The newest chapter in the Karate Kid franchise, Karate Kid: Legends, has officially landed in theaters on Friday, May 30, and fans are already loving it. Directed by Jonathan Entwistle, the action drama sees the legendary Jackie Chan return as Mr Han after 15 years. Ben Wang and Ralph Macchio also feature in the movie.
With such a big legacy to follow, expectations were sky-high. So, did it deliver? According to fans, absolutely yes. People are calling it fun and a worthy addition to the Karate Kid world. Many were excited to see Jackie Chan reprise his role as Mr Han.
As a big fan of this franchise, I really enjoyed #KarateKidLegends even with it's flaws. Ben Wang is going to be a HUGE star in the next 5 years as he is fantastic and has so much charisma! This needed to be 120 minutes instead of 90 as it moves way to fast. Still had fun though! pic.twitter.com/zadr68C3if — Josh Titan (@joshbecker659) May 28, 2025
Another added, '#KarateKidLegends is a good time. As a fan of the original and Cobra Kai, this film was simply fun easy watching. I really like the setting and stylistic choices. Ben Wang is brilliant. The legends are good fun as well, still enjoy seeing LaRusso. Fight scenes go hard. Solid fun," they added.

One account called it 'one of the best Karate Kid films by a landslide." 'Brilliant story and character moments. This is made with love. It setups up for BIG things to come in the most exciting way I seen since 2010. Bring your tissues but not because it's a sad movie," they added.

Another fan loved the action-packed feel, writing, '#KarateKidLegends is a fun & action-packed addition to the Karate Kid universe. Ben Wang is very likable as Li Fong & he's got an interesting backstory. For those worried about whether this would erase what happened in Cobra Kai, it doesn't. Also, a nice surprise ending!"

For one individual, the film was 'predictable and very fast." But even with those issues, they still had a great time and shared, 'It's got a lot of heart. Bringing in fantastic new & legacy characters, it's a nice entry to the KK legacy. Ben Wang is great as lead Li Fong. Loved seeing Macchio & Chan together."

Another review read, '#KarateKidLegends is an innocent & at times wholesome entry in the franchise. Ben Wang is a great likeable lead. Jackie Chan is always a fun treat. Ralph Macchio is sadly underused & the story is very predictable. Honestly die-hard fans will be lukewarm on it, the rest will love it."

A person wrote, '#KarateKidLegends kicks a**! My biggest takeaway is the US has been severely deprived of Jackie Chan. Anyway, Ben Wang and Aramis Knight are bonafide action stars. There is some cheesiness, but it's hella fun, unites the franchises, and hyped me up for whatever comes next."

Karate Kid: Legends follows Li Fong (Ben Wang), a skilled young kung fu fighter who moves to New York City. What starts off as a simple new beginning becomes something much bigger when he gets the attention of a local karate champion. With guidance from the legendary Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) and the iconic Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), Li steps into the dojo to prove that he has got the spirit of a true martial artist.

Not a Cobra Kai sequel, but Karate Kid: Legends is definitely in the same universe

The beloved 'Karate Kid' universe is expanding with 'Karate Kid: Legends', released recently on 30 May, 2025. The highly anticipated movie brought together two iconic figures for the first time: Ralph Macchio 's Daniel LaRusso, from the original 1984 classic and the recent hit series 'Cobra Kai', and Jackie Chan 's Mr. Han, the kung fu master from the 2010 reboot. A shared universe, not a direct sequel| While fans might expect a continuation of Netflix's 'Cobra Kai', which concluded its six-season run in February 2025, director Jonathan Entwistle has clarified that 'Karate Kid: Legends' is not a direct sequel. Instead, it exists within the same expansive universe, offering a new chapter rather than a direct follow-up. Macchio expressed his enthusiasm for connecting Daniel and Mr. Han, both of whom trained under the mentorship philosophies of Mr. Miyagi, calling it "another ecosystem in the grand universe" of 'The Karate Kid'. New hero, surprise return Set three years after the events of 'Cobra Kai', the film introduces a fresh protagonist: Li Fong, played by American Born Chinese star Ben Wang. Karate Kid Legends Day 2 India Box Office: Jackie Chan-Ralph Macchio's martial arts drama sees healthy Saturday rise, nets Rs 1.30 crore

Karate Kid: Legends, the sixth installment in the long-running martial arts franchise, demonstrated some momentum at the Indian box office on day 2, today, collecting Rs 1.30 crore net. This marks a healthy 75 percent jump from its opening day figure of Rs 75 lakh, bringing the two-day total to Rs 2.05 crore net. Though the performance is not poor by any means, the film could have fared better given the strength of the brand and the presence of global icons like Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio. The film has generated curiosity among long-time fans of both the original franchise and the Cobra Kai series. However, the Indian market has been busy with alternative Hollywood offerings like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Final Destination: Bloodlines. Perhaps, the martial arts genre endeavor should have marketed itself better in the region, especially in metro cities where financially secure audiences often explore diverse theatrical options. Directed by Jonathan Entwistle, Karate Kid: Legends serves as a direct continuation of both the 2010 Karate Kid reboot and the Cobra Kai series. Alongside franchise veterans Chan and Macchio, the film introduces Ben Wang in the lead role, supported by Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, and Ming-Na Wen. The film is also the first in the franchise not produced by Jerry Weintraub, who passed away in 2015. Development on the project began in September 2022, with Entwistle coming on board to direct the Rob Lieber script and screenplay. The casting process ran from late 2023 to early 2024, with principal photography wrapping up by June 2024. The film had its world premiere in Mexico City at Cinépolis Mitikah on May 7, before releasing worldwide on May 30. While early reviews have been mixed, the nostalgia factor and multigenerational appeal are expected to work in the film's favour in the long run. Whether Karate Kid: Legends can press the accelerator soon remains to be seen, both in India and elsewhere. As of now, the film's performance is modest, with room to grow depending on word of mouth and family audience support amid Lilo & Stitch.

Karate Kid: Legends Not a Cobra Kai Sequel But It's Still Connected: Know How

Karate Kid: Legends, the newest addition to the beloved Karate Kid universe, is set to hit theaters in 2025, bringing together Ralph Macchio's Daniel LaRusso and Jackie Chan's Mr. Han for the first time. The film continues the story of Daniel, who first appeared in the 1984 classic The Karate Kid and re-emerged in Netflix's hit series Cobra Kai, which wrapped up its six-season run in February 2025. Now, Daniel finds himself crossing paths with Mr. Han, the kung-fu master from the 2010 reboot starring Jaden Smith. 'This franchise doesn't know how to not do it right when we care,' Macchio told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that connecting Daniel and Mr. Han, both students of Mr. Miyagi, brings 'another ecosystem in the grand universe' of The Karate Kid. Karate Kid: Legends is not a Cobra Kai sequel, but it's still connected. Director Jonathan Entwistle clarified that Karate Kid: Legends isn't a direct sequel to Cobra Kai, but it exists in the same universe. 'This is not a Cobra Kai movie. It's another chapter in the story,' he explained to Collider. Set three years after the events of Cobra Kai, the movie introduces a new hero: Li Fong, played by American Born Chinese star Ben Wang. Li is a martial arts student from Beijing who learns kung-fu from Mr. Han and karate from Daniel after moving to New York City. While the focus is on Li's journey, fans will be thrilled to see a familiar face. William Zabka returns as Johnny Lawrence in a surprise cameo near the end of the film. Director Entwistle revealed that Zabka's role was a 'very hard' secret to keep. Macchio also praised Zabka's inclusion, stating, 'He graces Cobra Kai with a brilliant performance, and he graces us here with a tip of the hat to the legendary Johnny Lawrence.'
