LONDON (AP) — Chelsea forward Lauren James was picked in England's 23-woman squad for its title defense in the Women's European Championship on Thursday despite having not played a game for club or country since early April because of injury.
James injured a hamstring against Belgium on April 4 and was the biggest doubt ahead of England coach Sarina Wiegman's squad selection.
However, she was included among the attacking options, which also featured Michelle Agyemang, a highly rated 19-year-old forward who has played once for England.
Wiegman will be without 218 caps worth of experience in the wake of Millie Bright's decision to pull out of selection because of health reasons and following the international retirements of Mary Earps and Fran Kirby over the past week.
England's first game at the Euros, taking place in Switzerland, is against France on July 5.

Kyle Teel gets a new shirt as he joins the Chicago White Sox for big league debut
CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Teel has a new collared shirt and his own big league opportunity. Teel, one of baseball's top prospects, was brought up by the Chicago White Sox on Friday. The 23-year-old catcher singled, walked twice and scored in a 7-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals in his major league debut. Advertisement Teel was acquired in the Garrett Crochet trade with the Boston Red Sox in December. He batted .295 with eight homers and 30 RBIs in 50 games with Triple-A Charlotte. When Chase Meidroth, another prospect who was acquired by the White Sox in the Crochet deal, was brought up in April, Meirdroth told Teel he might need a collared shirt for his major league arrival, and Teel gave the infielder one of his own. So Charlotte manager Sergio Santos returned the favor when he broke the news to Teel that he was going to Chicago, handing over a new shirt. Teel was the No. 14 pick in the 2023 amateur draft out of the University of Virginia. His arrival marks a positive moment for a last-place White Sox team in the middle of a painful rebuilding process. Advertisement Teel walked in his first plate appearance in the second. He was caught stealing home for the final out of the inning. He lined a single into left field in the fourth for his first big league hit. He also walked and scored on a wild pitch in Chicago's five-run eighth inning. The White Sox also optioned catcher Korey Lee to Charlotte before their series opener against the Royals, and right-hander Ryan Cusick was designated for assignment. The 26-year-old Lee was sidelined by a sprained left ankle before he was activated by the White Sox on May 27. He is batting .250 (7 for 28) in 14 games with Chicago this season. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press

D-backs catcher Gabriel Moreno leaves game in the 6th
CINCINNATI (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno left Friday night's game against the Cincinnati Reds after being struck on his right hand by a wild pitch from right-handed reliever Cristian Mena. With the Diamondbacks leading 3-2 in the sixth, Mena's pitch bounced in front of home plate and hit Moreno on his throwing hand. After consulting with the training staff, Moreno made a few throws but couldn't continue. Manager Torey Lovullo said X-rays were negative. 'Taking him out of the game was precautionary, the trainer recommended it after watching him throw the ball' Lovullo said. 'There's substantial swelling in that area. We'll see how he wakes up and feels tomorrow.' Jose Herrera replaced Moreno behind the plate. Moreno was 0 for 2 and looking to extend his seven-game hitting streak. He was batting .281 with four homers and 17 RBIs in 49 games.

Yankees' Anthony Volpe stiff and sore when hit on elbow by pitch but scans negative for break
Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe left Friday night's game against the Boston Red Sox in the fourth inning with a bruised left elbow, two innings after he was hit by an 88.2 mph Walker Buehler pitch. New York manager Aaron Boone said X-rays and a CT scan were negative. 'A little stiff and sore, but hopefully nothing that keeps him out very long,' Boone said. Volpe winced in pain but remained in the game after he was hit by the pitch, which forced in a run. The 24-year-old Gold Glove winner played the field in the third inning, then was replaced by Oswald Peraza at the start of the fourth. Volpe hit a two-run homer in a five-run first inning. He is batting .241 with eight homers and 37 RBIs. New York went on to a 9-6 victory over Boston. ___ AP MLB: recommended
