madleen have been banned from Israel for 100 years.

AI-generated video of overflowing river falsely linked to Myanmar floods

"Myawaddy Road, Karen State. Several vehicles were damaged due to the landslide. June 1, 2025, 4:30 pm," reads a Burmese-language Facebook post on June 1, 2025. The video -- which has racked up more than 3.3 million views -- shows a river raging through a mountain pass highway with vehicles and people stranded along the muddied banks. The Myawaddy Road is a major trade route connecting Myanmar to neighbouring Thailand, which has often been closed off in the ongoing civil war -- sparked by a military coup that deposed Myanmar's civilian leadership in 2021 (archived links here and here). Image Screenshot of a false Facebook post taken on June 9, 2025 The video circulated after local media reported flooding in northern Myanmar along the Irrawaddy river basin following persistent heavy rainfall in early June (archived link). It also surfaced elsewhere on Facebook in Burmese posts as well as on TikTok. However, the video was fabricated using AI. A reverse image search on Google found an identical TikTok video published on May 28, 2025 with an "AI-generated" label (archived link). Checks of the same TikTok account showed it has repeatedly shared AI-generated videos of natural disasters (archived links here and here). Image Screenshot comparison of the false Facebook post (L) and the original TikTok video Joao Tourinho, who runs the TikTok account that posted the video, told AFP on June 10 that he created the video using the Hailuo AI tool, a text-to-video generation software. "I regret that people use content that is declared to be created by AI to spread false information," he said. "My YouTube channel and TikTok profile show that all of my creations are for those who enjoy apocalyptic entertainment created by AI." A close inspection of the clip also shows visual inconsistencies typical of AI-generated videos, such as oddly-shaped vehicles, cars merging into one another and a damaged white car suddenly appearing in the scene. Image Visual inconsistencies highlighted by AFP Although generative AI technology is improving rapidly, visual inconsistencies persist and are the best way to identify fabricated content. Other AFP debunks of AI-generated imagery can be found here.
